olivo > treanor as a total package

would be interesting to see Baker up at some point though. I think he could be our best option right now.

While Olivo is a much better hitter, Treanor is a much better defensive catcher, so IMO at least their stregnths cancel eachother out.

yeah I did lolz

I do. No one is saying make Treanor the full time starter, but he should be playing more than he is, I dont think thats debatable.

I think Treanor is horrible. Maybe the worst backup in the league. So I disagree. The ball catching sucks, but it's less of a factor than it's made out to be

I guess feces>cyanide but I would like to avoid both.

Last time I looked Baker was tearing up the PCL. Anyone know his option status? Looks like he has zero MLB time. The problem is DLing Olivo for any period of time. Can't carry three catchers with the bench this short.

that may be...you still take the lesser of 2 evils the majority of the time

Our local sports coverage is pathetic and incompetent. I just tuned into local Channel 12 sports to catch some highlights, and they didn't show the Cabrera walk-off!

At home, you go for the win and the closer (Owens) would throw in the 9th in a game that is tied or if the fish had the lead. Julio warmed up due to the fact in case Nomar's at bat came up, he would pitch to the righty and not have Pinto face the right handed hitting Nomar!

In away games, the closer will only throw in the bottom of the 9th with a lead or in a later inning like if the fish go up in the 10th or 11th and etc.

Well regardless, they'll try Julio back in the closer's role eventually. I didn't want him either, but they've got him, they're paying him a fair amount of money, and they want to get their money's worth.

from Berardino's blog:

Jorge Julio was so impressive in his two-inning return Monday night, at least in the eyes of Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez, that he could yet reclaim the job.

"What we saw [Monday] was outstanding," Gonzalez said Tuesday afternoon. "That fastball had some electric momevent on it. It had some zip, it had life. Breaking ball was good. We?ll keep building on that."

While Julio will likely be limited to mop-up duties for now, Fredi made it sound like it might not be long before he's popped back into the bubbling vat of hot oil that is the ninth inning.

"Our plan is for him to be the closer," Gonzalez said. "That?s [what] we got him to be. Our plan is to do that. There?s no time schedule for that. We?ll keep running him out there."

Owens? Gonzalez called him "the guy we've been closing with" but stopped short of anything resembling an endorsement.

"Hopefully we get Julio to that position where he?s got some expeirnece doing it," Gonzalez said. "We don?t know how long that?s going to take. You?d like to put the hand on the forehead and say, 'Do it,' but it doesn?t work that way."

All we can really hope for now is that he gets his stuff together and that they build him up for a while before throwing him in a save situation again. Last outing looked great but that was one outing, let's not get nuts yet Freddi.

Sadly, over the last 4 years...Julio at his absolute best has no business closing games.

Unless Owens blows like 3 in a row or something to that effect, leave him there. After Owens, try some others out, i.e. Gardner. Julio shouldnt be the first option after Owens and Owens SHOULD NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE have a short leash because of Julio's presence.

IMO, Lindstrom should get strong consideration. He has the stuff to be successful at the end of the games

Defense is not as important as offense, especially not when you are trading defense for a black hole in the lineup.

I don't like it, I don't like it, I don't like it. Why would you announce plans to put him back in the closer's role? Sure, he had one successful outing, but what if it doesn't go so well down the road? Not to mention you're undercutting your current closer.

If Julio continued to be lights out, I wouldn't have a problem with him in the closer's role. I just don't like the way Fredi went about it here.
