PISCATAWAY, N.J. ? (AP) ? Rutgers coach Greg Schiano will stay with the school he led to national prominence this season, rather than return to take over the troubled Miami program.

 

"This is where I want to be. This is the job I want to have,'' Schiano said Monday.

 

Schiano, who was Miami's defensive coordinator in 1999 and 2000, said he spoke with the Hurricanes' athletic director Sunday night.

 

"We're just scratching the surface here at Rutgers,'' Schiano said. ??The sky's the limit. We're going to do great things here. We haven't done it yet.''

 

Schiano has orchestrated No. 16 Rutgers' rise from one of the nation's lowliest programs in the past six seasons. At 10-2 (5-2 Big East), the Scarlet Knights are heading to a Texas Bowl matchup against Kansas State.

 

Rutgers narrowly missed the Bowl Championship Series by losing Saturday night in triple overtime at West Virginia.

 

Last year, Schiano led Rutgers to its first winning season (7-5) since 1992, and its first bowl berth since 1978.

Pfft, who'd want to stay in New Jersey of all places? Plenty of other people have moved from that area to South Florida, why does Schiano have to be such a non-conformist?

this isnt really shocking and goes along with what he has been saying all year.

randy shannon should NOT be the second choice - he should be the fallback guy after every other conceivable option is explored, because chances are very high that if the job is offered he'll take it

if anyone has a canesport subscription they have a story about paul dee being in n.y. to meet with the new leading candidate(s) that don't seem to be, by their headline, schiano. i'm not asking for the full article to be posted if that makes you uncomfortable for whatever reason, but if anyone with a subscription could just gives the names that would be dandy.

Maybe Leech could finally fix the funk thats been afflicting the UM receiving core ever since Andre Johnson left.

I'm not particularly excited about Randy Shannon. And I don't think Schiano will ever elevate the Rutgers program to perennial title contender, but you never know. Beamer did it in Blacksburg.

 

I hope Miami is looking at other candidates.

During the 2005 game against Texas A&M, Fox Sports Net featured a segment that focused on Leach's odd affinity for pirates.

Under Leach, the Red Raiders have built a strong passing offense. It has won the NCAA passing Title 4 years in a row now. Leach might be more known for plugging new quarterbacks into his spread/pass-oriented offense and having them reel off NCAA records. At Kentucky he turned Tim Couch from a weak-armed recruit into a No.1 NFL Draft Pick. At Oklahoma, Josh Heupel became an NFL draft pick following a year under Leach's tutelege. At Tech, he inserted Kliff Kingsburry for three years, who broke the NCAA records for completions in a career. Following Kingsburry, BJ Symons stepped in producing the most passing yards in a season in NCAA history. Sonny Cumbie jumped up leading the Red Raiders to an upset of nationally ranked California in the Holiday Bowl. Cody Hodges got called to duty, leading the NCAA in passing. Graham Harrell has had a rough time as he had struggled earlier in the season, but improved since the Iowa State game.

 

One of the side effects of Leach's tinkering with the accepted rules of offensive conduct is to upset the ordinary rhythms of a football game. In the five full years Leach has coached Tech, four or five times each season the team has flopped around ineffectually for the first third of a game before racing off to score touchdowns at a rate unheard of in organized tackle football. In 2005, Tech was losing to Kansas State, 13-10, late in the second quarter, and won the game 59-20. In 2004, against TCU, was even odder: TCU, heavily favored, had shut out SMU the week before, 44-0. With 8 minutes left in the second quarter, TCU scored its third touchdown, for a 21-0 lead, and a TCU defensive back was caught mouthing into TV cameras, "They aren't going to score." In the last six minutes of the half, Tech scored three quick touchdowns; after the break, Leach's Red Raiders came out and scored another seven and won the game, 70-35. A few games later, the Texas Tech offense scored the most points Nebraska had ever given up in its 114-year-old history. In that game, Texas Tech had been ahead, 14-3, with 2 minutes left in the first half. They won 70-10. The similar trend happened in the game against Texas A&M in 2005. Tech only led the Aggies by 14-10 at the halftime. The Red Raiders notched up a 56-17 victory. This was the A&M's worst loss against Tech in the 64-year-old series.

Texas Tech is in the Big 12, not the MAC.

 

Also, he got Josh Heupel to throw for 3,850 yards and 33 TDs in 12 games. His offense seems to work just fine.
