October 5, 200619 yr Hey wasn't sure where to post this please move it if i'm wrong but I didn't really start following baseball until around 2000 and today i was going through some baseball cards and i came across a Marlins pitcher from a 1997 special edition WS package named Alex Fernandez. I know nothing about him, and his numbers were good, so can anybody clue me in on what happened to him?

Tore his rotator cuff in the '97 NLCS and pitched sparingly in '99 and '00...now owns "Alex Fernandez's Strike Zone" as seen in commercials during Marlins games.
October 5, 200619 yr He got injured in the '97 NLCS, almost threw a no-hitter in Chicago in '97. He tried a few come backs that didn't go so well and I think he officially retired in 2001.
October 5, 200619 yr Who took his place in the World Series? Tony Saunders. Jeez, that spot in the rotation turned out to be kind of a jinx, didn't it?

October 5, 200619 yr im pretty sure livan took alex's spot. tony was starting in the nlcs due to his numbers that year against ATL (started game 3 or 4) and livan didnt get a start until game 5 after alex got hurt and kevin brown couldnt go due to a stomach ailment or something like that. the rest is history.
October 5, 200619 yr alex actually had a decent 1999 season, albeit shortened due to his injury problems. record wouldnt say he did that great, but the other numbers were there.

Yeah...whoops, you're right. Brain fart. Livan was used in the NLCS in long relief before getting the late start. My mistake.

He was a great pitcher. Do to elbow problems he had to hang them up after the Marlins tried to deal him to the San Diego Padres. He was used in 1998 as a pinch hitter (a good one too). I know Alex Fernandez personally.
October 5, 200619 yr Its sad what happened to Alex. I know him personally and hes a great guy. Yea owns strike zone and a landscaping business I believe. Also has a few High School fields named after him...Monsignor Pace's field as well as Hialeah High's.
October 5, 200619 yr Alex was a damn good pitcher and it was a real shame his career had to end due to injury. It was a fully torn rotator cuff and I don't know how he managed to come back at all. He won 17 games for us in '97. I was there when he came back and beat Al Leiter & the Mets on Opening Day. He won the NL Comeback Player of the Year Award. I'll never forget watching him fighting the tears when he announced his retirement.
October 5, 200619 yr I remember Alex pretty well, still remember seeing him hurting himself over and over on ESPN. I'm surprised more people don't know about him on here, considering he helped lead us to our first WS.
October 5, 200619 yr I actually thought of him being a pitching coach option for us earlier today, but he's probably been away from the game too long to jump right to the majors.
