Revisiting the Trade Deadline

I honestly think Amezaga has shown enough to be our regular CF. The dude may not hit many home runs but he's the definition of the word clutch.

Most be my bad memory, but do you have any examples of his clutch play besides throwing out a man at 3b? I think he has been a fine player for us, but I wouldnt think of him as clutch.

I don't see Loria adding payroll under any circumstance. I see the Marlins maybe making a trade for a young CF, but to get a Carl Crawford it would cost more than a Dontrelle Willis.......so is it really worth it in the long run?

 Willis>Crawford

He is 3 for 22 in close and late situations.

:lol I just got owned, nevermind. But it just seems like he's always had a big hit when we've needed it. Put it this way, he's been consistent, he's never been in a slump when he's had a chance to hit. Perhaps clutch was a bad word.

There is no long run involved if they get an expiring/arbitration contract.

That's the point.

Loria has a pretty steady history of hiring expensive players for one year.

I don't think you guys would like the D-Rays' asking price for Crawford, considering they wanted Olsen for Gathright.

And I doubt you have the faintest idea what they'd ask for.

There is btw, absolutely no need to trade Willis to get Crawford. Zero, zilch, nada.

I suspect how we perform over the next nine games will determine whether Jeffrey Loria lets his passion for the game override common sense and they go shopping for a power centerfielder.

If the Marlins were to win seven of the next nine games (something almost impossible to envision) and drew within two games of .500 and probably no more than two or three out of the wildcard, I'm guessing his desire to win will outweigh everything and Admin Beinfest will be instructed to go get someone who can instill enough fear in opposing pitchers that they have to pitch MIguel.

That is after all the missing piece to this team, providing protection for Cabrera. There's still time for him to hit 30 home runs+ this season if pitchers have to pitch to him, and there's no time like the second half to do it.

Of course this post will bring out all the Loria-haters but so be it. I've watched him cheering on his team and agonizing over their failures, especially last season, and I'm convinced he is above all a true win-at-all-cost fan of the game.

how much would the nats ask for Soriano you think?

Perhaps a Pettit + Mitre? They want pitching and all, a top 50 pitching prospect and a solid young pitcher

You can't go from now through September and expect to be there at the end unless you start scoring alot more runs.

This team has survived, in fact flourished because of it's pitching, but down the stretch you need runs and lots of them.

Thats not true at all. Pitching + Defense = Championship, the '05 white sox are the standard for that, 11-1 in the post-season 17 for their last 18.

The Marlins have the pitching, the only question is can they work up to 160-180 innings, I believe Nolasco is the only one ever to pitch 160 in his pro career, that means Johnson & Olsen become suspect. Willis last year pitched 236IP. I believe Moehler and Borowski will be traded to net the marlins their future CF (hopefully Chris Denorfia) and then bring up Anibal Sanchez.

I don't think Torii Hunter is what the Marlins need, hes mediocre at the plate, and he would cost far to much in terms of prospect and payroll even if he is a FA after this season, lastly the Twins have gone on a hot streak lately.

The same White Sox who led the league in homeruns?... or something close to it?

Johnson and Nolasco will have no problems throwing that many. Olsen may wear down around 130-150 because of his minor league progression and injuries. Anibal should be ok as long as the pitch counts aren't outrageous, and Girardi has been pretty good with them all year besides some Willis starts.

I find it amusing people on this board continually think BRIAN MOEHLER is some sort of trade bait to net a young CF with fine starting potential. Brian Moehler is Brian Moehler. He is not getting you anything. Reds fans would laugh in your face if you offered them Borowski and Moehler for Denorfia. What do you think we would say if they wanted Willingham for Paul Wilson and David Weathers? That's how retarded that trade offer is. Ridiculous. Denorfia is going to cost a young arm like Vargas who can go into their bullpen quickly (yes I know he is hurt, when he will pass a physical), and probably Borowski as well as a token of good will. Remember, the Reds are leading the WC or close to it right now, but they are still a rebuilding team trying to figure out their pitching staff. Their success doesn't mean they are going to trade their few young chips for marginal veteran players to push them over the edge. They are not desperate, and we should not treat their franchise like a bunch of idiots.

I think Vargas and Borowski is a fair price to get a relatively young CF who has the potential to produce annual .270/.340/.425 type lines and is at worst league average defensively. Borowski can help settle their pen right now, and Vargas offers them a longterm lefty starter or LOOGY, both of which they really need. Denorfia is a perfect fit for us and could bat 7th behind all the obvious guys for years. This makes to much sense to happen.

And I disagree about Chris Young 03. That kid is going to produce instantly to almost Granderson like levels. And regardless, you want protection for Cabrera so he gets pitched to..... the guy who is going to protect him is Jeremy Hermida as he transforms into Lance Berkman/Brian Giles before our eyes. Kid is going to be a star.

The risk one takes in acquiring a kid like Young, and in no one am I suggesting he doessn't have major league written all over him, is that if someone is acquired, that person needs to perform from his first at bat. The very reason for such an acquisition demands that.

So in my mind, bringing in a rookie, whether Young or Denorfia or fillintheblank, says the Marlins are looking to rebuild and not contend this season, as opposed to bringing in a known quantity, albeit a rental, delivers a more immediate message.

As for who gets traded for who, I'll leave that to Beinfest and company. Like you, I find it amazing how some people expect every trade to be one-sided in our favor. On the Orioles board I happen to be the first to post the Angel's purported interest in Tejada, and by the end of the day people had all these ridiculously lop-sided and complicated deals proposed which in essence sent Tejada and the Orioles refuse for a basketful of the Angels best prospects. All you can do is shake your head in disbelief and let them live in their fantasy world.

Yes I am all for this trade but are we high enough on him to be sure he is going to produce from his first AB like Marlin2003 said our lineup would look very dangerous if so :thumbup

Agree completely with the outrageous trade requests that get thrown around.

But really, I think either of those players accomplishes both (1) potential contending and (2) longterm growth. The second of those need not be discussed, but both of those guys are ready to play right now. Their minor league track records speak for themselves. If this team gets to .500 in July with the crackpot marginally talented OF's we have on the roster right now, both Young and Denorfia are instant upgrades even if they aren't at their production peaks from day 1. Amezaga is doing an admirable job out there, but he's still a super sub Joe McEwing type and will eventually be exposed given the amount of AB he's getting. He's a championship calibre bench player, but he ain't a starter.

Getting a young CF helps this team big time right now and for the future. The real question is, do we go crazy and trade Dontrelle, do we part with an Anibal + other top P prospect package to grab an Ari/TB OF, do you try to focus on a Denorfia type and see if you can acquire him without giving up a tier 1 arm, or do you just go for a stopgap and see what the Giants want for Steve Finley or Oakland for Jay Payton. Neither would probably cost much, and that's assuming the Marlins completely get into the WC race because you wouldn't go for one of them unless you are pushing it for this year only.

I don't know the answer to those choices, but right now I think I'd like to find out what the Reds honestly value Denorfia at, so we can see if a deal would makes sense to us.

I don't think you guys would like the D-Rays' asking price for Crawford, considering they wanted Olsen for Gathright.

Agreed. We have some young arms in the system we could package up nicely for the D Rays.

Adding Crawford by subtracting Willis doesnt improve our team to make a run at the wild card.

I'll echo a lot of others here and say that Crawford would be really really sweet for this team but Tampa's track record is pretty bad in terms of what they will want in return.

I think the Rays current management has the right idea. They are a team that can't afford to just give players like Carl Crawford away. Aubrey Huff and Julio Lugo is who they should be trying to trade.

There management having the right idea doesnt help us out :thumbdown
