July 31, 200719 yr Would you call Pablo Honey a great album though? The way I am with Pavement is none of their albums I'd give less than say a 9 on a 10-point scale. No doubt in my mind. No, but I'd say Radiohead has 3 10 stars and 2 9 stars to go along with the 6.5 that is Pablo Honey. Though I can't compare them to Pavement as I've never really listened to them, I'd be willing to give Radiohead the benefit of the doubt on PH because the highs they reached on all of their other albums. I mean, hell Bob Dylan is probably the greatest song writer of all time and he's release a lot of pure sh*t. I think it's more fair to compare an artist's best work rather than his worst, since chances are you aren't going to listen to his worst.
July 31, 200719 yr Author I'm not really making that statement though. I'm just saying for their discography, all of their albums are amazing. I'd put all 5 of their albums in a top 25 of best albums in the 90s without question. All consistent goodness and they even changed their sound and the type of complete album they put out and it still never skipped a beat. Not on the quality of some of those in here but Rufus Wainwright's discog is very very consistent to my ears and all of high quality. I'm a big fan of his.
July 31, 200719 yr Another one is the White Stripes. I don't think they've ever reached the highs of an OK Computer or a YHF, but they don't have a bad album among them.
July 31, 200719 yr Author Agreed. They've gotten better with age at least to me. Jack keeps improving as a guitar player from very good to one of the best alive as well.
July 31, 200719 yr "Thats The Way Of The World" by Earth Wind and Fire This song makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Dudes were oozing with talent when they made this.
July 31, 200719 yr Author Oh man, how could I forget my man Amon Tobin. One of my favorite musicians period and the best electronic music composer going IMHO. His entire discography is money. Pavement-esque if I do say. I mentioned him in either this or the new music thread but no one seemed to care. If you have any interest I'd suggest estarting at the beginning and working your way up or if you only want to try one to start I'd recommend Bricolage or Permutation. Both are phenominal.
July 31, 200719 yr There's just too much Radiohead I don't like, and, for me, YHF trumps anything else Wilco has done--partly because YHF is pretty awesome, and partly because I just don't get that excited about the rest of their output. Nirvana ended before they had a chance to suck. I always thought YHF was head and shoulders above everything else they've done (and it probably still is), but I feel like the rest of their catalogue has at least narrowed the gap and on same days I would say Being There makes for a perfect substitute for YHF. I don't think they've put out a bad album yet. Though, for some reason, I really can't think of even one bad song Jeff Tweedy's been involved with. I don't know what it is, but I pretty much love everything he's done. There's just something there that I cannot explain, and I guess thats what makes me put wilco on the same level as those other bands. As for Radiohead, I pretty much love all of their albums too, even Pablo Honey, which I think gets a lot of crap... I'm not saying Wilco's other albums are bad. I'd give Summerteeth an 8 or even 8.5, but the others are more like 7's for me. But that's just me. And I haven't really liked Radiohead post OK Computer. I know many people consider Kid A to be an amazing, even seminal, album. All I hear is mediocre electronica...I've just never gotten that album, and everything since has left me pretty cold. I agree that artists shouldn't be solely measured by their consistency. One of my top 2 or 3 artists of all time is David Bowie and his stuff is all over the place. The price of experimentation, I guess.
August 3, 200719 yr Does anyone else like the Barenaked Ladies? I don't know what it is about them, but I love their quirky, funny, folk pop. Sometimes I get in these moods when I listen to them a lot. I have a lot of bands that I can't really explain why I like. They stand as huge anomolies in my music catalog, but I love them all the same. Blink 182, New Found Glory, Weezer's last 3 albums, Barenaked Ladies. For some reason, these bands that I liked in middle school have stuck with me. I guess it's part nostalgia, but I think it's also because it's just great no nonsense (or, more accurately, all nonsense) pop music. Also, does anyone else know about The Boy Least Likely To? They are great, and their (only) album, The Best Party Ever, is really great twee pop. Pitchfork has a great review of their first album that really sums up what I love about this album: http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/reco...best-party-ever
August 14, 200719 yr Author I listened to mostly only Bowie and Nick Drake on the flight home yesterday, it was the balls to be perfectly honest.
August 15, 200719 yr Nick Drake is great flight music... I've been listening to a lot of Lucero recently. It's hard to beat sitting on the balcony, drinking a cold beer, and watching the sun set over the Rhodopes with Lucero playing in the background. Any other Lucero fans on the message board?

August 15, 200719 yr Author Nick Drake should definitely be in the discussion about artists with great consistent discogs. He was only alive to make 3 albums but they are all 9 or 10s on a 10 point scale in my view.
August 15, 200719 yr Anyone here into Kitchens of Distinction? They are often cited as being a big influence on Interpol and you can hear the similarities. There most well known track is arguably, "Drive That Fast".
August 15, 200719 yr I listened to them a bit back in the day. Don I'd back up my string of excellent Depeche Mode albums a bit. Some Great Reward - Black Celebration - Music for the Masses - Violator - Songs of Faith & Devotion
August 15, 200719 yr I recently picked up one of those portable passport Maxtor harddrives and have been loading it up with good music to take to work with me. BTW this little thing is excellent for laptops and great for work. Couple of older albums I loaded on that I have been rocking lately: Dire Straits - Brothers in Arms Long Beach Dub All Stars - Right Back Beastie Boys - The In Sound From Way Out Black Moon - War Zone Deltron - 3030 Ice Cube - The Predator LL Cool J - Radio Lords of the Underground - Here Come the Lords
August 15, 200719 yr I listened to them a bit back in the day. Don I'd back up my string of excellent Depeche Mode albums a bit. Some Great Reward - Black Celebration - Music for the Masses - Violator - Songs of Faith & Devotion Man, you are right. What was I thinking? Just a quik glance at Some Great Reward: People Are People Something To Do Lie To Me Master and Servant Blasphemous Rumours (maybe one of their best ever) and Black Celebration: Black Celebration Question of Time Here is the House Stripped (one of my faves) Those 2 releases along with the 3 I mentioned before makes FIVE consistently above average releases over about a 10 year span. How many acts can tout that? HC, would you agree that someone would be hard pressed to find a more consistent string of releases?
August 15, 200719 yr Author HC, would you agree that someone would be hard pressed to find a more consistent string of releases? People already have in this thread. :mischief
August 15, 200719 yr HC, would you agree that someone would be hard pressed to find a more consistent string of releases? Sure I'd agree with you, but then I love Depeche Mode. U2 over a 9 year span put out: War, The Unforgettable Fire, The Joshua Tree, Rattle & Hum, and Achtung Baby. That's pretty solid. but I'm sure we could fill up an entire thread of these.
August 15, 200719 yr I know it's cheating, but the Beatles, in like a 7 year span released like 13 albums and none of them are below a 7, and about 6 of them are pretty much universally regarded as 6 of the 20 best albums of all time. Any discussion of musical consistency begins and ends with them In other news, Illmatic is far and away the best hip hop album of all time. It's crazy that he was 19 when he made that album. It's so ridiculously good.
August 15, 200719 yr Author Far and away? No. C'mon, that's kindof absurd to say one album in an entire genre is far and away better then eveyrthing else ever released. Even my very favorite albums I wouldn't say that about. Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) is better to me for sure.

Even my very favorite albums I wouldn't say that about. Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) is better to me for sure. It's too bad you are completely and entirely wrong. :shifty It's just like, my opinion, man. I'd probably put Paul Boutique as 2nd, and then after that, who knows. Those two are so far above everything else in the genre, imo that it's hard to categorize after them. I have this problem when rating any albums, though. I can always say my top 2 or 3 and then after that, it gets really muddy. For instance, top albums of all time: 1. Beatles- Abbey Road 2. Wilco- Yankee Hotel Foxtrot 3. Clash- London Calling After that, I don't know. Maybe Dylan's Highway 61 or Van Morrison Astral Weeks, or it could be another Beatles album. I can tell you my top and then after that, there's so much else that I can't really say with any certainty.

U2 over a 9 year span put out: War, The Unforgettable Fire, The Joshua Tree, Rattle & Hum, and Achtung Baby. That's pretty solid. but I'm sure we could fill up an entire thread of these. Well for conversations sake, the original discussion was successive releases without a stumble. Rattle and Hum, although not a big stumble, is a stumble nonetheless for the purpose of this conversation. You really can't use the term Rattle and Hum in the same sentence as Joshua or Acthung (see, I just did it and it looks awful ) Therefore, Rattle qualifies as a stumble which breaks the succession. And as far as the Beatles, I don't know their discog well enough to know if they had FIVE successive well above average albums. They are obviously the kings of songwriting (Im not debating that). Would someone please come up with their best FIVE in a row with no stumbles in between? HC, it could also be argued that Ultra was not a stumble either for Mode. Its No Good, Barrel of a Gun, Useless, Sweet Sister.........Obviously Exciter broke the chain. That record was a dog. BTW, ITunes finally got Lennon and I went on a downloading spree. The guy was so sick, Woman, Imagine, Nobody Told Me, Jealous Guy etc..........
