Well, with all due respect, I don't think it's a fair question that you're asking. It's actually a layered set of unrelated questions.

Well, that's not entirely true. Much like we see with Pinto, and will likely see with Obermueller, the waiver threat put Mitre on our roster more than any other factor could have. Mitre was out of options and would not make it to Albuquerque if we tried to send him there. If we were perfectly healthy coming out of the gate, Mitre's roster spot probably would have been at the expense of either Lindstrom or Gardner and considering one's in AAA now and the other is mysteriously under-utilized, I can't really say that there's any realistic scenario that makes us bemoan Mitre's presence out of the gate.

 

The second about expecting Mitre to continue like he has?

 

Well, that's a loaded question too. Mitre allows runs. Mitre, depending on your point of view, has either been incredibly lucky or unlucky that the runs were earned. Has Mitre pitched better than his 2-2 record? Absolutely, but he hasn't pitched like a 8 or 9 win pitcher either. I expect Mitre's games to be more or less what we see now, get 4 runs and you're going to win more than half the time, but I don't see that ERA staying below 2, or 3 for that matter once August rolls around.

 

Finally, about Vandy outpitching Mitre for the remainder of the season.

 

Seems incredibly doubtful to me when you figure that upon JJ's return, Vandy will be the first to go, and even if he survives that, there's still Nolasco and Sanchez to go. Basically, Mitre had an opportunity to fill in as an injury replacement rotation guy and he took his chance and ran with it. Vandy, as was to be expected, showed flashes of why the Marlins thought his stuff was ready, but he struggled in the "pitching" aspect of the game in all but one start.

 

Now, if tomorrow he throws another 7 brilliant innings this discussion may have credibility, but until then it's just a lot of puffing. In Mitre's worst start this year, he's allowed 4 earned runs. (Yes, I know the immediate response is that he's allowed half his runs as unearned runs, but just let it go for a second and look at his game logs)...there's only one outing when 4 runs would not have been good for no worse than a tie.

 

Also, just to put in all into focus, Vandy has allowed as many runs (both earned and unearned) in 18 innings as Mitre has in 56.

 

That should put it all to bed.

Nothing at all wrong with this move.. play it safe with the best and most consistent starter on the team.. and give a guy who looked OUTSTANING another chance. A strong showing from RVH tomorow makes Hawkeye Wes very very nervous.

 

Its obvious RVH has much more upside then Wes (duh statement of the decade).. if he can just go out there and keep us in it, his spot on this team looks more prolonged then he certainly envisioned, and most of us, at the beginning of the year.

The fact that the team had him as the #2 starter on opening day last season tells me that they expected good things out of him. And, thus far in his career as a Marlin, he's been above average.

 

It's amazing how enamored people get on this board with guys with a fastball and a nice curve. Nolasco's got one of the sickest change ups I've ever seen, but he can't get it over the plate consistently. Thus far in his career (in a miniscule sample size), Rick Vanden Hurk has the same problem. People don't seem to understand that anything can happen in a small sample size of one start, or that their eyes can infact decieve them. Just because a guy looks like he has a great curveball and he no hits a team through 6 innings doesn't mean he's going to be a great pitcher. He very well may be, but there's no garauntees, and at this point, Mitre is much more of a sure thing than RVH.

Guess this was in response to my post, so yes he did. He also got shelled by the same team the start before that and by the Mets. He's a rookie that probably wouldn't even have a shot at the Majors this year except for the injury bug completely dismatling our SPs. I have nothing against the guy, I think he will become a fine addition to our team. In the future. He is still a rookie and he is still inconsistent. And still here, unlike the rumor that got started said after that outstanding last start.

Mitre might be the best starting pitcher in the NL right now, although he doesn't have enough IP to really drive this comment home (so its my personal opinion). He is unstoppable right now. 23 1/3 innings without a run, era below 1.70, like... 8 walks i believe, its just ridiculous the kind of year Mitre is having.

 

I like Mitre. Alot. But I wouldn't go so far as to say that. He has a solid shot to make the AS team tho despite his win/loss record.

Like your train of thought, just not so sure I agree with it. Even if RVH has a good showing on Sunday. I'm not real thrilled with him working out of the pen. I would rather he go back down and continue working on his stuff every 5 days. No way I can defend that dismal outing Obie had on Saturday. But he is projected to be a long relief guy and RVH is projected to be a starter. RVH will continue to get spot starts here. So if THAT is the option then I would hope your Hawkeye is safe for the time being.

Wow... you must of been on something writing the same thing over and over. Why are u defending a comment like his anyway?.. you knew it was way out of line. How can u say that RVH is better than Mitre?.. just by experience alone you cant even possibly make a remark like this.

People can have their own opinions. However when you say a guy, who a few days ago had an era of 12.75, is better than a guy who's era is 1.7 you have to expect that people are going to think you are crazy.

RVH has started 5 games (including todays devil rays game) and has an era of 9. Mitre has started 10 games and has an era of 1.59, only Dan Haren at 1.58 has a better era in the entire league.
