Becoming the Centerfielder 'O Meter

I didn't misread anything

The original poster wanted to know how Sanchez stole 2 bases when his OBP was .200 in 5 ABs (1 time on base). She answered that Sanchez was able to reach base one additional time through a fielder's choice, implying that that's how he was able to steal 2 bases. Your answer was not related to the question. You misread.

Time may very well prove me wrong but I still don't think (unless Sanchez goes wild this spring) we've yet seen who will ultimately be playing CF come opening day.

I'm still wondering how Cody Ross had so many memorable performances yet finished last season with such an ugly line... :mischief2

Last year it was obvious the best CF option was the Cody / Alfredo platoon and I think that's the best option we now have. I don't follow ST that closely so I could be wrong about this but it seems to me the Cody / Alfredo option is not even an option. I don't get it.

Despite striking out, Borchard made two great put outs in center today. One while on the run and one a great over the shoulder grab. Pretty damned impressive for someone who hasn't played CF at all.

Were you there?... that's good news

Yep. I was there today. Borchard totally outperformed Sanchez and Abercrombie today, as far as fielding goes. Scott Seabol also had a decent day, from what I saw. I got mad autographs too including Beinfest and former pitcher Alex Fernandez who were both on hand. I had an awesome time and I'm definitely going again to one of the other two Orioles vs Marlins games.

Autographs received:

Alfredo Amezaga

Miguel Cabrera

Josh Willingham

Paul Hoover

Scott Seabol

Reggie Abercrombie

Joe Borchard

Cody Ross

Aaron Boone

Admin Beinfest

Alex Fernandez

Man, I couldn't agree more. He made a statement out there today he has to be in the mix :thumbup

I think his athletic ability is underappreciated here (which is not to say he's any kind of elite MLB player or ever be anything more than average but frankly a .270 BA CFer with 15 Hrs would fill my plate thank you very much).

And how about Jason Wood? He's nobody's slouch out there and somebody ought to take notice... *cough* Aaron Boone *cough*

I asked him before the game when he was signing my baseball when he's going to see some time in center. When he laughed and told me "Today", I was so happy for him. He's hit well this spring up until this point, also. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think he's still above .400. That over-the-shoulder grab amazed me. You'd think he'd been playing center for years.

He definitely deserves to be considered right up there with Sanchez. I think your next table of ratings should see Borchard at the top of the list, without a doubt, Ramp.

Reggie Abercrombie first multi hit game of the spring7ab .429/.429/.429

Joe Borchard finally played some CF today(and apparently looked good), if he gets another chance soon, he could take over the top spot8ab .500/.500/.625

Alex Sanchez 0/1 today 8ab .250/.250/.375 2sb

B.J. Upton with Ricky Nolasco possibly injured, it looks like these guys will be staying in Tampa

Alejandro De Aza welcome to the big board, let's see how far he can climb7ab .429/.429/.429

Eric Reed did not play today5ab .200/.200/.200

Cody Ross Fine 1/3 with a BB day10ab .200/.273/.300

Brett Carroll just not getting the opportunities3ab .667/.667/1.000

I was there, and I'd hardly give Reggie the green arrow. His hits were lame (one was a broken bat infield hit) and he misplayed another flyball. He did have a nice assist, though.

And I agree on Borchard, he had a fine day in CF.

but omg how can that be? he's too big to play CF!

:whistle

I dont want to be down on the performance because I didnt see it...but it's likely he made routine plays look hard. As early as 2002 scouts were saying Borchard didn't have the range for CF and this is 5 years later. Still, im becoming more open to him platooning out there with Ross because I want Reggie playing everyday in AA/AAA, Amezega playing IF, Sanchez as the 5th OF, and De Aza/Reed/Carroll in the minors.

No. On the one where he had to come in, he was on the charge hard. On the one where he had to go out, same thing. He made the catch completely over his shoulder. Like I said, you'd think he's been doing it for years.

Well, he's an excellent athelete. Ive read he doesnt have the range (read: speed I guess?), but maybe he can make up for it with plus instincts. Will be interesting to see if any press comes out about JoBo and CF. Im rooting for him

While I agree that Borchard is capable of playing CF, I don't give some of these scouting reports much credence although it depends.

Like so many other things in life, the devil is in the details. Someone posted something yesterday that turned out to be around six years old. It wasn't done in malice or even stupidity, it was just something that seemed current and wasn't as ESPN often doesn't dateline their stories. Scouting reports are the same way, the fresher (usually) the better.

Borchard (or any player) probably isn't the same player as three years ago. They gain a step from better reads, they lose a step being older, they finally have Lasik instead on contacts, they change their batting stance, the list of variables is endless.

And for the record Borchard's catches yesterday were everything you'd want to see from your centerfielder.
