An Interesting Question

Featured Replies

I just saw this on Yahoo.

If a MLB player came out as being openly gay during his playing career, would he be cut from the team?

Seems to me with the guaranteed contracts, the teams couldn't do anything about it. Players are professionals, they are business men. I doubt it would be like high school or college where they would be ostracized. There must be several MLB players who are gay. They should just come out and live their lives openly and honestly. I guess my question is then, why don't they come out?

I don't think he'd be cut from the team, but I can definitely imagine that players and some coaches may feel uncomfortable around this person in the clubhouse. This is probably the reason why he wouldn't come out yet.

If a player (esp. a star player) comes out publicly, how would you feel about him?

I wouldn't care. I would admire that person more for coming out during his playing career, actually.

Discuss.

By the way, this is a touchy subject. So let's respect each other's opinions and keep this civil. Thanks. :)

In reality all that matters is how good he is. If AROD came out and said he was gay, do you think anyone on the yankees or their fans would care? However if Jared Wright (someone not good) came out you would hear a lot of different things which would all be negative.

I wouldnt have any problems with a player (star or not) coming out of the closet.

Id actually respect then more for having the ba**s to come out and risk the backlash.

I dont see it happening anytime soon though.

All I'm going to say is there ARE players in MLB who are gay right now, they are high-profile players and their sexual preference is known throughout baseball circles.

I don't think 'outing' a player would have a big in-house change...it'd be all about fan perception, and let's just say the player(s) in question don't exactly play in soft-fan cities. I think closeting has a bigger role in fan protection than clubhouse maintenance.

A big ole hanging curveball was left for me up in the zone. What could I do other than hit it out of the ballpark? :p

As long as the player doesn't Touch any of his teammates or look at them weird while they're in the showers then i don't see a problem with it.

for the most part the fans will be ok with it i think, or at least appear to be ok with it... BUT as soon as they get into a slump get ready for the trash talk they're going to hear (well they're always going to hear at least a little bit but a slump would bring it out in full force). oh and the tabloids, i dont even wanna imagine it, they'll be all over it whether its Alex Rodriguez or some scrub no one's ever heard of.

the players are differet, they actually interact with each other, change and shower with each other so there's gonna be discomfort and some prejudice.

and Barry Bonds plays in San Francisco, if they love him now....

but san fran's special :lol

At least your a good sport about it.

Well done.

:)

Not a problem with me. Personally if I were a gay athlete I'd keep it to myself though.

I wouldn't have a problem with an openly gay Baseball player at all, but it's not something we're likely to see anytime soon. I imagine there are very few people who want to be the "gay Jackie Robinson." Most likely, they just want to be viewed as baseball players, not gay baseball players.

The names I hear more than any other are Piazza and former Oriole Brady Anderson.

He did have that mustache for a while...

Right.

If they have a press conference about it, to me, that's saying they want to be known as gay baseball players.

You are absolutely right about that first part! However, I think it's both fan protection and a clubhouse issue. Eventually I suppose a player will come out while he's still playing but it will be tough. Anyone read Billy Bean's "Going the Other Way?"

There are many players who are not homophobic and wouldn't care but for many it would be an uncomfortable issue once it was out in the open even if they are already aware of it.
