It goes like this....everyone has been saying that the Hurricanes are possibly going to move out of the orange bowl and into DS sometime soon. That and the site for a new Marlins stadium would be possibly built near the OB. Now im from out of state and only get the news of stadium talk either on marlins.com or here. I would love nothing more to see my marlins playing in a baseball only stadium and hate seeing those hopes crushed by the fla legislature.

 

Also I have never been inside the OB so im not sure what kind of condition it is in or whether it can be fitted for baseball. But the way I see it instead of building a new stadium on a new site why not take the OB and the 350 some odd million dollars that would be devoted and use that to a total renovation complete with luxury suites and such. the way i see you could save a lot of money buy already having an existing structure set up. Plus I think that any new marlins stadium should come with the teal monster. On idea alone not practicality i think its a pretty good idea. thoughts?

Even if they bulldozed the OB and somehow teleported Camden Yards into the site, it is a horrible spot for a baseball stadium I worked 5 minutes from the staduim and hated the traffic, and surrounding areas. I can't think of the nightmare to having 81 games a year there, Parking is inaccesable and public transport options are extremely limited. The OB is the perfect site not to put a baseball stadium

ok so i had some elaborate well thought out response but my computer just had issues so here is the cliffnotes

 

this project cost 143 million and we have proposed 300 plus million....left over money could be used for talent or a roof...(in case those figures dont include one)...plus this franchise is always looking for ways to save a buck. plus a metro line was proposed in the FIU study. there would be modes of transport a baseball only stadium and a roof.

 

plus loria could get some positive pr if he can be convinced to co finance with some prominent latin members of the community.

 

for a franchise that looks to save money this would be perfect...plus id rather have that idea then continue to play games in DS..i mean it would be a BALLPARK not a football stadium pretending to be one. i dont think any of us want to play the game with the legislature again even though they keep tellin us to wait till next year....we arent the brooklyn dodgers that wont be good enough...lets get some results!...i mean the report does not say anywhere of it being unacceptable...it seems like a positive concrete proposal...plus its not the fans u got to win over...its the politicians when it comes to money am i right?

Forgive my stupidity in asking this, but isn't the issue funding, rather than site location? I'm not saying that the site ISN'T an issue, just not THE issue right now. I thought the whole opportunity with the Canes moving to DS was that it could possibly free up some funds that would otherwise have gone to renovations and/or maintenance of the Orange Bowl.

 

On a side note, I'm wondering how much the "+1" proposals are going to end up impacting you guys in South Florida. I'm sure that Dallas and Phoenix will be rolling out the red carpet in an effort to host that game every year. You are correct the OB issue is NOT THE OB just the MONEY that will be freed up for the stadium wherever it will be. how can u put bicentennial at the top when there has been no recent talk about putting a stadium there. john henry tried that and got enough negative response from the public that they pulled out. mlb wants downtown and you mention camden yards. but id think that camden is way different than miami just because there is no other arena near the baseball stadium. plus there are plenty of routes to where congestion isnt that big of a problem. i think every city has a point where there are too many stadiums in a small space. as of right now the OB or hialeah may not be the perfect site but along with the park there should be additional metro stations installed similar to the nationals redevelopment of the area...san diegos park works and that was in a warehouse district...i think if they got the OB done and started now they would have enough time to perfect a plan

I would be in entire agreement except for the fact that the OB is in a RESIDENTIAL AREA

I put it at the top because it's the dream location of any ballpark regardless if it's viable or not.

 

BTW, there is a football stadium right next to the arena. So I have no idea what type of point you're trying to make.

 

EA, Camden Yards was built in a heavily industrialized area at the time. Coor Field in an absolute dump. Wrigley is in a residential area.

Perhaps you should go back and check your link. What you've given doesn't match with what you're saying. The "press release" you've linked references a "senior class project" by a group of engineering students to see if the Orange Bowl could be retrofitted for baseball. To characterize that as something produced by FIU is incorrect. Also, there is no reference that this was done at the "request of the City of Miami and Miami-Dade County." As a matter of fact, the last paragraph in the "press release" states, "the students have approached the City of Miami with their proposal, but have not met with anyone in the administration. But if a meeting takes place, he believes the project will impress."

True....i hate the ravens so i try to forget that they are there most of the time. to be honest you can find plenty of examples of problems and benefits of a downtown stadium or residential. it all boils down to infrastructure i think. for me going to orioles games isnt that bad because there are plenty of ways to get there. to get to camden you can either drive on the interstate which has multiple exits that all lead to the ballpark or take the lightrail which has free parking and a stop at both ravens stadium and camden. the only problem with driving is leaving the park when the whole surrounding area turns into a parking lot. i think thats the only problem i have with a downtown ballpark. yes there will be plenty to do afterward but people seem to love to drive everywhere and with a downtown park there is a limit to the amount of parkinkg. to me retrofitting the OB into a baseball only stadium makes sense economically so it should be investegated further and possibly be given first priority because it could be the easiest and best shot at getting through politicians which as ive stated before is really the only thing standing in the way of a marlins baseball stadium

Downtown has great public transportation links and is right off 95, and perfect access for Dade and downtown office workers. I could also live with Pompano (although it's probably a pipe dream) because it would draw fans with the nearby beach, great access from Ft Lauderdale and Palm Beach, and the casino. Hialeah is unacceptable because it belongs with Camden, New Jersey, Gary, Indiana and Flint, Michigan in the world of Towns That Should be Sunk into the Nearest Ocean or Lake.
