August 28, 200619 yr Girardi's babying of the pitchers at the start of the season (something Loria and Co. didn't want) gives us a better shot of not hitting the September wall, but still fatigue should be an issue. Still, we can all thank Daunte Culpepper's knee for the absolute lack of pressure and focus on this team. To me, that's the biggest thing of it all. Not until after the win did I realize how close we are to the Wild-Card, pretty crazy.
August 28, 200619 yr We are not just going to win the Wild Card but like I have said since the begining of the season we will shock the world. Marlin win it all for the 3rd time!
August 28, 200619 yr One of the things giving me doubts is the Phillies. Things seem to be regressing back to normal (Phillies have the Marlins number again). They've been playing pretty good baseball lately and the Marlins still have a bunch of games against them. This is a good point. The Phillies are almost as hot as the Marlins right now. The Marlins have pretty much been their beat up doll the past 2 years. Im more worried about the Phillies than the Mets or Dbacks. The Mets will start resting ppl soon anyway.
August 28, 200619 yr 2 back in the loss column, 4 to leap-frog (two of whom we can take care of ourselves in Cincy and Philly) make it incredibly likely that we won't have to do a hell of a lot of scoreboard watching if we can just take care of business. Seriously, I had no idea we were this close until this evening, that's how badly this run has been covered, just disgusting. If I were a betting man, I'd take the Padres, but I don't think it'd be a stop-the-world-shocker simply based on how we're sorting out in the standings at the moment. 2 games back. I still can't get over that.
August 28, 200619 yr just a few numbers of comparison (low water mark during season, record after 129 games, and the end result, of teams that have recently come back from the "dead").....sorry if it's been brought up previously..... Numbers courtesy of ESPN.com 2003 Marlins: Our low water mark was 19-29, 11.5 GB(of WC lead) at the time. After 129 games 69-60, 1.5 games back of WC lead.....2nd in WC race End of season: 91-71, win WC by 3 games 2005 Astros: low water mark was 15-30, 11.5 GB(WC lead) at the time after 129 games 68-61, 1.5 GB of WC lead....tied for 3rd WC race End of season: 89-73, win WC by 1 game 2006 Marlins: low water mark was 11-31, 13 GB (WC lead) at the time after 129 games 63-66, 3 games back of WC lead.....5th in WC race End of season:???????? I don't know if we'll do it. But, currently, there's plenty of time. In comparison to previous teams, it wouldn't be a stretch to win it. Of course, there are more previous teams that haven't won the WC (failed comebacks). What a ride......enjoy it.....win or lose, this comeback has been incredible.
August 28, 200619 yr They still have to outplay, what, six more teams? That's going to be really tough. When it's late August there should be a law about no playoff talk til you get to be .500. welcome to the National League

People talk about the Marlins overachieving but the Phillies are the real overachievers between the two teams at this point. Their starting rotation is laughable (outside Myers and Hamels) and I would take our lineup over their lineup. They are also missing key players now in Rowand and Flash Gordon. We have a good chance of winning most of the 10 games we have left against them.
August 28, 200619 yr I thought we were 3 games back? Loss column. All that matters as far as I'm concerned.

It's so much of a hitter's park that their lack of a solid rotation doesn't even seem that significant. Yea but our bats are so hot right now and the starting pitching is becoming so consistent, that it could be our advantage...
August 28, 200619 yr I thought we were 3 games back? Loss column. All that matters as far as I'm concerned. Oooh, I see. :thumbup
August 28, 200619 yr 2 back in the loss column, we've got as good a chance as anyone, and better pitching than most of the other WC contenders.

You are so on target in this post. It all comes down to the Phillies and what we do with them. If we can win tomorrow and take at least 1 in St Louis, and possibly 2 in Milwaukee we should still be in a position to contend with AZ, Philly and the Reds for that WC. I hope we can miss Webb this time around when AZ visits the Fish Tank, because no one else is a problem in that AZ rotation for us -- if we could only sweep that series -- then ANYTHING is possible :thumbup Get this, the WC could be won or lost IN MIAMI ! 3 with Cincy and 2 with Philly IN MIAMI to finish the season. Talk about an exciting way to finish the season !!!! :thumbup
August 28, 200619 yr Figures the Cardinals start to get hot right when its time to play them. Win 1 in St Louis, that's all I ask. Win 2 and I will be estatic.
August 28, 200619 yr The way we're playing the Cards should be swept. I'm expecting the most right now...
August 28, 200619 yr NO WE DONT HAVE A CHANCE PERIOD! .............................. :whistle
August 28, 200619 yr We can be third in the wild card standings by the end of tonight (or, rather, sometime around 1:10 AM EST)
August 28, 200619 yr Funny thing is I made a bet with my parents that the marlins would make the playoffs, back right when the horrible days were ending, and that if I won they would have to get me tickets to those games... needless to say, I have had an ear to ear smile lately. The only thing that makes this better... imagine how we'll do next year! BTW, if I lose the bet I clean/wash the car... not a bad tradeoff...
August 28, 200619 yr NO WE DONT HAVE A CHANCE PERIOD! ............................. :whistle Reverse psychology -- I like it LOL
August 28, 200619 yr As the season wears on in the back of my head I worry about the young pitchers burning out, but then not seeing it happen. At this point, they are so close, my heart and my head tell me they have a chance. The brass ring is there for the taking, damn everything, full speed ahead!
August 28, 200619 yr Honestly, do you think this team has a chance to win the Wild Card? Will our starting pitchers continue their great pitching or will they start to tire before the season is over? Will our hitting hold up? I am torn between this run is too good to be true and how can this miracle season end. I'd say since the guys are only 3 games back in the WC, that gives them a chance to win it.

Not all young pitchers hit the DL as often as our old young pitchers... lol
