October 5, 200619 yr He and my sister were highschool sweethearts. They still talk from time to time. Pretty much all i have to add after everything else that has been said.....oh and he does a lot of real estate buying and selling....
October 5, 200619 yr i was actually in his store the other day and met him...I had never seen him in person, but he came up and said hi...didn't realize it was him until the clerk said "Alex, where'd you put the bags"...everyone seemed to know him though, genunine nice guy from my look at him.
October 5, 200619 yr I remember being devastated when he went down in 1997 right before the NLCS was starting. Of course Livan came in and simply mowed down the Braves in game 4 and was pretty good in the world series. One thing that I sort of recall frustrating me about Fernandez was his Grant Hill like insistence to try comebacks while taking up a chunk of the payroll that we could have used in those years between 1997 and 2003.
October 5, 200619 yr I actually thought of him being a pitching coach option for us earlier today, but he's probably been away from the game too long to jump right to the majors. I doubt he would go into professional coaching now. He's really into coaching his son which is in his final year of middle school and I believe he wants to coach him through high school as well so I dont see him making any sort of jump to professional baseball anytime soon at least.
October 5, 200619 yr Who took his place in the World Series? Tony Saunders. Jeez, that spot in the rotation turned out to be kind of a jinx, didn't it? oh yeah, tony got hurt when he was with the devil-rays i think it was. I don't think he got to pitch in any of the world series games though. What are you talking about? He went against Jaret Wright I believe. I actually thought of him being a pitching coach option for us earlier today, but he's probably been away from the game too long to jump right to the majors. ALEX WANTS NOTHING TO DO WITH BASEBAL. i was actually in his store the other day and met him...I had never seen him in person, but he came up and said hi...didn't realize it was him until the clerk said "Alex, where'd you put the bags"...everyone seemed to know him though, genunine nice guy from my look at him. Which store are you talking about?
October 5, 200619 yr Which store are you talking about? strike zone...i think thats what its called...its right across from my house...$11.95 for 3 baseballs!!!!
October 6, 200619 yr im pretty sure livan took alex's spot. tony was starting in the nlcs due to his numbers that year against ATL (started game 3 or 4) and livan didnt get a start until game 5 after alex got hurt and kevin brown couldnt go due to a stomach ailment or something like that. the rest is history. flu
October 7, 200619 yr Alex Fernandez is a true S. Florida legend he was one of the Marlins first huge free agent signings. One of the best pitchers ever to play for UM http://www.baseball-reference.com/f/fernaal01.shtml
October 7, 200619 yr Who took his place in the World Series? Tony Saunders. Did he? Tony had been in the starting rotation already. We called him the Braves Killer. He started one game in the WS and one in the NLCS. All other starts went to Brown, Leiter, and Hernandez. I guess you could say he took his place but I always felt that Livan did. Technically speaking he tore that rotator cuff in the NLDS start in San Fran and just tried to play through it. He was pulled in the NLCS. I remember being devastated when he went down in 1997 right before the NLCS was starting. While he was rehabbing insurance covered his payroll. When he was trying his comebacks he was teaching the kids about hard work and dedication. He got injured in the '97 NLCS, almost threw a no-hitter in Chicago in '97. He tried a few come backs that didn't go so well and I think he officially retired in 2001. That almost no-no was a thing of beauty. A South Florida native pitching in snow flurries. Good thing he had those White Sox years on his resume. LOL BTW Where is his store??
October 7, 200619 yr Alex Fernandez's Strikezone: Cooper City 12323 SW 55th Street, Suite 1007, Cooper City, FL 33330 (954) 252-5755 - Fax: (954) 252-2755 The Falls 8865 SW 132nd Street, Miami, FL 33176 (786) 430-1590 - Fax: (786) 430-1589

October 8, 200619 yr Alex Fernandez's Strikezone: Cooper City 12323 SW 55th Street, Suite 1007, Cooper City, FL 33330 (954) 252-5755 - Fax: (954) 252-2755 The Falls 8865 SW 132nd Street, Miami, FL 33176 (786) 430-1590 - Fax: (786) 430-1589 Oh well. That let's me out. Someone down there want to let Alex know a passport isn't needed to get into PBC??? Heck, I will even help him with the inside scoop of getting the licenses, etc...
October 8, 200619 yr Alex lived in Miami Lakes for a long time but I believe now lives in Broward in the area of Southwest Ranches (Davie). I know a realtor who has worked with him on various occasions and he is very into the whole South Florida real estate market so I think he's probably familiar with PBC.
October 8, 200619 yr You think he might be interested in becoming Pitching coach for Freddi? Freddi would have an entire Cubano coaching staff if not him then bring in Luis Tiant
October 10, 200619 yr Alex lived in Miami Lakes for a long time but I believe now lives in Broward in the area of Southwest Ranches (Davie). I know a realtor who has worked with him on various occasions and he is very into the whole South Florida real estate market so I think he's probably familiar with PBC. I was just kidding around Strike. I can't see myself driving to Cooper City or SW 132nd St in Miami to browse a store. I hear there is a traffic flow problem down that way. Besides, he wouldn't want to open a shop here and take the chance of getting caught up in the new stereotype we have of ex-MLB pitchers. It seems they like to rob jewelry stores. Of course current MLB pitchers apparently like to rear end garbage trucks just to injure the drivers. Pitchers hate garbage truck drivers and their Porches can do so much damage to them by driving up underneath them, dontcha know.
October 10, 200619 yr you don't know who alex fernandez is? he's the owner of that Sporting Goods store on Flamingo Road.
