Did anyone else catch this blurb in the Miami Herald ?

Recommended Posts

In a Sports Illustrated poll of 464 big-leaguers, the Marlins' Jeffrey Loria finished second in the ''worst owner'' category (19 percent), behind Kansas City's David Glass (21 percent), likely because of Florida's low payroll. Players couldn't vote for their own owner -- George Steinbrenner was named the best owner -- but Loria has ingratiated himself to some Marlins by offering encouragement, taking them to dinner (like Dan Uggla when he was struggling earlier this year), or buying them gifts occasionally. (When Josh Beckett once said he liked Loria's shirt, Loria gave him one the next day.)

Loria ranked next to last by MLB player survey

Anyone now think that this ownership doesn't affect how we can attract FA's in the future ?

Anyone else think marlinz_fan looks like Stewie in his avatar?

Free agents don't care as long as you show them the money.

Festa, why take a shot ? Can't you just discuss the matter at hand ? The fact is Loria will forever be a detriment to this franchise ever being a champion again. No one wants to play for him.

Mike Lowell

Luis Castillo

Paul LoDuca

Armando Benitez

etc. etc. etc.

Think overwise.

Actually Lowell and Castillo weren't true FA's, because of already played for the Marlins. Of those listed all were traded away or left on their own within 2 years of signing a contract. The Lowell & Delgado salary dumps & the avowed cheapness of Loria have and will continue to hurt the ability to sign true IN THEIR PRIME free agents.

We are doomed. Contraction or a move is inevitable.

Wouldn't one must first accept the premise that free agents can be disenchanted with a team's offer or future because of its owner?

I think the role played by an owner has a very small effect on a players decision on picking a certain team. More like manager, surrounding cast, location, ect. MONEY AND ONLY MONEY

Fixed.

When that opinion formed of ballplayers in response to free agency, there was probably some truth to it, but as players are guaranteed comfortable salaries earlier, other factors (including in some regard, a team's owner) play a large role. But you're probably right. Respect = salary in most eyes. (Yes, I just contradicted myself. Sue me.)

The Marlins organization has shown the ability to gather a mix of talented players, and any veteran who knows anything about the Fish should know that they have a good chance to compete when being on the team. But the Marlins don't have enough money or aren't willing to spend enough to lure free agents to this ball club. Forget the Carlos Delgado signing - we probably won't see another one of those in some time. Loria's wallet has tightened in the last two years. But really its not about the owner, but how much money is being offered. I bet players love Mr. Steinbrenner for his money, not so much for his glowing personality.
