Your thoughts on Dan Uggla?

Featured Replies

Although Dan is one of my favorite Marlins, I cannot deny that he has been struggling immensely this year at the plate. The same goes for Jacobs and Olivo. What do you think should be done about our lack of ability to drive in runners in scoring position?

I am new to the board, so don't give me a hard time if this has been discussed many times before.

Welcome to the board bro.

And about Uggy, well he does have 27 HRs, its just that he's one of those either everything or nothing type of guys, he either hits a HR or strikes out..

He's extremely valuable as a 2nd baseman. He's underrated defensively, and he's a great hitter for a 2nd baseman.

wont go as far as extremely but I agree with the rest

He is perfect to mash (preferably batting 6th or 7th) in our lineup for the next 2 seasons. Year 5 (and especially year 6) might make him not worth arbitration based off gaudy R/HR/RBI numbers versus lower OBP, K rate, etc, but that's a 2010 problem. We should keep him until Coghlan is capable of starting, and then trade him for above his worth based on HR/perception basically.

His act is starting to get old. He's Adam Dunn at 2B. All or nothing

I would take a 2B version of Adam Dunn any day.

Uggla's got good power, but he needs to get the batting average up, and his approach with runners on base is poor.

I agree, but it can get annoying at times. The fact is a hitter like uggla does not help a team that struggles with situational hitting.

He's hit 50 homeruns these last two seasons and his 23 this year lead all second basemen. He's far from the problem on this team.

Crimson,

I love your sig. That is very well done!

You can't ask for anything more from a second baseman.

He's in the right spot of the order (7th) but for all the wrong reasons. Either way, I'll take it and no longer blame him for anything.

Now, once we start batting Hermida second, jeez will that offense be something to be reckoned with.

Dan is not quite the power hitter we think he is. Yes he takes the HR cut and sure he can drive the ball. Though it's just a very small sample I would be shocked if this was not the reality long term.

Batting #2: .497 Slugging % (457AB) 69RBI 23HR

Batting #5 .294 Slugging % (17AB) 1 RBI 0HR

Batting # 6 .211 Slugging % (19AB) 0 RBI 0HR

When Hanley bats in front of you(and is on base) you tend to get more fastballs to prevent steals.

When Hanley bats in front of you, you are hitting with a runner on base 1 out of every 3 at bats and get better pitches to hit.

With Cabrera on deck, no one ever wants to walk Uggla, especially with Hanley on base.

This is why Uggla was able to take his HR cut, strike out quite a bit but also drive fat pitches deep. Now w/o the same kind of opportunity and protection pitchers are not challenging him with fat fastballs, but out of the strikezone curves and the dreaded inside high-fastball he can't lay off of.

Unless Uggla decides to become a hitter, he is an under .250 hitter with some pop. We have seen hitters such as Willingham, Hanley, and Hermida adjust after pitchers figured them out. We have seen players such as Olivo and Uggla refuse or be unable to adjust.

Come on Dan, 260-270 with 15-20 HRs would be perfectly fine. If you go for 30HRs next season, we're likely to see .240, an under .300OBA and a slugging% that fits the #8 spot in the lineup.

Wish I could take credit for it. Libelula made it. He posted it in the Outfield thread about the Site Banner.

Batting 1 for 12 (.083) with the bases loaded this year and .211 with runners in scoring position. Other than that he is fine.

He has been a rally killer and his performance with risp has caused much pain. Last night's first inning is too indicative of many of his at bats. His power numbers show he has something to build on but he needs to learn to make contact more often.

His big swings especially with two strikes show he is not working on contact. His power numbers show the results of fat fastballs pitched to him with Hanley on base and Cabrera on deck. There is nothing in his minor league history or anything outside of the first half of 2007 to make us think any different.

LUIS CASTILLO

Only way it's even a consideration is if Uggla is the key to getting Justin Upton, BJ Upton, Cameron Maybin or Curtis Granderson.

You don't just jettison Uggla's kind of production, for a second baseman, it's epic.
