Joe Girardi: New Yankees Manager

Featured Replies

I am here to confilm that the Yankees will be announcing me as their new GM tomorrow. :cool

So Cashman's out of a job? This doesn't fix the manager hole though.

What a good choice to manage the great young arms they have next year.

:|

so who should we sell on first?

Homer Bailey or Joba Chamberlain

:(

:lol

Good point.

Joba is going to long for the bugs once Girardi gets a hold on him.

The Yankees officially offered their managerial job to Joe Girardi on Monday morning and he is expected to accept it, a source has told 1050 ESPN New York's Andrew Marchand.

"The Yankees have offered Joe the opportunity to become their next manager. Discussions are ongoing." Steve Mandell, Girardi's agent, said. Yankees general manager Brian Cashman told Don Mattingly and Tony Pena that they will not be getting the job.

Girardi was in Denver for the World Series. A source said he is expected to fly to New York for the announcement, which is likely to come Tuesday. Girardi's contract is expected to be in the three-year, $6 million range.

Mattingly will not accept a position on the Yankees coaching staff, Marchand and ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney are reporting.

Girardi, a former Yankees player and coach, was voted NL Manager of the Year in 2006 after keeping Florida in contention until late in the season.

:banghead Damn...i wanted it to be Don Mattingley...

I hope Joe's not as up tight as he was here or else the players are gonna hate him...

Well i wish him luck and hopefully he gets up back to the promise land....

I hope he falls flat on his face.

Joe won't get the job because people in the Yankees are worried about how much of an impact Girardi had on our starter's injuries this season (right or wrong, it's a fair concern). Joe would get the job if he convinces the team he's more of a scapegoat than a pariah for what happened here, and that's a tall order with incredibly high-stakes.

In case no one's noticed, Hughes, Chamberlain and Kennedy all look like pretty nice young arms. I'm sure the Yankees would like to keep them around.

Apparently the Yankees organization doesn't blame Girardi for the injuries.

The Yankees want a leader who isnt afraid to ruffle feathers and Girardi is that guy. Based on their performances in the playoffs the past few years, the Yankees needed a shake up and now they will get one.

Congrats to Joe on his new job back in the dugout.

Well, as I said, if he's able to convince them that he was a scapegoat, then all is rosy for Joe.

Personally, I think Cashman knows his job is on the line if this season doesn't come up with a better finish, and because of that he went with a guy with at least some experience over Mattingly and his zero experience. That and I think Hal and Hank are giving Cashman more autonomous control over the restructuring, and as such, Cash's recommendations go a lot further than they would have four years ago.

Like i said before i wanted Mattingley, but i think Joe will do a fine job..

The sad part about all this is that i dont see Donny Baseball wanting to work under Girardi...

And thats not gonna be good with the club cause he was loved by the current roster and also he's a Yankee legend that just got fu*ked over, cause from what i've heard is that he was promised the job after Torre left...

I hope he falls flat on his face.

Why?

He actually performed in his time here.

Too much strife while he was here, and on some level I never really cared for him. Plus, he never really wanted the Marlins job. He always had his eyes on Torre's seat with the Yankees. There was talk of him leaving before he ever got here. It's not wholly rational. My general perception of him is just negative.

I guess I want him to fail with Yankees because that was his ultimate goal to begin with. We were just a stepping stone along the way.

Mattingly essentially just tendered his resignation, Mike & the Mad Dog read his press release.

Honestly, his dream job was with the Cubs, but after the past two offseasons, can you blame anyone for viewing the Marlins as nothing more than a AAAA proving ground?

We start acting legitimately, people start treating us that way.

Steinbrenner has hired his Billy Martin...Major change in the Yankee clubhouse for 2008

I dont think so.....

Matin's players were afraid of him, nobody in that clubhouse is gonna be afraid of Girardi..

Remember alot of these guys played with him... Think about your buddy who you use to mess around with and go to bars and talk sh*t becomming your boss... u still afraid?

:thumbdown thats majorly sucked....

Girardi is the opposite of a "player's manager," but his time with the marlins shows he wasn't a front-office yes man either. It'll be interesting to see how things play out in NY. He seemed to have a pretty good relationship with the media in New York, which is essential to successful managing there. He wanted the job, now he's going to have to live under the microscope. Good luck.

I'm cautiously optimistic.

As far as losing Donnie Baseball goes, with all due respect, oh well. He's a name, a name Yankee fans love, but what has he done as a coach other than act as window dressing?

ARod just forced Cashman's hand - something I don't think he would have had the balls to do on his own - and now has an opportunity to build this team according to his design. If/when that fails, the Yankees FO will be forced to find a better GM.

I can't for the life of me understand why any Marlins fan would want Girardi to fall flat on his face.

Disliking someone and wishing someone failure are two different things.

Not always.

But in this case, I'm going to have to agree with you. I hope he does well. He has enormous shoes to fill.
