Notes: Marlins try to preserve Mitre

By Joe Frisaro / MLB.com

MIAMI -- Sergio Mitre arguably is the Marlins' hardest-working player. He arrives early and undergoes exhaustive conditioning drills. But the sore right hamstring that has plagued the right-hander since May 30 has caused the club to pull the reins back a bit on Mitre.

Initially slated to start on Sunday in the series finale with Tampa Bay, Mitre now is in line to make his next start on June 15 at Kansas City.

"We're going to bump him back," manager Fredi Gonzalez said on Friday.

Rick Vanden Hurk will replace Mitre in the rotation on Sunday against the Devil Rays. The 22-year-old collected his first Major League win in his previous start, holding the Braves hitless through six innings before having his no-hit bid end in the seventh at Turner Field on Tuesday.

As for Mitre, he says it's "the same old, same old."

Again on Friday, Mitre was doing everything possible to get ready to pitch. He was in the weight room working out, and doing cardio conditioning.

Mitre threw five shutout innings at Atlanta in a no-decision on Tuesday, and his streak of not allowing an earned run is at 23 2/3 innings.

Wes Obermueller now is sliding into a long-relief role, and the right-hander will be available on Saturday. Obermueller started on three days' rest and beat the Braves on Monday.

had no idea Mitre was such a hard worker...hopefully RVH can make some more magic. He certainly has the stuff...

I believe Vanden Hurk is an upgrade over Mitre as well as Mitre has been pitching. RVH is just nasty

huh...22.1 scorless innings in a row. How could you possibly say something that dumb

Reminds me of those ESPN commercials, were the guy is talking sports out of his ass. Then he watches espn news, and well yeaa...

Dumbest. Post. Ever.

Smart move, considering how well the Hurk has pitched. Gotta play it safe whenever you can

It's surprising that Mitre is such a workout fiend, because my only knock against him is that he seems a little soft.

You all are being pretty rough on Eddie just because he has a different opinion than yours. Especially seeing there were only a couple of us on here that had anything at all good to say about Mitre before the season started. The guy has a right to his opinion without all the name calling and character bashing. I am quite sure I could go back and find some pretty moronic and/or hypocritical statements you all have made just over the past few weeks and bash you the same way as well.

Anyways... I don't agree. We watched Sergio during ST and liked what we saw. he was still working on some things but he had some nasty stuff that was evident was going to work some magic during the season if he had a defense behind him that would play like they wanted to be out there. He adjusts to the adjustments and dosen't let things get to him. RVH may have some quality stuff but I never look very hard at what a rookie does until he has been through the opposition a couple of times in different games. It's one reason why I never like to see a pitcher get that ROY award. Right behind I think that award should go to a position player. And yes, I felt the same way when DTrain won it.

Well RVH no hit the Braves through 6 his 3rd time seeing them.

you mean talking out of his ignorance. :)

lol awesome stuff

lmao hes just kidding guys......... right?

Mitre might be the best starting pitcher in the NL right now, although he doesn't have enough IP to really drive this comment home (so its my personal opinion). He is unstoppable right now. 23 1/3 innings without a run, era below 1.70, like... 8 walks i believe, its just ridiculous the kind of year Mitre is having.

The guy should have at least 5 wins already.....it's sad the lack of run support he gets and the bad luck with injury.

Thats what i always tell every1.. Mitre is 1 unlucky SOB. He should AT LEAST be at 5-2 the way hes been pitching.

Why should Eddie have to defend his position?

To all the people calling him stupid, I bet at least half of you didnt even want Mitre on the team this year. You all assume Mitre will keep up his torrid pace, which wont happen. He will have more than a few games where he gets destroyed.

In his best days as a farm hand he was profiled as a 5th starter at best in the league. Its great that he is pitching better, but to expect him to continue is lunacy. Hell, if JJ hadnt got hurt Mitre wouldnt even be with the club.

Cut the guy some slack. Its might not happen but it is very possible that Vanden Hurk out performs Mitre as the year continues.

Dang people, I know you jumped on the Mitre bandwagon but that doesnt give you the right to blindside a poster here because your out of the blue new favorite pitcher is pitching way over his head.

yea... no.

Spike, if nothing, you're incredibly consistent. But 7 or so "over his head" outings is a lot better of an indicator than 7 "over his head" innings.

FWIW, I'm not terribly sold on EITHER having a long-term impact on our team, but again, that's just my opinion.

That wasnt really a Mitre bash on my part as much as it was me being pissed off that the majority of this thread was spent calling someone stupid.

That is uncalled for and this board is generally better than that.
