I remember a certain Josh Beckett who had this same type of temper.

If I were on the Phillies, and Olsen said what he did--that he hates the Phillies because they dominate the Marlins--that would put a smile on my face. I'd feel a sense of pride...not anger. I don't know why Phillies players were angered by those comments.

Nothing wrong with hating the Phillies. I think more Marlin players should join in on the hate, especially towards Chase Utley.

His attitude towards everything goes far past just our rivals. If this were the Blue Jays, I bet he would have done the same thing.

Win or lose I love his attitude. As long as it's not directed to the fans ala AJ then I'm cool with it. The fact is even if we lost last nights game he kept us in the game for 6+ giving up only 3 runs and striking out 6. So his attitude had no direct effect on his performance as he managed to get out of the inning after the Utley walk. The problem is alot of people on here would have blamed that outburst as the cause for the loss. I'll take 3 runs anyday from any of our starters.

Yeah but you have a mancrush on AJ the size of Florida. IF he was such a big man he would have hit him and put his team in more trouble. Instead he regained his cool and got them out of the inning. Perhaps that is biggest difference here. He didn't let his "ego" get in the way of getting his team out of the inning. He really could have let that inning get out of control.

I've always had an affinity for Olsen and his attitude... I love it. He pitched well and deserved a win yesterday. He struggled early, but he has had 6 straight quality starts and not allowed more than 3 ER in any outing. In that stretch his K/BB ratio has improved greatly to 30/12.

 

I just don't get it... in any other sport, someone gets fired up at an opponet and it's considered competitiveness or 'the will to win.' Baseball is just full of archaic ideas, and Scotty O. defies that, and I love what he brings to games.

 

He's always been good to the organization, and to the fans, unlike past emotional hurlers (AJ), he fires himself up against his opponet, and I wish more guys were willing to carry that same intensity.

If you ever watch batting practice, towards the tail-end of the home-team's session when the visitors start to come out, you see a bunch of buddy buddy conversations, among players of all statures.

 

I'm not saying there aren't some players who don't respect the uniform (like Rivera saying he could never play for the Red Sox), but by and large, rivalries and hatred are limited mostly to the stands.

Gotta agree. And I am not yet a Scotty fan. IMO if this were last year that 6th inning probably would have turned into alot more runs because he wouldn't have been able to keep his emotions in check, if he had kept his emotons in check that long. Same could be said for his first couple starts this year. He's growing up before our eyes. If he keeps this up he could become a real presence on this team.

If you want to blame someone for the late called time outs look no further than the ump. It's his discretion to call it or not. A pitcher starts his wind up, a hitter steps out of the box and asks for a time out, the ump dosen't allow it, the player looks like a total idiot standing outside the box as a strike goes through, and it dosen't happen again. A pitcher has to go through with the pitch either by throwing it to the back stop, like in the 2nd inning, or throwing it for a strike, like the 6th inning, or he risks the possibility of getting injured trying to stop. It's as much (if not more) the umps job to protect the players from injury, including the pitcher, as it is to give that hitter some slack. You guys were screaming at Utley. I was screaming at the ump.

Some people just don't realize how often a player calls for time exactly like Utley did and is not awarded time. And rightfully so. The ump should not have awarded time and Olsen was told so when the ump went to the mound with Kranitz after Olsen's tantrum.

 

To say Utley "was being a bitch" is simple minded. Obviously, it got to Olsen's head the first time and there was nothing wrong with Chase doing it again.

This rivalry has just jumped up a notch.

Bull. Hate is too big a word but I never did like AJ for various reasons, and not one of them was his attendance remarks. He was/is an egomaniac. He would not listen to his coaches or catcher. He always thought he could either just throw his fastball past everyone or out think everyone, all on his own. He was usually the "unnamed clubhouse source" whenever something negative was said about the team, coaches, and/or front office. He was a cancer on this team that wasted away opportunities to become a real pitcher simply because he thought he already knew more than anyone else. That is why he was never better than a .500 thrower. Probably why he was injured during the '03 season. And why he was thrown off the team before his last season here was over. It wasn't until that happened that others started to see what AJ really was and turned against him. Until then, almost every fan had a love relationship with him because of his possibilities and his no-no in San Diego. There weren't many of us that saw him for what he actually was/is and believe me, I took alot of heat every time I would say negative things about him and his attitude/style.

I am becoming a Scotty fan. One reason is because he is the anti-AJ. He is learning how to be a pitcher. He is learning to control his temper. He is actively seeking out advice and incorporating it into his game and off day routines. His last few starts have shown this and if he continues down this road I will proudly buy a #34 jersey and wear it with a smug grin because he is learning to be a team player that plays with heart and wants what is best for the team and screw the stats. Kinda like Josh Becket in his final couple years here. You want to compare Scotty with someone that would be the person. To compare, or even mention him with AJ in the same sentence, is an insult to Scotty and the entire coaching staff and team.
