August 15, 200719 yr HC, would you agree that someone would be hard pressed to find a more consistent string of releases? Sure I'd agree with you, but then I love Depeche Mode. U2 over a 9 year span put out: War, The Unforgettable Fire, The Joshua Tree, Rattle & Hum, and Achtung Baby. That's pretty solid. but I'm sure we could fill up an entire thread of these. Well for conversations sake, the original discussion was successive releases without a stumble. Rattle and Hum, although not a big stumble, is a stumble nonetheless for the purpose of this conversation. You really can't use the term Rattle and Hum in the same sentence as Joshua or Acthung (see, I just did it and it looks awful ) Therefore, Rattle qualifies as a stumble which breaks the succession. And as far as the Beatles, I don't know their discog well enough to know if they had FIVE successive well above average albums. They are obviously the kings of songwriting (Im not debating that). Would someone please come up with their best FIVE in a row with no stumbles in between? HC, it could also be argued that Ultra was not a stumble either for Mode. Its No Good, Barrel of a Gun, Useless, Sweet Sister.........Obviously Exciter broke the chain. That record was a dog. BTW, ITunes finally got Lennon and I went on a downloading spree. The guy was so sick, Woman, Imagine, Nobody Told Me, Jealous Guy etc.......... Lennon's solo work was so hit or miss, but when he hit, it was f***ing great. "Mother" is such a great song. Nobody did raw emotion better than him. "Beautiful Boy" breaks my heart everytime I hear it. Especially the bridge... The Beatles: Rubber Soul -> Revolver -> Sgt. Pepper's -> White Album -> Abbey Road -> Let It Be In a row. That's ridiculous. Those are 5 of the 20 greatest albums of all time, and another that's probably top 50 (Let It Be). Not to mention they also released the Magical Mystery Tour EP between Pepper and White Album, which is also a bonafide classic. It's hard to top that, not to mention they had all of their early albums, which while not as good, are some of the greatest pure pop albums ever released. Also, Dylan had a pretty amazing run in the 60's: Another Side of... -> Bringing It All Back Home -> Highway 61 Revisited -> Blonde On Blonde -> John Wesley Harding -> Nashville Skyline He mostly sucked after that, but still, pretty damn great run there. Stones best run: Their Satanic Majesties Request -> Beggars Banquet -> Let It Bleed -> Sticky Fingers -> Exile On Main Street Pretty awesome right there. Also gotta mention this run: The Wild, The Innocent, And The E Street Shuffle -> Born To Run -> Darkness On The Edge Of Town -> The River Nebraska -> Born In The U.S.A. Bruce Springsteen sometimes gets lost, but man he was quite an amazing song writer.

August 15, 200719 yr that's my crappy quoting at work. anyway yeah Rattle & Hum while not a disaster probably doesn't qualify. I didn't care all that much for Zooropa either.
August 15, 200719 yr Author I was thinking Bowie because I've really taken to listening to him like crazy but he does have some sub par releases between greatness. Hunky Dory (Classic) The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars (Classic) Aladdin Sane (Classic) .... Then you have a drop in his next three releases and then he comes back to putting two classic albums in Station to Station and Low. He put out 7 albums in 7 years with 5 of them absolute stellar works. It's pretty impressive considering how much he changed not only sound but different personas as well during that time.

Yeah, I agreed with you last month: I agree that artists shouldn't be solely measured by their consistency. One of my top 2 or 3 artists of all time is David Bowie and his stuff is all over the place. The price of experimentation, I guess. Bowie is absolutely the tits, but sometimes it just didn't work.
August 15, 200719 yr Author I've just been on a Bowie binge lately like crazy for some reason it calmed my nerves a lot the weeks leading up to the wedding. When I can't think of anything I've been putting Ziggy on and just running it all the way through every time. I've been branching out from just Bowie and listening to a bunch of early Iggy Pop that Bowie had a lot of influence on which is fantastic in it's own way (The Idiot and Lust for Life). I think Bowie's best era was his Glam Rock style. J/C, Mabdul's what is your favorite Bowie album?
August 15, 200719 yr I agree that his glam era was his best. As for my favorite of his albums, it's definitely Ziggy, which is probably one of my 3 favorite albums ever. From end to end the quality of that album is astounding--it's like a greatest hits album by a really great artist. Except for Bowie, it's just one album. Favorite Bowie song? For a long time it was Life on Mars? and maybe it still is. But I don't think I could ever get tired of Five Years. Then again, I don't think I'll ever get tired of Magic Dance, either, so...yeah.
August 15, 200719 yr Author I think for song I'd have to go with Starman. Song almost didn't make the final cut of Ziggy either. Amazing.
August 16, 200719 yr My favorite Bowie era is the Niles Rogers produced era of "Lets Dance", "Modern Love" and "China Girl" with Iggy. Still gives me goosebumps.

I'm not the best person to talk about the Beatles, because they are my absolute favorite band, and have been for about 14 of my 19 years on earth. I've seen Paul McCartney live 3 times, and at the last one, I literally had tears in my eyes when he came out. Thats how big of a f***ing Bealtes nut I am. It's actually quite sad. No band impacts me as much, emotionally, as the Beatles (and their various side projects and solo work). Songs like "Beautiful Boy", "For No One", "Here Today", and "The Long and Winding Road" really hit me. It's crazy that they had 3 legitimately great songwriters in that band. For my money, George might have written the best album any of them ever made (All Things Must Pass).
August 29, 200718 yr Author So when the Sox play the Yankees and I get the YES feed on EI, I always play a random great album the whole game instead of listening to the commentary that makes me want to commit brutal crimes against humanity. Tonight I played The Smith's The Queen Is Dead. It's been a while since I listened to that all the way through. What an absolutely brilliant album. I really shouldn't have neglected it for so long. If you've made the same mistake as me, dust it off or fire up your hard drive and play that bad boy.
August 30, 200718 yr While we're talking about "old" music... anyone here visit Steve Hoffman's Music Forums? Hoffman is an acclaimed audio engineer, famous for the highly-regarded DCC audio compact discs that sell like hotcakes on eBay. He started a message board a while back to discuss audio fidelity issues -- such as the infamous "Loudness Wars" -- and pretty soon it became THE place to go to talk about music (old and new), the recording industry and audio technology. I've found myself checking out the site quite often lately; it's a fascinating place. Anyway, just a heads up; I'm guessing some of you might be interested. Cheers.
August 31, 200718 yr awesome, thanks Beetle. & where've ya been hiding man? Miss ya around here. "We need you. Hell, I need you. I'm a mess without you. I miss you so damn much. I miss being with you, I miss being near you. I miss your laugh. I miss your scent; I miss your musk. When this all gets sorted out, I think you and me should get an apartment together."

September 2, 200718 yr Author I've got Sonic Youth's Goo rotating right now. I can't get in to any other Sonic Youth album but I think Goo is fantastic. Kim Gordon's voice is one of my favorites.

September 6, 200718 yr I'm listening to Bouncing Souls "Gold Album" right now. One of the underappreciated punk bands because god forbid they didn't play CBGB's in the 70's
