From What ive seen, looks like its time to give Matt his big break

Well Matt can't hit his way out of a paper bag but at this point, I can't take the dropped Olivo balls anymore.

 

Its just gotten out of hand. Its almost like there is a hole in the web of his glove. I sit there and shake my head at the TV and want to vomit.

at this point treanor can definitely hit his way out of a paper bag, he is now hitting in the .290s and is vastly superior in the field to olivo, who has been worse than garbage unless he's facing bob wickman

 

most of all, olivo continues to be a catcher who simply cannot catch, it seems like he has passed balls/misplays every game, treanor deserves a chance after tonight, he can't be much worse

It's at the point where offense can't/shouldn't even enter the discussion. Olivo's probably costing us 3-4 runs a week with his glove.

at what point is enough enough? you build your team around pitiching and defense. olivo can't defend and does not help his pitchers out at all.

I agree Olivo was terrible last night, but Dontrelle's wildness certainly didn't help. He was crossed up on quite a few occasions.

Catcher position is overrated. Pitching coach almost always calls the pitches.

 

A great catcher (in terms of catch and throw) makes a good pitching staff really good since he can shut down the running game, pick runners off, not allow balls to get to the backstop, etc.

 

However, benching Olivo isn't going to make our pitching improve, just our defense. What I mean is Dontrelle won't magically turn into a 20 game winner again, but rather we'll just win most of the games in which we score 10 runs.

With all the talk of Dontrelle....numbers with catchers...

Fact remains that, not just with Dontrelle, everyone's numbers are up compared to their norm with Olivo behind the plate.

 

So no, I don't believe that a catcher doesn't have an impact on how well a pitcher produces.

Their norm? None of these pitchers has pitched to anybody but Olivo. Trelle is the only starter we have (aside from Kim, who Olivo doesn't catch) that had a significant number of non-Olivo innings, and many of them were in his ridiculous (and probably flukey) 2005, so his numbers are skewed. Take out what he did in 05 and his numbers with and without Olivo probably look similar.

Treanor is definitely more liked as a reciever by several members of the staff. If only he could hit as well as some of the pitchers, he might get more action.

Still a HUGE difference between the two, actually. His 2005 numbers don't have that big impact on his career numbers, it was only 223 innings.

 

And it's not like Olivo is a sole proprietor.

A sample size that big certainly makes you have to think Treanor, Lod Duca, and Pudge made a difference. Treanor has had some great catchers to learn from, and he is obviously very good. I torn on this, because I don't want to give Matt a chance, have him fail miserably offensively, and have it cost us. But at the same time... that man deserves it.

Treanor should at LEAST be catching lefties full time.
