Gore and his guests at the weekend ceremony dined on Chilean sea bass - arguably one of the world's most threatened fish species.

 

Also known as Patagonian toothfish, the species is under pressure from illegal, unregulated and unreported fishing activities in the Southern Ocean, jeopardising the sustainability of remaining stocks.

 

The species is currently managed by the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Living Marine Resources, the body which introduced a catch and trade documentation scheme as an attempt to tackle illegal poaching of this species.

Chilean Sea Bass is NOT an endangered species and is NOT illegal to catch up to a certain limit.

Is someone stalking Al Gore or something? The guy's not even running for President.

 

It probably wasn't even actual Chilean Sea Bass...there have been many stories about how when someone says that they have that fish, it's usually a similar species that is easier to find.

 

These stories about John Edwards' haircut bill, Al Gore's supposedly high electric bill, and now this, are getting old. It also seems really biased against only Democrats.

I still do not see buying wextremely expensive fish from half-way across the world is so eco-friendly or why everyone else in the world but the rich will have to sacrifice on the altar of global warming.

It doesn't matter what your take on the issue is, I agree with you on the issue but that means nothing in terms of Vitter's case/

 

As for the it's semi protected status, their's a fishery off south georgia that is highly sustainable and provides much of the sea bass in the United States.

The fish is being threatened because it is illegally fished outsied the bounds of the regulated market, not because it is fished at all or because it is eaten by people. It is near danger because of the black market. Maybe Gore bought it from the legal market, which follows the requirments to maintain sustainability?

 

This stretch of logic is the equivilant of saying a person who is opposed to sweatshops can't wear clothes or else they are a hypocrite.

 

I love how this becomes a defense for David Vitter too. Your tactic is to muddy up the waters and say everyone is a hypocrite so it's no big deal. Parsing out the facts is getting to the bottom of an issue, not working with broad statements.

what i meant by ESPECIALLY was in terms of the attention your going to get, cheating is cheating. its wrong. but if your George Bush and you cheat on Laura and its discovered your going to get a lot more hell for it from the media than if your Bill Clinton cheating on Hillary. Bush is a social conservative talking about how important marriage is while Bill is... well Bill.
