jonnylons
We need to win tonight's game - the most important since '97. I know, I have said that before, but I want to see us win tonight, and go into the Mets series having captured our WC slot. That way we can get some of the bench players/struggling pitchers/Lowell some much-needed work. Also, it would be a good lesson for this team, to utilize that killer instinct which is crucial to winning in the postseason. I think we are going to make some big noise in the playoffs - but we have to seal the deal first.
Hotcorner
at what point do you give Pudge a day off? Maybe in the Mets series? Also they need to stay away from Chad Fox today. Would be nice for Penny to go deep, & then use Helling and/or Tejera, maybe even Looper if the game's not on the line. If it's a close game you've still got to go with your best, I'm just saying I hope it doesn't come to that...
Arnie1941
It's going to be exciting. An early wrap will give McKeon a chance to regenerate his bench and some relievers (including Looper and Bump). Then comes the 25 player roster. Wow. It doesn't get better than this. Sweeping the Phills is going to be very though, but we can do it.
FreshFish
With 2+ run lead, we can take our chances with Looper. If he comes thru, it could be big.
83Gator
If we clinch today or tomorrow, and we haven't been able to work Looper into a game, maybe we should give him the start Saturday. Let him go out there with absolutely no pressure for 2 innings and just throw. Then in the 3rd inning, put in whoever we had planned to start, whether it be Helling or Tejera or Bump. If we get lucky, maybe we can get Looper an at-bat; he seems to like hitting. Way back when, the Mets did this a couple of times with Tug McGraw when he would struggle just to give him enough batters to work out problems. Hotcorner
Interesting thought '83. Might keep the starters fresh too. Or at least get him an inning or two somewhere during the Mets series. Not being able to use him AT ALL would really put the pen at a disadvantage in the playoffs because that's a reliever that's just taking up space down there & the team would have 1 less option to use. While I don't agree with your idea to START Looper if we've clinched, you're on the right track and with that I agree completely. Rather than let the guy meltdown (pyschologically) on the bench, if The Fish clinch tonight or tomorrow, the most important thing the team can do between now and Tuesday is to give Loop a chance under Rosenthal's watchful eye to work out his problems and be ready for the playoffs, using him the next three nights a in row (giving Fox and Urbina some rest). 83Gator
Might keep the starters fresh too. That's the big problem with it. They really need to get Redman some innings Saturday. Assuming Redman starts game 3 in the NLDS on Friday October 3, that would be almost 11 days between starts. He's one of those pitchers that says he doesn't do well when he's too strong. So we'll probably need to give Redman 5 innings on Saturday regardless and he shouldn't come in in relief. Maybe they can treat it like a spring training game - Redman for 5 innings, Looper for 2, for 2. I think we should skip Willis on Sunday no matter what. That would make him available as a situational lefty in relief in Game 1 and he'd still be able to start in Game 4 on Saturday. All this is hypothetical in case we clinch, of course. I don't want to put the jinx on. I'll leave that to Nielsosky and Wild Card.

Sounds like the best course of action to me. 5 innings won't overwork him and it will give sufficient work to keep his routine going. The 2+ innings for Looper you mentioned above as well is a must IMO. He needs the work because if he enters the postseason in his current state, he's nothing but a liability to us. He needs to work out the kinks in an environment where if he walks one or two guys we can leave him in and let him try to get himself out of it. All this is hypothetical in case we clinch, of course. I don't want to put the jinx on. I'll leave that to Nielsosky and Wild Card. So true.
Das Texan
Willis only needs to start if we have not clinched by Sunday. If you are going to start Looper...do it Sunday. Hell start Olsen Sunday if you have clinched and give all your regulars the last day off.
CyggyMarlin
clinching early means you can treat the Mets games like Spring Training..bring in pitchers for a few innings to keep them sharp
Marlins4ever
We definately need to clinch now , But i dont know if you all realize how important it is to get Looper back on track . Last nights pitching fiasco just proves to everyone how important the bullpen is . We need to get Lowell back on the field where he can get his swing back , which im sure he hasnt lost much of it . If Lowell is healthy Marlins have alot of decisions to make with starting positions. Cabs is hot and so is Conine , hell what am i talking about , the whole team is hot except maybe for Gonzo but his D is impecable . Tonights game and this last series with the Mets will be very interesting to see. We will be seeing alot of Important Coaching Decisions being made .
