This is from the ESPN Chat today with Jayson Stark....

fish fan: jayson if the marlins keep up this hot start and are in contention by the all star break, are they buyers or sellers? and if were buyers i would assume it would be for starting pitching do you see anyone out there that would look good on the marlins?

SportsNation Jayson Stark: (1:33 PM ET ) If they're in it, they have to be buyers, or MLB should investigate. They take in something like $70 million a year before they sell a ticket, and their payroll is $22 million. So they have to buy, and I think they will. But can this really continue? That's a fun, pesky team. But it's still being outscored for the year. They've committed the most errors in the league. And the starting pitching has a five-plus ERA. That's a tough formula to sustain for six months.

Why is it that every sportswriter keeps saying the same thing. They can't sustain, they will fall back, they will come down to earth soon, they will sonn be in the bottom half of the league, etc etc... I have heard all these from writers the last few weeks.

Also in ESPN's Power Rankings they have Philly, Mets, and Braves ahead of us in EVERY Power Ranking so far this year even though we have lead the division most of the season so far....

A little respect. Who f'in cares what ESPN thinks anyways. Get over it.

hes making it seem catastrophic that we are being outscored for the year - its only 2 runs!

every analyst also goes on and on at how bad the pitching is, yet we have given up fewer runs than the AL West leading Angels, and only 3 more then the AL East leading Red Sox

and do i hear them getting criticised...didnt think so

Traditionally those numbers don't bode well. The pitching looks like it's coming around, which would do a lot to erase those kinds of feelings and make the Marlins a legit contender. Also, it's a young team and young teams have a tendency to flounder when they get ahead. Hopefully the make up of this team will prevent that.

Personally, I don't think they can do it because I'm not sold on the starting pitching. I'm just going to sit back and enjoy the ride though.

Yeah, ESPN can go choke on someones balls for all I care. I know power rankings are very subjective but it is getting kind of rediculous to be behind all the team in our division even though WE ARE IN FIRST PLACE. I know it may not last for a while but at least give us respect when we have earned it.

We've lost once by 13 runs and once by 12 runs. That's a net loss of 25 runs.

We haven't won any games by more than 7 runs.

That explains why our run differential is -2. You can't ignore those lopsided losses, but chances are pretty good that eventually we will win by 12-13 runs a few times, too.

I saw some pretty noticeable improvements in Miller and Badenhop in their last starts, so I have reason to believe that they're finally turning things around (the success of Olsen and Hendrickson must have lit a fire under their collective ass). I'm also loving Uggla in the five or six spot, and I'm praying that Fredi sees the light and keeps him there when Willingham comes back. Regardless of the season's outcome, I've had a great time watching the Fish prove everyone wrong thus far. Good times.

I hate the fact that, all of these reporters are going back to the whole "Marlins are getting outscored arguement." That's only because they have had a couple of games where they just didn't show up. What gets teams to October is the close games, and so far the Marlins own those. They defintetly have to buy if they keep this up, which I think they will. Some guys they could look at are (I'm assuming these teams will be out of the race): Bronson Arroyo, Livan Hernandez, Tim Redding, and Javier Vazquez.
