August 7, 200719 yr i think thats the only problem i have with a downtown ballpark. yes there will be plenty to do afterward but people seem to love to drive everywhere and with a downtown park there is a limit to the amount of parking. Actually that's one of the advantages of building ballparks in downtown locations --- lots of parking garages that would otherwise be empty on nights and weekends when the games are being played... and as a bonus, you don't have to blow a boatload of $$$ on new parking garages or chew up vast seas of land for surface parking. (again, this is a general rule --- every stadium situation is different)
August 7, 200719 yr Get a grip. I was just trying to be funny. Flint, Gary, and Camden happen to be in the top 5 in the country every single year in crime. It has nothing to do with race; you are the one race-baiting. Those towns are trash cuz of the crime, not because they have minorities. You are the one who jumped to the conclusion that trash = minorities, which says a lot about you. Using derisive comments is not being funny. You have a lot to learn. I'm just sick and tired of people throwing out uninformed generalities and holding them as "truths." I'm sick and tired of people who debase an entire group or city because of their simple ignorance or generalities. You see it all the time on the internet, which is becoming the new breeding ground for racism and bigotry because of the veil of anonimity. And don't give me that crap of, "I didn't say it, you jumped to the conclusion . . . " You don't have to say it to see what you mean. Are you that dense that you don't see the common thread in your speech? Or are you so dense that you don't see how your words affect other people because you don't see the world in terms of others, but only in your own little "whiteness." You damn well know the similarities between Flint, Gary and Camden and your inference was clear as a bell when you lump in Hialeah with them. Don't try to be "funny" now, or try to backpedal from your inferences because someone called you on it. This is isn't the first time you've made posts or comments such as those. I love how you need to turn the tables to make it seem like I'm the race-baiter or bigot. Why? Because I called you out on your inferences. Puh-lease, why don't you grow up and discuss topics like an adult, instead of some ignorant redneck. As for my other comments, nobody made a reference to me about "suspensions" or "bannings," but knowing how hypersensitive most of the mods on this board are, I wouldn't be surprised. And as a matter fact, I don't even care that much if it does happen. Some of the things that are accepted here baffle me, just like what is not accepted. I won't take back what I said about you, though.
August 7, 200719 yr Just had to put my 2 cents in. As a NONLATIN, I also take offense to any statement slighting S Florida based on ignorance of people or places. I have posted about the stadium in Hialeah in the past and feel that it would be a very, very strong sight if the plans that were proposed for it were real. A clean plot of land developed into an entertainment complex could be very successful. Sawgrass MALL is a destination, can you believe it, a destination for travelers on cruise ships etc, even listed as an excursion. Who would have thought that when it was proposed. The Hialeah location is so much better for the fan base for three counties, there is the turnpike, I-75, the Palmetto and the Sawgrass xpressway leading into that area. And what problem could anyone have with the people of Hialeah unless one is truly a jerk. These are hard working people who do not deserve to be insulted by anyone. Sure, there are benefits of a downtown stadium, given the built in population of the workforce in place which could make a big difference for all those weeknight games, as well as the afternoon businessman specials. Based on some of the observations about crime previously posted, Yankee stadium in the Bronx should have been blown up and given up for years ago. And the Orange Bowl location, well, I have been going there for many years, I do not have any concerns about my safety. It still comes down to getting the stadium built wherever it can get built. WE HAVE NOTHING RIGHT NOW. So hard to see how a forum for baseball conversation and stadium talk ends up being exploited by some people as a basis for spouting their hatred of people who are not like them.
August 7, 200719 yr Lets take a look at some crime statistics for all the big cities in Miami-Dade and Broward: As you can see, Hialeah is safer than Hollywood. Hialeah isn't the cesspool freedrinks and others portray it to be. It's a spanish-speaking blue collar bedroom community. Are you going to sink a city into the ocean because it's a spanish-speaking blue collar? That's where Hialeah gets it's stigma. Especially with the high and mighty English-only crowd in Broward County. Yes there are some parts of the city that are blighted, but that's the case in ever big city. Hialeah has the best roads in the county. It has the best parks, by far, in Miami-Dade and Broward County. Hialeah has undergone a transformation in recent years that is impressive. I went to private school in Hialeah. I went to high school in Hialeah. My grandparents have been living in Hialeah for 30 years. Most of my day-to-day business occurs in Hialeah. Except for bad driving, I have never had a problem in Hialeah.

So hard to see how a forum for baseball conversation and stadium talk ends up being exploited by some people as a basis for spouting their hatred of people who are not like them. That is how I see it as well although the problem with the OB is mostly convenience than safety. I hated going to Hialeah mostly because of the traffic andthe fact that I would always get lost but I am intrigued with the prospectives of the Hialeah site. an incredible development can be built there, btw don't have to drive through Hialeah to get there either nor deal with the traffic

Except for bad driving, I have never had a problem in Hialeah. Let's not forget the fact that the Hialeah Fire Department is regularly regarded as one of the best departments in the country and has repeatedly fought off take-over bids by Metro-Dade Fire! Speaking of "blight," every City in the country has some level of "blight." Then again, sometimes "blight" is in the eye of the beholder. What a Coral Gables person considers "blight" may very well be a working class neighborhood that doesn't live up to the high esteem of the City Beautiful. Perhaps our esteemed resident Hialeah bigot (who has expressed numerous times that he hasn't even driven through Hialeah) would like to take a little drive within four miles of a proposed Pompano Park stadium site. As someone who has to work with developers in Pompano Beach (and property owners who are within two miles of the Harness Track), I can show you blight and parts of that area that make Hialeah look like Pinecrest! Just for personal references, I was born and raised in Hialeah finally moving out when I was 17. In all of my time living in Hialeah, neither my home nor the home of ANY of my neighbors was ever broken into. The worst incident of "crime" in our neighborhood was when one of my friends put an M-80 "firecracker" in someone's mailbox. However, when I moved to Kendall, my house was broken into three (3) times in ONE SUMMER!!! To some folks, Kendall is "nice" while Hialeah is "blighted." Add to that fact that none of my relatives who still live in Hialeah have ever had their homes broken into or been the victims of crime within the City limits in the over 44 years they've lived there!! My biggest beef was the rash generalization of an entire community and the examples that were used to base such an "opinion." Using Camden, Gary, and Flint were specific flags that stated that blight and "non-whiteness" are hand in hand. Using the "defense" that, "..but I didn't say that being a minority meant . . ." won't carry the day because the inference was as clear as a bell. It's good to see that others are coming to the call of putting our esteemed "Hialeah Bigot" in his place.
August 7, 200719 yr Hialeah isn't a bad place to live at all. Miami Lakes is thrown in there along with Miami Springs, which are neighbors. I lived in Westchester and we were broken into. That's why we don't live in Westchester anymore.
August 7, 200719 yr Of course the biggest obstacle to a move to Hialeah is the $$$ lost when the city of Miami and its funding source is erased from the equation. It isn't ethics, it isn't ethnics, isn't anything except about money.

With the season going down quickly, the fish being pushed further to the back pages, there is no news about the stadium. Maybe it is all about waiting for what UM decides, but I am getting anxious and frustrated. I know some inside people at UM and they do not know what will be decided.

It is a real shame that the Florida Marlins, a Major League Baseball Franchise, future depends on a college football team. Only in S. Florida! We really need new ownership for this Franchise. Selig screwed us with coupon cutting Loria
August 20, 200719 yr its because this is the only place I have ever heard of where a college team is given more respect and adoraton than a professional team......that has got to change.....hell they talk more about the Canes on QAM than the fish.........I would bet my mortage they are going to Dolphin Stadium and the OB torn down......so we are going to a place with no parking, that will do very well in drawing crowds........
August 21, 200719 yr I honestly don't care where the new Marlins ballpark gets built, as long as it gets built. (My two site preferences are the OB site and Hialeah I-75/HEFT.)

Just practice hearing "No blocky, no blocky". But at least we can still have the good food vendors outside the stadium selling the shish ka bob, big ole sausages and grilled hot dogs with the hot onion and saurkraut for reasonable prices also.

We really need new ownership for this Franchise. Selig screwed us with coupon cutting Loria You're entitled to your opinion but the problem isn't the owner per se, it's the cost of developable land and lack of it especially here in already overbuilt South Florida with the Atlantic on one side and the Everglades on the other forcing partnerships (in the figurative sense) with local governments because it or they are the only ones in control of multiple (large) developable tracts needed to site a stadium (and requisite parking) and the ability to finance construction by issuing bonds. If it were anyone else except perhaps a half dozen of the richest individuals on the continent the deal, and the process, would probably be pretty much the same.
August 22, 200719 yr Ok so let me start by saying that I'm not looking for 100 thats a stupid idea posts. It boils down to the idea that im bored and this seems like a creative but farfetched solution to a stadium. It goes like this....everyone has been saying that the Hurricanes are possibly going to move out of the orange bowl and into DS sometime soon. That and the site for a new Marlins stadium would be possibly built near the OB. Now im from out of state and only get the news of stadium talk either on marlins.com or here. I would love nothing more to see my marlins playing in a baseball only stadium and hate seeing those hopes crushed by the fla legislature. Also I have never been inside the OB so im not sure what kind of condition it is in or whether it can be fitted for baseball. But the way I see it instead of building a new stadium on a new site why not take the OB and the 350 some odd million dollars that would be devoted and use that to a total renovation complete with luxury suites and such. the way i see you could save a lot of money buy already having an existing structure set up. Plus I think that any new marlins stadium should come with the teal monster. On idea alone not practicality i think its a pretty good idea. thoughts? Even if they bulldozed the OB and somehow teleported Camden Yards into the site, it is a horrible spot for a baseball stadium I worked 5 minutes from the staduim and hated the traffic, and surrounding areas. I can't think of the nightmare to having 81 games a year there, Parking is inaccesable and public transport options are extremely limited. The OB is the perfect site not to put a baseball stadium the infamous "infrastructure" clause can be used to improve access. So it could possibly work.
August 22, 200719 yr Welcome to the South buddy. In S. Florida it's Canes over everyone. Huh ???? Dude you need to get a clue.....Dolphins rule over EVERYTHING. Canes 2nd, and then the Heat. The Marlins are 4th and Panthers a distant 6th. I would say Gators and Noles come before even the Panthers. Have you listened to local radio here ? If you have you'd know the pecking order.
August 22, 200719 yr Hialeah, downtown Miami or the Orange Bowl site......who cares, just build the damn stadium !

August 22, 200719 yr OK. OK. Canes are moving to DS...am I right? I just need to check with you to see if I'm correct. :whistle In that case, this sets up an interesting possibly for what is now the soon-to-be-demolished OB: how about a baseball-friendly multipurpose facility that would accomodate CONCACAF in the off-season. I don't think it would add much to the cost. It has been proven at Enron Field that they can host some soccer matches. So the concept can be applied here as well. If the city can be convinced to free up some funds to change the stadium design so that it can be reconfigured to both sports, provide temporary seating over the outfield, sort of like how it's done at RFK Stadium, changing between the Washington Nationals and D.C. United. Then you add the sliding roof and we may wind up with a top-class facility. 38,000 to 40,000 seats should be more than enough to accomodate both competitions. There'd be 32,000 less seats anyway when we tear down the OB...meaning 32,000 less people that would theoretically congest the area. We could do something surrounding the new stadium like a huge proyector screen for people who can't get in...say... a World Series game or a World Cup match. Also, the people who show up for CONCACAF already live in the city, so less cars coming into the area. Even the baseball crowds at the OB would be more of a walk-up variety. A baseball/soccer facility: think of the possibilities I would bet my mortage they are going to Dolphin Stadium and the OB torn down......so we are going to a place with no parking, that will do very well in drawing crowds........ DS has ample parking. Attendance not going gangbusters for Marlins games last time I checked.
August 22, 200719 yr They aren't going to, because Jeffrey Loria and Bud Selig hate Florida. OMGOMGOMGOGMGO Now Loria has no excuse.....there will be a site available. Lets see how he squirms out of this one, in his quest to never get a stadium.

August 22, 200719 yr Wow, that Coral Springs place sure is safe, they should build the ballpark there. :whistle Anyway, I'm sure Hialeah is a nice place, but I believe you're missing the point, Festa. A lot of people in North Broward/Palm Beach perceive Hialeah as a bad place because of a thing called "racism".
