Many big names available through trade

Baseball's "Hot Stove" season is upon us, and that means, naturally enough, the focus will be on high-profile free agents like Alex Rodriguez, Mariano Rivera and Torii Hunter.

On balance, however, this isn't a particularly strong free-agent class, and that means teams may turn to the trade market to fill their holes. With that in mind, let's take a look at the top 10 names who may find themselves on the trading block this winter ...

1. Miguel Cabrera, 3B, Marlins

Cabrera's only 24 years of age and he's already one of the best pure hitters in baseball. Despite playing his home games in a pitcher's environment, he's authored a career batting line of .320 AVG/.401 OBP/.565 SLG, and he's averaged 77 extra-base hits over the last three seasons. Thanks to poor conditioning and spotty footwork, he's probably not going to be able to stay at third much longer (he's already a brutal defender there), but his bat will play anywhere. It's not a stretch to call him "Albert Pujols Light," and almost any team could use this MVP-caliber hitter. Lots of teams are in the market for third-base help, so Cabrera should generate plenty of interest.

2. Scott Kazmir, LHS, Rays

Joel Sherman of the New York Post reported that the Rays may consider shopping Kazmir, but that would be a deliriously stupid decision on their part. You simply don't trade a hard-throwing, 23-year-old lefty who just led the AL in strikeouts. In fact, you don't even discuss it. However, stranger (read: dumber) things have happened, so one never knows. It seems the remotest of long-shots that Tampa would move Kazmir, but if they do shop him than, quite honestly, all 29 other teams should be interested.

3. Johan Santana, LHS, Twins

Cabrera and Kazmir are ranked higher only because of age; in terms of immediate impact, however, Santana is tops. Over the past four seasons, the Minnesota lefty has been, without question, the best pitcher in baseball. He'll still be only 29 years of age in the upcoming season, so there's plenty more where that came from. Should the Twins decide to move him, then he'll be the most sought-after talent on the trade market. He'd be an ideal addition for the Mets or Phillies.

4. Adam Dunn, OF, Reds

Fans and observers delight in focusing on what Dunn can't do ? hit for average and make consistent contact. However, what he does do well ? hit for power and get on base ? is far more important. The Reds would do well to hang onto Dunn and instead try to move the aging Ken Griffey Jr., but that's probably not going to happen. Still, with the anticipated arrival of top prospect Jay Bruce, the outfield is going to be crowded. That might mean a trade of Dunn. He's about to turn 28, which means he's still in his prime. Anyone in need of power and OBP from the outfield corners, first base or DH should put out the feelers. He'd be a great fit in Oakland or Anaheim.

5. Miguel Tejada, SS/3B, Orioles

Tejada suffered through an injury-riddled campaign in 2007, but he's still got something left in the tank. He's not a great defender at short any longer; however, he's got enough glove to get by, and, if healthy, his offense will more than make up for any shortcomings with the glove. He'd certainly help the chances of the Cubs or Blue Jays, who could both use more pop from short.

6. Dontrelle Willis, LHS, Marlins

Willis will be hotly pursued by any number of teams, and it's likely that the Marlins will move him before Opening Day. Still, caveat emptor: Willis has seen his ERA, innings pitched, strikeouts, walks, home runs allowed and hits allowed all get worse in back-to-back-to-back seasons. His age, 25, suggests he should be getting better, but his numbers suggest he's in a pattern of premature decline. Giving up much for Willis is a risky proposition.

7. Scott Rolen, 3B, Cardinals

Rolen isn't happy that Tony La Russa will be back in the St. Louis dugout, and that means he might be willing to waive his no-trade clause. With Rolen you get Gold Glove-caliber defense, right-handed power and injury concerns. The team that acquires him will also be on the hook for the final three years of his contract. Still, Rolen was an excellent contributor as recently as 2006 and he's definitely a "change of scenery" guy.

8. Brian Fuentes, LHR, Rockies

Supposedly, the Rockies are shopping Fuentes, who, despite being defrocked of his closer's duties, still put together an enviable season in 2007 (3.08 ERA in 61.3 innings). In fact, he's been outstanding over the last three seasons (despite, of course, toiling in Coors Field roughly half the time), and he's also not especially vulnerable to the opposite side. In other words, he's much more than a "lefty specialist," and he'd improve any team's bullpen. They could certainly use him in Detroit.

9. Jon Garland, RHS, White Sox

Garland has emerged as a consistent innings guy (he's logged at least 208.1 frames in each of the last four seasons) who'll give you an ERA a tick or two above the league average. An ace he's not, but as third/fourth starters go, Garland's an asset. He'd be a fit in Milwaukee or St. Louis.

10. Joe Crede, 3B, White Sox

With Josh Fields ready to take over at third, the White Sox may be looking to ship off Crede. The third baseman has recovered nicely from lower-back surgery, and he's hoping to return to his pre-2007 levels of performance. When healthy, Crede boasts solid power skills and excellent instincts at the hot corner. And, yes, Crede's a better player than Hank Blalock, who's also rumored to be on the trading block.

Really with the exception of the first three names on the list and Dontrelle is there really a market for any of these players. Maybe the Marlins can resign Jared Camp and trade him back to the Twins for Santana

Hahahaha. You have to give it to Goodwill after you use it for a few years and people finally start getting used to it.

I'm starting to get delirious from this team.
