Most Disappointing Fact of the Year

Featured Replies

Can't beat teams within our own division.

You want to play on the playoffs, you gotta beat teams within your own division.

All I want is to play spoilers for the Phils. But my guess is they only win one or get sweep.

with so little left, I just want to win for the sake of winning, even if it means nothing.

But I agree, need to play better vs our division.

So what your saying is DONT pitch to Howard

If you look at the pre-May 21 record when the Marlins were still floundering and the post-May 21 record when they finally got their act together (the win-loss record I care more about when it comes to this season), there are some differences.

Pre-May 21 record vs the NL East ?

Mets: 0-2

Phillies: 1-2

Braves: 1-6

Nats: 3-2

Post-May 21 record vs the NL East ?

Mets: 7-9

Phillies: 4-6

Braves: 7-5

Nats: 8-4

So, once the Marlins started playing to their potential they completely turned around their play against the Braves and beat them pretty convincingly (despite the terrible series we had recently), even winning a 3-game series in Atlanta in July. The last time the Marlins had done that before this year was 2002. We dominated the Nats. We have had our problems with the Phillies and Mets, but our records against both are not terrible post-May 21. And we all know from our last series against the Mets at DS that we could have easily had a post-May 21 of 9-7 against them had it not been for a couple of implosions.

Did you guys see that episode of "South Park" where Cartman gets a phonics monkey? That was tits.

for me its the amount of blown saves for the bullpen.. nothing more disappointing than that.

Reason for this was our BULLPEN, POINT BLANK, we had these games.

Not having anything but rooks & prospects hurt our chances of upgrading at the deadline. We couldn't buy a bullpen. So part of the blame must be on the FO for degrading the talent expereince by as much as they did. They should have of insisted on a few veteran players. Maybe they learned a lesson, and next time they will have some older players to use as bargaining chips.

Veterans wouldn't have brought in impact relief arms by trade, but you do make a solid point about having veteran arms. But for a different reason: using them to pitch games. They likely wouldn't have hit a wall as some of the younger pitchers did.

If you can't tell, I'm still frustated we dedicated nearly all our resources to acquiring pitching prospects and barely any to hitters.

I've always maintained that this franchise has, no matter the owner, never put much into developing hitters. We gave up Adrian Gonzalez who looks like he'll be a decent or even possibly above average hitter, and any other hitters have come via trades but never out of our farm system. Willingham has an upside, but Hermida was basically a bust. Then again I'm just a fan and not an expert.

We didn't "give up" Adrian Gonzalez. We got Urbina for him and without Urbina we don't win the World Series. Hermida is hardly a bust after 1 injury plagued season.

As for developing hitters, I could name a bunch if I took the time to think of all the names but here's two besides Cabrera, Luis Castillo and Mark Kotsay. I'd say we developed them fine.

Admin I love ya bro, but I gotta respectfully disagree with you on Hermida. He was, to say the least, disappointing. Even when he was healthy, his HR production was way below projections. He may still develop, and I hope he does.

We got rid of Kostay for Matt Clement, who we in turn traded for Dontrelle (if I am correct on my trades), so I'll give them a pass on that. As for Urbina, we did win with his help, but we maybe could have gotten him without trading away the best hitting prospect we had in our system. If Adrian goes on to hit 35+ HR's a year for the Padres and helps them win a bunch of NL West, NL Championships and a couple of WS titles will it have been worth it ? We could have really used him a 1st base this year. Jacobs did a fine job but wasn't he a lousy lefty-hitter ?

Key #1 ..just win the fu*king game

Key #2...that guy, Ryan Howard, let's not pitch to him..

we also had D-Lee as a stalwart at 1B, and got Delgado after that, crying over Gonzalez who is just now making it in the big leagues 3 seasons after we traded him for a guy that we won the World Series with is a little weak, IMO.

Not really, as he has had a big impact on the Padres this year, and is a reason that they may win the West or WC. Did Mike Jacobs make as much of an impact ? Would we have been better off with Gonzalez ? Remember we let him go in a trade, that brought us Urbina, who we let go in FA the next year. Gonzalez should have brought us more of a return....as it is we have nothing but a part of WS title, which granted he helped us win, but lose more in the long run. I feel we could have gotten Urbina for less than Gonzalez, and the FO screwed up on this one.

My disappointing stat of the year is the 30-some games we've lost after leading past the 7th inning, most (or 2nd most) in the Majors.

Yeah, the bullpen was disappointing. I expected it to not be very good though. It's likely not going to be upgraded via free agency this off-season either.

I wouldn't really say that. A bunch of no-names are pitching like no-names. Everyone else on the team is playing way over their heads, why not them too?

I believe the projections of Hermida's power were too much too soon. He had shown in the minors that power developed slowly at every level every season.

Then why was so much made of him before the season ? It wasn't me that was pumping him up, but the Marlins commercials & pre-season pub from the team that got me excited to see him play.

Because he's a former top draft pick coming off an incredible minor league season and a record debut? He was the natural choice for both rookie of the year and one of few Marlins most people even knew about.

Most dissapointing stat (and why the team is going to watching the playoffs rather than playing) 29th in fielding % in MLB.

when the padres win a "bunch of nl west, nl west championships and a couple of ws series titles" get back to me. since the span of the trade the marlins have one and the padres 0

It is hard to say whether the bullpen or the poor (sometimes comical) fielding was more of an Achilles heel this season but one thing is certain ? if we are going to make a playoff run next season one or both will need to improve substantially. Hopefully both will improve, though the bullpen needs can be corrected more easily. The Marlins can go some way in improving defense by picking up a centerfielder with great range and a great arm this offseason. Way too many games were given away this year through defensive miscues and bullpen blowups.
