Joe Girardi: New Yankees Manager

Featured Replies

NEW YORK -- Yankees general manager Brian Cashman was due in Tampa, Fla., on Monday to start interviewing candidates to replace Joe Torre as manager.

Former Florida Marlins manager Joe Girardi, Yankees bench coach Don Mattingly and New York first base coach Tony Pena were the first three candidates invited to interview for the job, which opened last Thursday when Torre refused the Yankees' offer of a $5 million, one-year contract.

Hank Steinbrenner, a son of owner George Steinbrenner, said five or six candidates will be interviewed and that a decision isn't likely until after the World Series.

I hope Mattingly gets the job.. Him or Pena..

I just dont see the vets meshing with someone like Girardi...

Remember some of the guys still playing on this team were his teammates and i dont think they would follow him...

What does Don Mattingly bring to the table that Torre doesn't? I don't see the difference and Mattingly hasn't even managed before.

I agree, but it's definitely his to lose.

Girardi has this.

Its not even close to a lock for Girardi.

Donnie Baseball has been with the Yankees FOREVER and if Steinbrenner learned anything from Girardi's one year with the Marlins, its that Girardi is not a yes man by any means.

Essentially, Girardi was fired because he approached Loria about barking at the umpires for balls and strikes. This is fact. Steinbrenner isnt stupid enough to bark at umpires over balls and stikes but he and his son's want a yes man not an independant manager like Girardi.

Girardi has this.

The Steinbrenners know Girardi very well. He fits well with the tradition (former player, club house culture, etc). I think he has as good of a shot as anyone.

I dont see Joe getting that job... The Boss wont like what he did here against the front office and also i just dont see the veterans on this team following a guy like Joe who was posada's back up at one time...

The Boss problaby doesn't even consider the Marlins FO as a "legit" or functional front office. He probably sees them as one of the teams sucking on his luxury tax. . . .

Veterans not following Joe? I don't see the point you are trying to make.

You say "backup" - the Yankees say "teacher." :mischief

If anything, the class Joe showed as a backup catcher teaching his replacement helps his cause - as does his manager of the year award. I still think this is Donnie Baseball's to lose as well, but Girardi has a legitimate shot.

What i mean from the vets not following Joe is that they played with this guy...he wasnt a star, and he's still very young... i just dont see it working out there like it did here, he got away with it here cause we have young low profile players...

IMO i just dont see it working out..

Joe won't get the job because people in the Yankees are worried about how much of an impact Girardi had on our starter's injuries this season (right or wrong, it's a fair concern). Joe would get the job if he convinces the team he's more of a scapegoat than a pariah for what happened here, and that's a tall order with incredibly high-stakes.

In case no one's noticed, Hughes, Chamberlain and Kennedy all look like pretty nice young arms. I'm sure the Yankees would like to keep them around.

I agree, I'm pretty sure the vet's much rather follow Donnie Baseball. Especially since he has been there, with Torre, for the last 4 years. The only problem is that he's never been a manager and it's a little much to ask for a first year guy to manage the Yankees.

Joe Girardi apparent leader in race for Yanks' manager

The Yankees apparently have reached a decision on a new manager, which they are prepared to announce Sunday or Monday, and there were increasing signs Saturday night pointing to Joe Girardi.

As has been stated by Yankee ownership, GM Brian Cashman is the one who will make the recommendation to ownership based on his interviews with all three candidates - Girardi, Don Mattingly and Tony Pe?a - along with advice from all his baseball people.

The recommendation then would need to be given final approval by the Steinbrenner family.

While nobody in the Yankee high command was prepared to speculate on Cashman's favorite, sources familiar with the GM's thinking pointed out that Girardi had all the characteristics - an analytical approach, organizational skills that come from having already managed (the Florida Marlins) and a proven ability to handle a pitching staff - Cashman is thought to be looking for.

In addition, one source told the Daily News last night that "in no way would politics enter into Brian's decision" - an indication the Yankees are not concerned about a potential public-relations hit if the popular Mattingly did not get the job.

The PR wounds from the Joe Torre parting still are fresh, and if the Yankees choose Girardi, Mattingly almost certainly would not agree to serve under him. Mattingly has stated that the only reason he came out of retirement and agreed to serve a coaching apprenticeship was to eventually manage in the Bronx.

Once Cashman formally presents his recommendation to the Steinbrenner family, presumably today, a contract would have to be negotiated, which club sources said would probably take at least a day.

Sources say none of the three candidates is talking about a huge-money deal such as the last two contracts Torre had.

The Yankees have conducted a thorough search since Torre rejected their one-year offer on Oct. 18, bringing Girardi, Mattingly and Pe?a to Tampa last week for day-long interviews.

In addition to getting the opinions of his baseball operations staff, Cashman has been indirectly soliciting thoughts from the Yanks' veteran players, including their pending free agents, and all are said to be fine with any of the three candidates.

Although as of last night no one from the Yankees had requested permission from Bud Selig to make an announcement during the World Series, MLB acknowledged that it expected something to happen soon.

In recent days there have been recurring reports of a split among Yankee brass over Girardi and Mattingly, but last night two sources adamantly denied that. And on Friday, Hank Steinbrenner indicated that he and Cashman have been in agreement for days on a leading candidate.

"This is a decision that is strictly going to be based on who everyone feels gives us the best chance to be in the playoffs next year," a source said.

"I can tell you at this point, the family and the baseball people are pretty much in agreement," Steinbrenner said Friday. "We are close, still a few details to work out and some more thinking on it. That's about it."

Kranitz should have waited a little longer before going to the O's.
