From the way he was used last season one would have doubts Moehler is capable of pitching long relief anymore.

If he can't even do the one thing we might need him for,which is long relief and emergency starts, then we have no use for him and the organization will realize that and he shouldn't be getting any consideration.

As for Opening Day, I'd give the nod to Olsen, assuming his Spring numbers back it up... and I'd do this for a couple of reasons.. 1 - Miller is still very young and might feel too much pressure coming in and expected to be the ace... 2 - Olsen has shown some great promise at times. All he needs is to mature a little and he's capable of putting up some really good numbers.. But I think it'd be a slap in the face to him if some rookie with little to no MLB experience comes in and takes the nod over him.

December 31, 200718 yr A Moehler signing is a typical Beinfest stratergy. He likes a vereran presence as a 5th starter. Almost like having another coach to teach young pitchers by example by showing their savy. If it's not Moehler it will be someone else. Just remember they still need to show their ability to help the club in ST. It is similar to liking that seasoned closer. That was why Julio was signed at the end of ST. He however was just signed based on reputation and not performance. Let's just hope Beinfest does not make the same mistake twice

Not only was his line good the year he was here (you take one inning in SD out of an entire years worth of stats and he has a 2.08 ERA for the Marlins, as it was he was 3.12 w/2 homeruns the whole year and none at home), he had to be one of the gutsiest guys to ever play the game with two club feet that 99 other guys would have used as reason to not even try to play the game. And he certainly had to overcome a great deal, but once they are out on the field, no player wants to be judged on how well they do given their limitations, just their performance. I guess his numbers were better than my perception because he went deep into the count and sometimes got seriously squeezed by the umps. I recall a lot of stomach turning moments with him and the bullpen that year.

Olsen has the most experience and he's thrown more innings as a marlin then any of our other starters. My argument was that it should go to the pitcher who will give us the best chance to win and that could very well be Olsen if he has a good spring. I'm just hoping that it comes down to a battle and Miller and Mitre also recieve an equal tryout and nobody is favored for the spot. Though if all three have an average spring with nobody standing out in particular, it will most likely go to Olsen and I wouldn't have a problem with that.
January 1, 200818 yr I think that first game starter is your team ace thing is blown way out of proportion. I say see how ST goes, make an educated guess of the pitchers we will be facing the first 5 games and the line ups, and then decide who pitches when at that time. Labels can be so misleading.

His overall numbers don't look great, but he posted impressive results in August and September last year and could merit consideration as a long (a.k.a. mopup) reliever. Moehler allowed one run over 12 innings in August, spanning 10 games, and in September, he yielded three runs over 12 innings.
