I'll be honest, I used to be one of those people that didn't give hockey a chance, but that changed when I went to a Panthers/'Canes game a while back, had a great time and found my Penguins roots about... 5 years ago...

"most" have never watched a game, let alone been to one. that's what makes it so frustrating to hockey fans. it's not a traditional sport in the southern markets like basketball or baseball or football which everyone grows up with and learns from childhood. most americans (aside from the northern markets) did not grow up with hockey as a child, so they don't know about it. why do you think in markets up north. the hockey team is just as-if not more popular than the rival sports in that city? the nfl is king everywhere, but the wings are bigger than the pistons, wild over the t-wolves, penguins over the pirates, flyers over the sixers, etc. etc. people grow up with those teams and with the sport so they have history and tradition. the "expansion" markets have yet to build tradition so you still have plenty of ignorance floating around. whatever, the whole anti-hockey attitude is changing and quickly. within the next decade i'd be willing to bet that the nhl is more popular than the nba. it already would be had gary bettman not torn it to shreds after the 94 season.

They say once you go to a Hockey game, you become an instant fan. it couldn't be anymore true. put it this way - i'm a Panthers season ticket holder and have been for a while. i can't watch our games on TV anymore as it just feels as if i'm missing out. it's not the same on TV. at all. i still obviously watch the sport on TV as I'm a diehard, but it's waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyy better in person.

A little reading comprehension goes a long way and just because I don't like it doesn't mean i'm "anti-hockey." i read it. saying you've watched a game doesn't neccessarily mean you understand it. and by understanding the sport i don't mean the rules. everyone knows the puprose of the game is to put the puck in the net, most know what offsides is, icing, etc. what makes baseball so great? plenty, PLENTY of people hate baseball because it's "too slow". but those people don't understand that the game can change every single pitch. every time a pitcher winds up, the game can change with one swing. it's no different in hockey. every time a team rushes up the ice the entire game can change. it isn't like soccer (and i'm a big soccer fan, mind you, not trying to rip the sport) where you need precise scoring chances to get a goal. most goals are "garbage goals" meaning they can come from anywhere at anytime. that simple fact puts you on the edge of your seat every second of every game. when the other team has the puck in your teams zone, you're a ball of nerves. when your guys have the puck, you're dying to jump out of your seat and scream as the puck hits the back of the mesh. the problem is for the noobies like you, or just the totally ignorant (i'll give you the benefit of the doubt..) if you dont "feel" that on TV. when you're in the arena you hear the entire crowd react to a shot with a load "oohhh" as a shot wizzes by the net, or the crowd start cheering loudly as the home team starts breaking up ice on the rush. or best yet, when you score, theres no better live reaction in sports to a goal. it's like hitting a walk-off HR every time the puck goes in. the place erupts. it's just special. if you go to the game you'll start to realize that the importance of everything that goes on magnifies, just like in a baseball game. things that seem meaningless and boring on TV suddenly change because the atmosphere around you. i too used to be one of the "ignorant". I was all football and baseball, all the time. now? i'm a full time season ticket holder to the panthers for the last 5 years. it's my favorite sport, pretty easily too. I love baseball, i love football, i love soccer. but hockey is just different. almost an obsession.

This argument is extremely weak, the fan bases are "stronger" because the teams are proven to win more Wings have a crap load of championships > Pistons having 1 in however many years Wild > T'Wolves because the Wolves pretty much suck Penguins > Pirates, same reason... I'll guarantee you this though, if they put a product on the field that has a chance at that division, Pittsburgh fans will come back in droves, they've been legitimately cheated this past decade by HORRIBLE team management Flyers > Sixers, same as above
