November 9, 200619 yr Signed yesterday with the same agency as Alfonso Soriano, David Ortiz, Anibal Sanchez, Yusmeiro Petit, Pedro Martinez and others. Can't get too detailed since it's priveledged information, I guess, but the scoop I got was that he's, sadly, prepared to go to arbitration as it doesn't seem that we're overly receptive to a long-term deal at this juncture, and hence his need for a "super agent firm." Just thought I'd share.

November 10, 200619 yr The Marlins need to bite the bullet and sign Miguel to a long term deal before he reaches arbitration. I know it probably won't happen, but in this instance they need to make an exception to their one-year deal SOP.
November 10, 200619 yr Funny thing is many of them are listed as having different agents. I assume though he signed with Bentz and/or Cuza which is one hell of a lot better than Scott Boras. I think you're reading more into him changing agents, it hapens all the time. All these guys have their roots in the old SFX group who represented a ton of players. Much to do about nothing. The Fish pay him what he deserves, he knows it, the Marlins know it. I suspect the reason he changed agents had more to do with nationalities and marketing than anything having to do with the Marlins. This isn't after all like the Red Sox. There's no ball to be dropped here.
November 10, 200619 yr Author I have no need to prove anything to you, 2003. Believe what you want to believe. There all represented by the same agency, with the baseball operations office soon to be based in Miami with the marketing branch based here in New York on 42nd street. There's no reason for me to lie, or even stick my neck out giving details since it's so apparently unwanted. I simply felt it was worthwhile to try to loosen people up for the inevitable disappointment of this going to arbitration this year, since so many feel gung-ho about locking Miggy up.

Stop being so paranoid.

November 10, 200619 yr Lol. Do you think I don't know who SFX is? You might notice I mentioned them in my post. I knew immediately who you were talking about. I was simply saying I didn't know which particular agent he signed with. Tellem and all those guys have been around for years with Live Nation and Clear Channel, going out on their own, coming back, it's a very small community. SFX has changed hands so many times you need a program to figure who's in and who's out. Your contention that oh "sadly" you just wanted to prepare everyone for the eventuality that Miggy probably goes to arbitration is laughable when everyone on the planet knows Miggy is about to set a record for first year arbitration awards in the sport. Of course he's going to threaten to go to arbitration. After the year he had a blind postal clerk with a speech impediment could handle his arbitration and get him a bazillion dollars for chrissakes. He's hired these guys for what they can do for him in the future with promotions, investments, eventual contract negotiations, etc. Like I said, arbitration for Miguel Cabrera is a walk in the park but I doubt he actually get's there. They'll settle as the saying goes "at the courthouse steps" (I know, I know, there really isn't a courthouse) but he has to posture as if he is. Everyone knows this is how these things go. He's going to contend he's worth a bazillion dollars, the Marlins will counter he's worth a two dollars less than a bazillion dollars and guess what, they'll settle for a dollar less than a bazillion. And by the way, nothing about this is privileged. The second he signs or signed it becomes a matter of public record. So don't be pretending this is all confidential when it isn't. If you know, everyone who needed to know already knew last week.
November 10, 200619 yr If Miguel Cabrera isn't signed long term (or at least not given an adequate offer) and he leaves anytime in the next 10 years, I'm quitting as a Marlins fan. I'll root for the Seibu Lions.
November 10, 200619 yr IMO too much paranoia is associated with arbitration. It's really not that big a deal as some seem to think. It's not like the player can go someplace else if he dosen't get what he feels (or his agent feels) he is worth. It's just a step in the overall process. There is no ball to be dropped here. Miggy will be signed to a one year deal this year and next year. He can not argue the length of the contracts, just the amounts. He will get a fair contract each year. '09 may see him get a longer one to start the year or maybe just another 1 year deal and then reworked during the season. I would expect starting the season with a long term contract. The players, agents, and FO actually talk all the time and each knows what is going through the others minds and where things are heading in the long run. This is one of those times I would say don't sweat the small stuff. We have more important things to worry about. CF and BP head the list of where we should be focusing right now. Miggy and DTrain will be in teal next year.
November 10, 200619 yr It actually seems like they're exploring long-term deals for miggy and d-train. I cant think of more worthy players in Marlin history...at least in miggy's case.
November 10, 200619 yr I could see us giving him a Delgado type deal - Just for arguement's sake, $4MM '07, $5MM '08, $15MM '09, and $20MM 2010. Of course everything hinges on the ballpark, and the low/high give the FO the option to move him if revenues don't materialize.

Give him a Rick DiPietro 15 year contract. Then I'll be happy.
