August 19, 200718 yr about 15,000 of the tickets were sold to UM I doubt that all the UM tickets were used. Even then, you're talking around 28,000 besides them. At the very least, it seems like a few people are willing to come out if they'll see history. After all, who knows which HR will be Barry's last? The guy could blow out his knee the next inning or the next day and retire for good. That said, I'd be willing to bring him in for it next season. Even if he takes a game off every series, imagine him batting behind Cabrera. And hell, if we could get a rotation together, it could be his best shot at a ring as well. Who cares who the tickets were sold too, there were still 42,000 people. Hopefully next year the pitching can be much better so we arent out of the race by mid july. I dont think I've watched a game in 3 weeks, besides the one I went to aug 4.
August 19, 200718 yr The overwhelming # of Sheffield/Alou/Conine (19) jerseys running around tonight showed that the Marlins still can be fashionable on occasion through the season and that the fans haven't written the team off as completely irrelevant. We need to do something to legitimize the franchise...I was shocked at the number of fans, and that the overwhelming majority of them were Marlins fans. Non-playoff non-opening day crowds with over 40K are usually 50/50 splits...not tonight. In agreement. I saw the same thing
August 19, 200718 yr When we went on Friday, my cousin was like i wonder how many people, that were there, had never seen a game in there life but are there just to see Bonds. It got loud and the camera flashes kept going off when Bonds went up to bat!!

For comparison For the season: Marlins 17,178 Drays 16,453* * take a look at the difference between redsox/yankee games and all others. When those teams are in tampa there are 30,000 people, when any other team is there there is around 10,000. Please go away

Delgado. Benitez. Loria shells out a contract from time to time when he doesn't let Samson and Beinfest talk him out of it.
August 20, 200718 yr Slightly off-topic and I know its a longshot but if Bonds doesnt come back next year as a Giant, why would he come back to the NL and not as a DH for an AL contender? FWIW, Im all for Barry coming to play LF as a Marlin and moving Hammer to 1B but I just don't see how its possible.
August 20, 200718 yr two things 1) Apperently nobody was interested in Bonds last year outside of....I think it was St Louis. And that was when he was chasing the record. 2) Money. Obviously not something that can be considered to be on 'our side' but he'll go where the money is. Not that I'm saying it will happen, because it would cost like, what, 15-20m? So translation: pipe dream. Just that if our FO really did want him, I'd imagine we could get him.
August 20, 200718 yr Two things Barry wants to accomplish before he retires: 1) World championship 2) 3,000 hits He has no shot at one of those with us. :mischief

My understanding is $8-10 mil will have him. And my other understanding is the Marlins offered a little more than that this past off-season (albeit with deferred money) as we were one of only 3 teams with offers on the table.

August 20, 200718 yr Note to FO: Barry Bonds = Lots of Fans Sign him this off season. :mischief I agree to some extent that we need to make a signing splash but.... Dammit, Miguel Cabrera and Hanley Ramirez should = Lots of Fans This team has a few players that are really worth seeing, no excuses to fill up the place only for someone else's star

Dammit, Miguel Cabrera and Hanley Ramirez should = Lots of Fans This team has a few players that are really worth seeing, no excuses to fill up the place only for someone else's star As great as Cabs and Hanley are, they don't even compare on the star meter to Barry Bonds, not even close at this point. Few more thoughts on this: Bonds would bring extra fans to the stadium and he is still one of the elite hitters in baseball. Somebody else mentioned he would have no shot at a championship with us next year, I disagree. The national league is weak. Stick Bonds in LF or 1B and we would have one of the best lineups in baseball. If the starting rotation could be just average next year and we can get the same production from the bullpen, why not? This is the type of signing that would absolutely make total sense for us.

The two deserve each other to provide protection. SICK lineup.
August 20, 200718 yr Has there ever been a better 3>4 then Bonds>Cabrera, outside of Ruth>Gehrig? Then there's Hanley leading off, followed by Hammer and Hermida, two .800-.850+ ops guys. Jesus. And you have to go with the assumption that our pitching will be better next year. It just has to. It can't be this bad again. I hope |:
