August 9, 200619 yr If you were watching the telecast tonight you probably heard Tommy making reference to how good Borowski has been, and how "if your closer career has been stagnated, then maybe you should come down to South Florida." I was thinking the same thing when he said those words, and I thought about who would be the next lucky closer to revive their career with the fish. I seriously doubt (and prove me otherwise) that Borowski, having the kind of year that he has had, will remain with the Marlins through next season. So just to throw a name out there, I'll say Eddie Guardado. As I say this, he has been doing really well with Cincy, and unless he struggles the rest of the way he probably will stay with them, depending on what the Reds' plans are. Can we find another demoralized closer yet again and turn him around? Post the candidates.
August 9, 200619 yr Kerry Wood. I'm dead serious. I still think he has the makings of an awesome relief pitcher, all his injuries have come about when his arm has gotten too tired after 60-70 pitches. I remember him having a stint in the Cubs bullpen when he was working back his strength last year, and a few times I saw him, he was filthy. I reckon it would be worth a gamble, on an incentive laden deal, as he won't be returning to the Cubs.
August 9, 200619 yr I think Tankersley will get a chance to close but I'm sure we will pick up a veteran as insurance.......here are some candidates (free agents)......and their age 1- Joe Borowski (35) 2- Eddie Guardado (35) 3- Ray King (32) 4- Tom Martin (36) 5- Steve Kline (33) 6- Kent Mercker (38) 7- Mike Remlinger (40) 8- Arthur Rhodes (36) 9- Scott Sauerbeck (34) 10- Mike Stanton (39) 11- Chad Bradford (31) 12- Mike DeJean (35) 13- Francisco Cordero (31) 14- Octavio Dotel (32) *Injured 15- Keith Foulke (33) 16- LaTroy Hawkins (33) 17- Dustin Hermanson (33) 18- Roberto Hernandez (41) 19- Steve Karsay (34) 20- Dan Kolb (31) 21- Matt Mantei (33) 22- Brian Meadows (30) 23- Jose Mesa (40) 24- Guillermo Mota (33) 25- Troy Percival (37) *Injured 26- Jeff Nelson (39) 27- Cliff Politte (32) 28- David Riske (29) 29- Felix Rodriguez (33) *Injured 30- Justin Speier (32) 31- Russ Springer (37) 32- Rudy Seanez (37) 33- Tanyon Sturtze (35) *Injured 34- Mike Timlin (40) 35- David Weathers (36) 36- Rick White (37) 37- Scott Williamson (30) 38- Esteban Yan (31) If the Marlins do sign a veteran, it will probably be someone cheap......my top candidates would be Joe Borowski, Arthur Rhodes, Scott Sauerbeck, Chad Bradford, (2 I really like are Dustin Hermanson and Justin Speier), Roberto Hernandez, Brian Meadows, Jose Mesa, Esteban Yan. Francisco Cordero, Kerry Wood, and Eddie Guardado will probably be too expensive. I would love to sign a veteran like Roberto Hernandez or Jose Mesa to show our young kids how to close. A lot of decent options out there....
August 9, 200619 yr Author Those are a lot of options. i'll throw one more name out there, Danny Baez. Depending on whether or not the Braves lock him up of course. Even though he never struggled he was removed from his closer role since he left TB.
August 9, 200619 yr I'd love to get Keith Foulke. That'd be great to get Kerry Wood, but I doubt the cubs will won't to part with him without getting someone decent in return. I'd trade Pinto, would that get it done?
August 9, 200619 yr Author Where did Looper go? ... :mischief2 Cardinals, and there is no way in hell that we make him our closer again lol
August 9, 200619 yr Tankersly is an absolute beast in the making, just let him close. i agree with this statement. he is pwning all hitters, not just left handers. i am really impressed by his stuff.

August 9, 200619 yr I'd like to give Tank a shot, but he seems to be rattled easily. I don't think it is fair to say Tank gets rattled easily. I've seen him rise to occasion in many tough situations rather than fold. The recent outing against the Dodgers when the ump called ball 4 on a pitch that was right down the middle with the bases loaded and the game on the line did rattle him. But I think now he will be more prepared for umps that decide to take the game out of his hands after that incident. Like Swift said, Tank is an absolute beast in the making. He should get a shot at closing out games next season. He is tough against both righties and lefties. He has the nasty stuff and the competitiveness you like to see in closers. If it works out, the Marlins will have a closer they can rely upon for years to come rather than another one-year veteran closer makeover.
