Stairway To Heaven

Featured Replies

So, this was, for some reason, brought up in a thread about Luis Castillo, and the question is, what do you think of "Stairway to Heaven"?

I, for one, think that like everything else off of their 4th LP, "Stairway To Heaven" is massively, and grossly overrated. The first 3 minutes are boring as hell, the lyrics make no sense, and if it wasn't for the ripping guitar solo near the end, I would almost have nothing good to say about it.

I know it's sacrilegous to say this, but I'd take "Freebird" over "Stairway", because at least "Freebird" isn't trying to be anything more than a big dumb rock song with a sweet guitar solo. There are dozens of better Led Zeppelin songs, and the fact that this is the most famous is kind of bothersome to me.

What says you, Marlinsbaseball.com?

I like "Freebird" better too. The guitar playing on that song is just awesome, and you can't beat that long jam towards the end. I think I'll listen to it now.

"Stairway" is still a pretty good song, IMO, but I'm not crazy about it.

I love Stairway. It's one of my favorite songs. I've loved it since I first heard it. I love how the music keeps building up throughout the song.

i know its a different song but the Ojay's "stairway to heaven" is one of the greatest songs ever.

technically im not off-topic

:thumbup Agreed... I've been saying the same thing for quite some time... people love it because people love it... still one of the best, but very overrated IMO...

The guitar solo on Stairway is so overrated. That song begs for an absolute ripping guitar solo and its such a lame solo.

Song isn't bad at all, just extremely overrated.

I take Stairway.... the way it builds up the whole time for the final verse makes it perfect.

*Edit before someone chimes in.... perfect is a bit strong. Thats just the reason I like it a lot more than Freebird.... I also like Freebird less becuase of losers who yell FREEBIRD!!!! whenever a band is playing

I wouldn't say "yay", but I'd say "yea"

Many songs get "played out" in my mind.

But I NEVER get sick of Stairway To Heaven.

The thing is, Im not even into "that genre". Im a house/electro/new wave kinda guy. But I freakin love Stairway.

Additionally, Im not really a guitar solo guy but the solo makes me get goosebumps on my forearms.

Jimmy Page > Skynard

By the way, has anyone ever heard the track, "Hairway To Steven"?

Butthole Surfers, right?

The solo for Stairway is pretty awesome, but there are literally hundreds that move me more than that one (check out "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" for a goosebumps inducing guitar break).

Jimmy Page is a pretty awesome guitarist, and I'd say he's better than anyone in Skynyrd, but even the worst guitarists in the world can be momentarily inspired to greatness, and the guys in Skynyrd are far from the worst guitarists in the world. The "Freebird" solo > "Stairway" solo, even if "Freebird"'s solo is a bit overdone. It still kicks ass.

Yea.

I think the Freebird solo is repetitive and, although cool, it gets boring. The Stairway solo fits the mood of the song quite well and I love it, especially live versions of it where it really gets going. I agree it's not the greatest solo, but it's a good one. As far as While My Guitar Gently Weeps is concerned, that is definitely awesome, especially the live version with Clapton. But the most emotional guitar solo I have ever heard is Watermelon In Easter Hay by Zappa. Listen to it.

One of the best songs ever for sure. It starts off pretty good and it gets better with every passing second evolving into all out eargasm.

Stairway was a song I hated when I first listened to. I love it now. I saw a guy with a stairway to heaven shirt at the Marlins game...it was cool, had the lyrics and some other stuff.

If I leave here tomorrow

Would you still remember me?

For I must be travelling on, now,

'Cause there's too many places I've got to see.

But, if I stayed here with you, girl,

Things just couldn't be the same.

'Cause I'm as free as a bird now,

And this bird you can not change.

Lord knows, I can't change.

led > every other band ever except perhaps pink floyd

Beatles, The Who, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan (not a band, but still way better than Zep). Those are just their contemporaries.

I would take them over the Who and the Stones. I believe both of those bands are over-rated personally. Musical Influence hard to fight against the Beatles. Dylan I never got into sorry. I have all of his old vinals but I cant get into him for some reason no matter how much I try.

Then again I was always more Black Sabbath, Led, etc etc type of an individual.
