March 10, 200818 yr With the way he's playing does De Aza get another chance to be the Opening Day CF, like last year? I know it's only spring training but this is the second year in a row he's come in and showcased his tools (including a new one...power). It looks like Maybin needs some seasoning and even though I like Ross he's been quiet.
March 11, 200818 yr Funny, I was just about to start the same thread. :thumbup Give the kid credit he is not intimidated by his competition's phenom status nor Cody's rep. He's just going out there every day he's given a chance and beating their brains in. In some ways he's making the club's decision about what to do with Maybin a little easier if he can keep playing the way he has. Maybe it wasn't a fluke he won the centerfield job last spring after all. He has three weeks to pull a rabbit out of his hat and claim the job for himself. Cantu appears to be doing it (to his credit), why not de Aza? It will be interesting to see what he's made of and whether he fades at the finish line but right now with a slugging percentage that looks like most superstar's OPS if Fredi gives him the chance I for one will be rooting for him.

March 11, 200818 yr I'm wondering if the staff is worried about the loss of power with the departure of Cabrera and Olivo, they may go with Ross. If they feel comfortable in the run-producing area, they may go with one of the other guys. Like I said earlier, it's pretty much a toss-up at this point.

Are we really losing run production without Olivo? Basically everyone in our lineup got more RBIs and a higher SLG than he did.

I threw him in there to cover my bases.
March 11, 200818 yr It's gotta take a lot IMO for him to at least beat out Ross. Remember, this time last year Ross had a horrible spring, Joe Borchard beat the hell out of the ball, and some were calling for Cody's release. He obviously doesn't floursh in ST. De Aza is playing great, and I am rooting for him and everyone in a Marlin uni to excell... But I just don't know. I don't even think management knows who they want out there right now. But like someone said, his performance mixed with Ross' profile is really making their decision easier on what to do with Maybin.
March 11, 200818 yr It seems Maybin is not ready for 2008 season 'cause the hammy trouble. Maybin is our Future CF, definitly. We don't rush him. (NOT Girardi DID that in 2006.) Look at the CF competing situation in ST, right now. Who is the best? That's it~!

Well said. :thumbup Yea. Wouldn't be our first ST phenom. But I think he has what it takes. That early injury last year really hurt him at the plate when he came back, IMO. I fully expect a platoon of him and Cody come Opening Day. Maybin needs time. What surprised me, and convinced me even more on this, is in Ft Myers Maybin was there but they started Cody in CF instead. McPherson was the DH (IMO he needs to shorten his swing) instead of playing 1B like I thought would happen, and we had Tagg playing 1B.
March 11, 200818 yr Don't forget Brett Carroll. I think it's still a four-man race. Kinda sorta. I don't think Brett has the speed to consistently start in CF for us. I like the kid but he is between a rock and a hard place right now. He can handle the corners defensively with the best of them, but we don't have an open spot for him at either one or on the bench. We just have to wait and see how Hammer's back holds up. I have my doubts on that and think Brett will be plaing LF before the ASB.
