September 21, 200619 yr It's incredibly hard to project the Sox team right now because there will either be a lot of turnover or a little turnover in the off-season. They could easily go either way and it's not much of a stretch. 1 - Coco Crisp, CF 2 - Kevin Youkilis, 1B 3 - David Ortiz, DH 4 - Manny Ramirez, LF 5 - Aramis Ramirez, 3B 6 - Wily Mo Pena, RF 7 - Jason Varitek, C 8 - Dustin Pedroia, 2B 9 - Alex Gonzalez, SS Alex Cora, SS/2B Eric Hinske, 3B/1B George Kottaras, C Dave Murphy, OF 1 - Roger Clemens, RHP 2 - Curt Schilling, RHP 3 - Josh Beckett, RHP 4 - Tim Wakefield, RHP 5 - Matt Clement/Jon Lester/Other Lenny DiNardo, LHP Kyle Snyder, RHP/Other Manny Delcarmen, RHP Craig Hansen, RHP Keith Foulke, RHP Justin Speier, SU Jonathan Papelbon, CL Obviously purely hypothetical. If Ramirez opts out of his deal with the Cubs, which I think he will and he becomes a big time priority for Boston. Clemens has to pitch next year, which I think he will and if the deadline indications are true, Boston would be a frontrunner for his services and Henry and Lucchinno will do what they can to get him and to pacify their irrational fears of loss of revenue. Those are two rather large signings that hamper the FO's ability to add much else to the bullpen or the lower half of the lineup. Gonzalez accepts one year of arbitration and is kept to shore up that defense which weakens with Pedroia and Ramirez. With those two signings, the bullpen is again a concern so Papelbon is left in the closer role where he is a proven commodity and the only legitimite closing option in house or on the FA market. Speier is the type of move the FO has to make, it could be him but it has to be one of the other 'high end' arms on the market (Jamie Walker would be another). I'd say this is definitely the best case scenario. Other scenarios: 1. Manny Ramirez is traded.Subtract Roger Clemens Add Ervin Santana Add Alfonso Soriano And/Or Carlos Lee Subtract Wily Mo Pena (contingent on adding Lee and Soriano) Add Sean Casey Put Jonathan Papelbon into rotation Put Matt Clement into bullpen 2. Boston's FO goes hard after Daisuke Matsuzaka and signs himSubtract Roger Clemens Subtract Aramis Ramirez Add Sean Casey 3. Aramis Ramirez stays with Cubs or signs elsewhereAdd Sean Casey Add Roger Clemens Add Ted Lilly Obviously all those can be mismatched and added and subtracted from one another. I'm dealing with hypotheticals and not really considering all the subsequent moves that will have to/need to be made in some of these. The best case scenario is what I posted first, one that I do think is plausible though. The worst case would be a domino effect of Aramis somewhere else coupled with Roger's retirement, Matsuzuka becoming a Mariner or Yankee, Barry Zito becoming a Dodger and the Sox having to overpay for the Lilly's of the world. If that were to happen alot more trades happen with pieces like Crisp and others being dealt. The best case of that worst case is Manny Ramirez being traded netting the Sox Santana (among others) and Soriano or Lee. Are you confused yet? Good.
September 21, 200619 yr I would love to see them sign Zito there starting rotation needs to stay healthy

Loretta 2B Gonzalez SS Ramirez LF Ortiz DH Lowell 3B A.Jones CF Youkilis 1B Pena RF Varietek C Beckett Schilling Clement Wakefield Papelbon Tavarez CL: Foulke Timlin 1. taveraz will never be in another MLB rotation, let alone the red sox's. 2. gonzo is a bottom of the order hitter, switch him with youk in that lineup. 3. gut feeling, but jones would hit in front of mike lowell. varitek will not hit last, pena probably will. 4. switch papelbon's and wake's spots in the rotation. 5. foulke likely won't close unless he is fully back on track. I'd prefer to see timlin, unless they sign somone. I don't believe foulke's off the DL yet, is he? I may be totally off.
