June 27, 200719 yr Fan voting is a joke. . . I haven't voted for anyone in the last 2-3 years And there it is. What gets me every year, without fail, is how early fan voting begins. And that we're restricted, basically, to the opening day lineup. De Aza has been injured since when? Yet he's still on the NL Ballot? Fan voting is ridiculous, and year after year we're reminded of that when the best player at a position is sitting on the bench, or perhaps his couch, because he's not a Yankees, Mets, Red Sox or other big-team player. Never really understood why MLB had to go and make the All-star game a popularity contest rather than a reward for the talented --- AND THEN go and put so much at stake in the game with World Series Home Field Advantage. I say put the best statistical player at each position as the starter and let fan voting assist in (but not absolutely) determining the back-ups. And lets go back to the best record gets home field. That's my 2 cents - or 5... Go Marlins! "Going back" means it just alternates each year between NL/AL, no best record.
June 27, 200719 yr I'm ok with ANYONE insulting Marlin fans - atleast when it comes to attendance. It's not like we don't have it coming and it's not like it can be avoided, so give me your best shot, ESPN. What do I care? I'm used to it. Everyone else should be too.

In any case - the team with the better win % should have home-field advantage.
June 27, 200719 yr Fan voting is a joke. . . I haven't voted for anyone in the last 2-3 years And there it is. Care to explain?
June 27, 200719 yr Doesn't insult me, because it's true. you aren't smart enough to know how to vote? I know that's not the case. And that's what the ESPN commentator is impliying (both a racist and insulting IMO). And we should all take the insult because fans suck down here?
June 27, 200719 yr Fan voting is a joke. . . I haven't voted for anyone in the last 2-3 years And there it is. I haven't voted in 2 years either. I really could careless about the all star game or who is starting. In fact I dont recall watching a complete all star game from start to finish in any sport.

I cant be positive about what he meant, but I think I can take a good guess. You say fan voting is a joke and quite often it proves thats right. But you cant change the way its done. What you could try to change is who is voted in as a starter by doing your part and voting. So by not voting for the last 2-3 years, no matter how dumb the other fans or the idea of fan voting, youre only adding the problem and allowing the All Star starters to be all Yankees, Red Sox, Cardinals and Mets....

Well, apparently the guy said they dont know they CAN vote, not that they dont know how to vote. Either way, South Florida hasnt exactly proved in the past that they know how to punch ballots correctly. I just dont care because I dont watch most of what ESPN has to offer now because its horrible, this guy was trying to be clever/funny, as they always do now rather than giving the viewers sports news.

I have better things to do with my time than vote 100 times for Miguel Cabrera. It is not my duty to fix any systems. They want me to participate, then put a damn system in place that is worth something.
June 27, 200719 yr I dont disagree that you have better things to do or that the system they have in place isnt crap. Just saying that it isnt going to change anytime soon and assuming thats what Swift may have meant.

Yeah, more or less that. Whatever fans do, as a whole, is indicative of the fan-base. Because people choose to not vote it generally leads to this cycle. If every Marlin fan who went to a game this season voted once each time they were there (since each person entering the gate gets a ballot) just that smallest bit of effort would eventually be rewarded with the national exposure so many clamor for yet most ignore. I figure we get 11,000 asses in a seat on average in Miami who are Marlins fans. I figure 3,000 of them vote and maybe 300 of them stuff the boxes. If those extra 8,000 votes happen each game, over the course of a homestand, that's anywhere from 48,000-100,000 votes that wouldn't have happened...MORE than enough to get Miggy the starting job. That's all I'm saying, I know that they're out there, and you just raised your hand and came forward. I'm tremendously excited you go to games, support the Marlins, watch them on TV, but how about doing something really really simple and help them get some national credibility, since I assume you care about that sort of thing...
June 27, 200719 yr I didn't realize anyone over the age of 12 voted in these ballots. And our fanbase deserves zero credibility or praise because it really is the most indifferent one in the majors. Without a doubt.
June 28, 200719 yr Atleast dusty baker corrected him. The marlins wont win any ballots unless they start selling the place out. Hopefully if/when they get one crowds may start coming around. You can vote online, and last year about 80% of all votes came from online voting. Its not stadiums that make All-Stars anymore but the good ol' internet.
June 28, 200719 yr The thing that fires me up the most is the fact that many of the people that go to the games aren't Marlins' fans. They are win they are winning, otherwise they're rooting for the other team and that gets me mad. I hate hearing the tomohawk chop in our house! :hat Its always going to be that way here. Lets face it, no one wants to live in South Fla anymore. I only live here because I have too because of a family business. I am stuck so to speak. You go to places like Atlanta, Phoenix or San Diego its like a different country. I was born and raised in Miami, but my brother & I are the last members of our family still living here. Aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, co-workers, school friends all have moved away. My graduating class at Coral Park in 1978 had 856 students. At our 25th reunion only 150 -- give or take a few live in Miami & Ft Lauderdale. Only 24 had died. Believe it or not about 100+ live in Atlanta alone, not to mention the 100+ that live in Orlando. Another problem, forwhatever reason, the Cuban community just has never supported the Marlins. I don't know why, but their continued failure to come to games is mystifying. Before we had the Marlins all my Cuban friends used to lament we didn't have a team -- and if Miami had a team it would be a sellout every night. Well what happened ?????? They have no excuse. That is why I for one, don't think a new stadium in downtown Miami, or even at the Orange Bowl site would be a success past the 2 seasons of new stadium draw, that happens for every new stadium. In that 3rd year is when attendance usually starts falling for new stadiums -- here in Miami I doubt it would take that long. Boy am I depressed tonight :banghead

I really could careless about the all star game or who is starting. In fact I dont recall watching a complete all star game from start to finish in any sport. I'm with you guys. But it's been more than 2 years. The AS game is a joke. Has been for many years. The all around best players are at home while the heavy bats are at the game with their gloves that have holes in them. I don't watch the game. I may watch some of the festivities surrounding the game, but that's it. I could care in the least who is in the game or what team they come from. I have ideas on how to change this but they will never be implemented. So now I have 3 days in July with no baseball and time to catch up on chores arund the house.

Without a doubt. You have forgotten about the Tampa fan base Tampa has absolute no reason to care about the D-Rays, we actually have a modicum of tradition having 2 WS wins.

That's all I'm saying, I know that they're out there, and you just raised your hand and came forward. I disagree. Main reason is: You seem to think that just because they are Marlins fans they are going to cruise through the ballots punching out Marlins players. Here's a clue. You don't want me voting if you think I am going to vote for Marlins players just because I am a fan of this team. That would make me as much of a hypocrit as the ballot stuffers. I would be voting for the best all around player at each position. And this year the Marlins don't have one that qualifies, IMO.
