Terror plot names released: Now are we ready to start profiling at air

Terror Plot Names Released: Now Are We Ready to Profile at Airports?

August 11, 2006

By Doug Powers

The Bank of England has released the names of 19 people who have been taken into custody for plotting to blow up airplanes while in flight from England to the United States. You can count on a bank to be the first to flush out deadbeats ("don't loan these people money!"). Sallie Mae will probably release the rest of the names later today.

Those names are: Phil Johnson, Lori Waters, Marty McWilliams, Steven Fitzwater, Gladys Smith, and Frank Thompson.

What? Is something the matter?

Oh, that's the wrong list. That's the morning tee-time sheet from the country club.

Given that, did something stand out as odd? Of course it did. The funny thing is that the above mentioned people will be scrutinized with equal fervor at airports in the name of "fairness."

Here's the actual list of the 19 who have been taken into custody. All Muslims, all under 35, all male. Hmm, call me crazy, but I'm starting to notice a pattern here.

ALI, Abdula Ahmed

ALI, Cossor

ALI, Shazad Khuram

HUSSAIN, Nabeel

HUSSAIN, Tanvir

HUSSAIN, Umair

ISLAM, Umar

KAYANI, Waseem

KHAN, Assan Abdullah

KHAN, Waheed Arafat

KHATIB, Osmann Adam

PATEL, Abdul Muneem

RAUF, Tayib

SADDIQUE, Mumammed Usman

SARWAR, Assad

SAVANT, Ibrahim

TARIQ, Amin Asmin

UDDIN, Shamin Mohammed

ZAMAN, Waheed

Yes, the plot seems to have been foiled, but in the meantime, while at the airports, everybody, and I mean everybody, is a suspect. The old lady behind you can't take liquid in her carry-on bag, and neither can the middle-eastern looking guy in front of you. Now that's fair. It's also stupid. Airport security resources are stretched thinner than Calista Flockhart because everybody's a suspect so nobody's offended.

There's a scene in the movie "Airplane" where two heavily armed men in berets and one sweet old lady are walking through a metal detector. The buzzer goes off, and security grabs the elderly woman and throws her up against the wall as the two would-be terrorists proceed unimpeded. I wonder how many times something figuratively similar has actually happened.

I had my own experience in this area not long ago while preparing to fly home. At the airport I was singled out for "more extensive" checking. Three other guys and I were taken aside. There I sat with the other searchees, one who looked like Ward Cleaver without the rebellious edge, another who appeared to have fallen off the cover of the Saturday Evening Post, a finely dressed baby-faced gentleman who was missing only one fashion accessory - a "first place, Rick Moranis look-alike competition" ribbon, and me.

There we were, in the security area for some extra searching - a Barbershop Quartet of nerds, button-downs, and people who can't go to the bathroom without a permission slip from their neighborhood association. A terrorist threat disguised as a middle aged Star Trek convention if you ever saw one.

Sitting there, I noticed the people who were being allowed to proceed with far less scrutiny. I felt like the old lady in "Airplane." I don't mind doing my part as I understand that under certain sleep-deprived conditions I can look "shifty," but that was a comical morning to say the least.

Given the nature of the threat as it exists, wouldn't the vast majority of Arabs who aren't terrorists understand the need for further scrutiny at airports? Yeah, you're right, probably not. I might not appreciate it if the police decided to start pulling over everybody who looked Irish as a DUI suspect either, but the terrorist threat is far different.

Talk to many people who are in-the-know in the airline security business and they'll admit that the current system is kind of a joke. Don't forget that airport security is federalized, so, in other words, the government is in charge of your in-flight safety. The long-and-short of the current system is this: Pretend you're in an airport and all the screeners are members of Congress and FEMA. Feel safer?

This particular terror plot may have been thwarted, but a major threat still exists that we're still not serious about. As soon as I read about a major terror plot being foiled by airport authorities looking in the carry-on bag of a little old lady from Pasadena, then I'll be on board with the current system.

The man speaks the truth.

Even though Airplane! is a comedy, I will guaruntee you this has happened numerous times. Supposedly, after 9/11, America's airport security got tighter but after flying frequently after 9/11 and before it, I'd say it's stayed the same and maybe, at some airports, even gotten worse.

He's absolutely correct. Just because we don't want to appear discriminatory in the airport, doesn't mean we can't be realistic.

If a Muslim male gets pulled over for further examining, why should he be offended? All the terrorist attacks and plots in the past 15 years have hovered around MUSLIMS. It's not racist and it's not discriminatory. It's fawking fact.

I have Muslim friends; I have many middle eastern ancestors. I mean, jeez--does it make me a racist to suspect that a terrorist MIGHT be DARK SKINNED MIDDLE EASTERN?

A lot longer than that.

My 8th grade year, we went on a trip to Philly. Going through airport security coming back they stopped us suspicious looking middle schoolers and let much older men pass through without a problem.

At least now, whenever I've gone someplace, everyone has been checked. Regardless of age, ethnicity, or religion.

And profiling is only bad to a certain point. We all profile every day. Its just human nature.

Example: Does any sane person go waltzing up to a guy carrying an AK-47?

That is profiling.

Let me ask you a serious question.

Do you mean to tell me that if you went to the airport, and saw a woman wearing a birka walking with a male companion or two through a security checkpoint without being thoroughly searched before boarding the same plane you are to board, that you would think nothing of it at all? That it wouldn't bother you?

Come on, dude. You'd want that person and her companions searched thoroughly (yes, more thoroughly then the average caucasion) before you board that aircraft.

And if you deny that, forgive me, but you really are a moron.

He is anything but a moron. He is one of the only, if not the only person in this topic that ive seen stand up for eqality. Look, we all know that all of the terrorists have been muslim, and sure, if i see someone suspicous who DIDNT get checked the right way as everyone else it would be something too wonder about.. But you aqre actually calling JJ a moron for not encouraging racial profiling. Thats kind of moronic if you ask me.

Do I think that anyone suspicious should be searched more throughouly, yes. Do i think that being a muslim makes you suspicious? No, and I do belive that is wrong. We can't be Gung Ho at the site of a woman in a burka.

I guess for convience you could make separate lines.. Whites, Blacks, Asains - Muslims. Every man woman and child gets strip searched, can't carry luggage because you can hide a bomb anywhere...

Yes Accord, RACIAL PROFILING IS RACISM!

Oh, and no, im not going to classisfy that with a political party, and I think that that ws unnecessary, and is part of the season that the country is so far split apart. It doesn't have to be that if you belive something, the other major party thinks the opposite. wow..

End Rant.

Unfortunately deciding who is and isn't 'suspicious' is entirely at the judgement of the security officer. And you can't say, "Look Chuck, if you see someone who looks like they might have a bomb, search them."

Without profiling of some sort, alot of police work would be impossible.

with profiling, we give ourselves a reason to think we are better than everyone else...why is equality such a threatening notion in this country...i guess some people still have a dream in this country while others believe chillin wit whitey is the only flava in town :whistle

You and Jimmy need to wake up from your little dream world. The year is 2006 and there have been more than 5,561 terrorist attacks carried out around the globe by muslim extremists since 9/11. It is downright ignorant not to profile the ONE group of people responsible for all of these attacks. The fact of the matter is that it's highly unlikely an 87 year old grandmother and her three grandkids will hijack and airplane and fly it into buildings.

Without profiling of some sort, alot of police work would be impossible.

Profiling doesn't mean 'get someone because of their race'. How do you think some drug dealers are caught? Some type of profiling is done. Whether it be the way the subject is acting, what they are doing, etc. there is some reason why a police officer encounters that person.

I've had to do advance screening twice. I'm a large, 6'4" multi-racial male with tan/dark skin, dark hair, and I wear sun glasses alot and almost every time I'm at the airport. Did I get flagged randomly? Maybe not or maybe I did. I didn't take offense to it or call racism.

I'm almost relieved when they've checked me because of my look and physique and I'm glad to know this stuff is going on. Both times the people were polite to me, I wasn't delayed and my now fiancee knew what was going on. Don't concoct some image of unfair treatment/racism during the process. It's not like that. I'd rather them check someone like me then a middle schooler, a 49 year old frequent flyer, or an 87 year old grandmother.

I know you like to think that if Bush wasn't in charge the world would be full of gumdrop trees, everyone would eat ice cream all day, and the most competitive sport would be hopscotch but the world isn't like that and things need to change and adapt to ensure the safety of the country and places around the world.

I think profiling is a realistic safety precaution.

I'd rather them check someone like me then a middle schooler, a 49 year old frequent flyer, or an 87 year old grandmother.

I know you like to think that if Bush wasn't in charge the world would be full of gumdrop trees, everyone would eat ice cream all day, and the most competitive sport would be hopscotch but the world isn't like that and things need to change and adapt to ensure the safety of the country and places around the world.

hey, i figured out this internet thing somewhat...maybe ill get that typing down someday...i may need your infinite wisdom to guide my path though...and drug dealers are caught with something called PROOF and evidence...sorry to inform you, but the justice system doesnt work on hunches...hunches may provide clues and educated guesses from time to time but come on...as long as there is a bill of rights, there shouldnt be profiling...its a racist policy, end of story

jimmy after your two-faced comment in the taurasi thread, I don't know how many people are actually going to listen to what you say now.

yes because women's basketball and politics have lots in common...plus...men are better basketball players than women...but thats another story

Without profiling of some sort, alot of police work would be impossible.

with profiling, we give ourselves a reason to think we are better than everyone else...why is equality such a threatening notion in this country...i guess some people still have a dream in this country while others believe chillin wit whitey is the only flava in town :whistle Learn how to type first of all, that crap is annoying as hell to read and if you're over the age of 12 and would like to be taken seriously, type correctly.
