November 19, 200619 yr Reds reinforce bullpen with Stanton Ken Rosenthal / FOXSports.com Posted: 1 hour ago The Reds, moving to reinforce their bullpen, have reached agreement on a two-year contract with free-agent left-hander Mike Stanton, FOXSports.com has learned. The deal, pending a physical, will include a vesting option for a third season. Stanton, 39, pitched for both the Nationals and Giants last season, finishing with a 3.99 ERA in 672/3 innings. After getting traded to the Giants on July 28, he filled in for injured closer Armando Benitez, converting eight of 11 save opportunities. The Reds lack an established closer on their roster. Right-hander David Weathers, the club leader with 12 saves last season, is a free agent. Left-hander Eddie Guardado likely is out for 2007 after undergoing elbow-ligament transplant surgery. The Reds are expected to announce the signings of both Stanton and free-agent shortstop Alex Gonzalez this week. http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/6188014
November 19, 200619 yr Do we have enough LH relief pitchers? I don't mind this pickup. We still have more holes to fill.
November 19, 200619 yr Improving your bullpen does not mean signing as many average arms (at best) as possible. Did you see the Reds bullpen last year? Average is a big upgrade. I'll wait to see how much money we gave him before I complain.
November 19, 200619 yr I wouldn't be surprised if you end up with Herges and/or Borowski. I wouldn't be surprised if we signed every bullpen arm available. Keep Herges away though.

November 19, 200619 yr he was a pleasant surprise for us when we traded for him, although the guy we traded for him will likely come back and bite us in the ass just like Liriano
November 20, 200619 yr Improving your bullpen does not mean signing as many average arms (at best) as possible. I disagree. Other than the great ones, almost all bullpen arms are average. I think the best way to solidify a bullpen in terms of middle relief is to keep rotating those average arms and hope you catch lighting in a bottle (SEE: Cliff Politte and Dustin Hermanson, 2005 Chicago White Sox). The problem is, the good bullpen also needs at least 1 REALLY good setup man, and a REALLY good closer, and the Reds have neither.
November 20, 200619 yr wow...2 guarnateed years and a vesting 3rd year for a near 40yr old....for 2 good months? This reliever market is nuts. Why not just agree to a deal with Weathers though?
