Posted May 27, 200717 yr Seriously, we need to call up one of our actual prospects and just cut him already. 4.0 IP, 8 H, 7 ER, 3 BB, 1K, 2 HRs
May 27, 200717 yr If Wessy O gets sent down to AAA or the pen we will have to find someone to fill his spot in the rotation. We have 12 games in 11 days until we have an off day (Double header on the 5th). So I don't know what we will do.
May 27, 200717 yr Vanden Hurk is doing well in double A right now, and I love his stuff, but I think he needs to just develop in Double A for the rest of the year. I mean, the guy has never had a full season of development in the minors. He will be a fixture in this rotation for years to come, I don't want to rush him anymore then we already have.
May 27, 200717 yr Author He will be a fixture in this rotation for years to come I'm not sure about that. He's already getting old compared to our other prospects.

May 27, 200717 yr You can't fault him for one start, he had been decent in every appearence before this. He's facing the best offense in the NL and had an off-night. He's currently our #5 guy with 3 starters injured...you shouldn't expect something amazing out of him. None of our pitchers in AA are ready to start now. The only starting pitcher even doing remotely well in AAA is Paul Mildren (4.36 ERA, 1.29 WHIP, .226 BAA) who has almost as many walks as he does strikeouts. The only other pitcher you could start in our bullpen, is our closer.
May 27, 200717 yr Sad to say....but with all the injuries we may have no choice but to give another start to a horrible looking Obermuller. One can only hope and pray that he has 1 somewhat MLB looking start in his near future. Not a terribly encouraging situation. Let's hope JJ is back in the next 2-3 weeks.
May 27, 200717 yr Fredi Gonzalez needs to take some of the blame Obermueller should have yanked before he gave up the bomb to delgado
May 27, 200717 yr To be fair, Obermueller was facing the best offense in the league. The Mets have put a lot of runs on better pitchers than Wes this year.
May 27, 200717 yr Dontrelle, JJ, Sanchez, Olsen, Nolasco. When ony two of those guys are healthy, this sh*t happens. I realize the frustration that Freddi seems enamored with him, but whatever...I think most of us have realized he just doesn't make a whole lot of sense most of the time. As for the notion of calling up a prospect...who? Gaby and Volstad are both struggling. Garcia and West are hurt and Petit's in Arizona.
May 27, 200717 yr Off night for Obermueller, he's definetly not a guy who should be expected to do good though. I was hoping decent but Delgado rocked him. I agree with Irish that he should have been yanked before Delgado hit his 2nd bomb.
May 27, 200717 yr Give me a break. After the team wastes quality start after quality start from Mitre, I'm certainly not going to put too much of our problems on Obermueller. Giving up 7 runs is horrible, I know. But what about our offense scoring what? 2 runs a game the last 2 nights? If you feel like you need to pitch a shutout to win and your not that good, I don't think great things are to be expected. Maybe he would've still blown it if he had some run support, but I think any pitcher would be less inclined to just fold that way when they are not up against a wall like that.
May 27, 200717 yr One bad start and you're ready to kill him? We have no other real options so far, and Obermueller has only had real bad start.
May 27, 200717 yr One bad start and you're ready to kill him? We have no other real options so far, and Obermueller has only had real bad start. Still, he was never really a quality starting arm. Bullpen? Yes. Starter? No.

You are right tho, he is in Arizona. Tucson, Arizona. Where he has a 5.74 ERA, averaging about 5 innings a start and has walked 21 compared to 22 Ks. So I guess you think he could start for us with those numbers. Compared to some of our guys his walk totals are right in line. Obie has had consecutive bad starts. I like him alot better in long relief. But we just don't have anyone else right now that is ready. The Dutchboy is an option but I wopuld much rather see him mature a bit more in the minors rather than damaging his confidence pitching here.

What am I missing about him that some people love? I have watched him pitch and he is not any better than Wes Obermueller. I know that the Julio trade ended up being a disaster, but it was not because we lost Petit. If he was still here, we'd being havig a "Petit is NOT a MLB starting pitcher" thread right now. The truth is that neither guy should be starting in the Majors, but until we start getting some of our DLed pitchers back, we'll have to live with Obermueller for a few more starts.

He can walk guys with the best of them. Yea, bring Petit back. And while we are at it let's continue with the less than mediocrity and bring back Abraham Nunez. He's wasting all those errors and poor plate performances down in AAA for the Nats. After all, we are going for some records here. Most walks and most errors in baseball. Let's not waste the effort.
May 27, 200717 yr Sometimes you need to look at game logs when judging players in the PCL and while I realize a 4.17era is nothing special, that is what his era is when you remove his back to back starts where he was shelled. In his last 3 starts, he has a 3.68era and while his walks are up, his hits are way down. He isn't even allowing a hit an inning. Opposing hitters are batting .244 against him. But even so, the reason why you can't give up on this guy yet is....... HE'S 22 YEARS OLD. Some of you need to slow down and think for a second. Not every pitcher is going to be a DTrain or a Kazmir or whatever right out of the minor leagues. Sometimes there needs to be an adjustment period. And for the record, Petit had 1 spot start this year in the bigs, and he went 7ip 4h 2r(2er) 0bb 5k .167baa

And for the record, Petit had 1 spot start this year in the bigs, and he went 7ip 4h 2r(2er) 0bb 5k .167baa I appreciate the fact that he is 22 years old and still may need time to develop. But what I am judging my opinion on is that after watching him pitch, his stuff isn't good enough to be anything more than a #5/AAAA starter. There just isn't much of a track record for success for guys who throw under 90 mph, with an average at best breaking pitch and struggles with command. To me, Petit is Obermueller. An occasional starter/long relief pitcher. Maybe he develops into something more, I just don't see it. As for Petit's one start this year, its such a small sample size, you can't judge anything based on that. Obermueller has had some decent starts this year as well, but that still doesn't mean I want him in my rotation.
