If you watch games on MLB.TV, you often get to see how bad other teams announcers are. I didn't appreciate Tommy and Rich as much until I started watching games online. Living in New England I also see the NESN guys doing the Red Sox games all the time and I can't stand them. I like guys that are knowledgeable and fair. They don't have to be impartial but at least objective. I think Tommy and Rich are.

 

I have MLB.TV for work (yes I am a corporate time stealer :thumbup ) and MLB Extra Innings at home on the DirecTV.

 

I would rank our guys right up there with any of the teams on TV. I also like the Arizona guys. Mark Grace is a hoot with great stories & just a funny personality. Seattle also has 1st rate announcers, starting with the legendary Dave Niehaus. His voice is distinctive and worthy of his newly won place in Cooperstown.

I don't care if Rich and Tommy are the best or not, I love the job they do and would not want to have things be any different. To me, Tommy is as familiar as a friend, he puts things frankly and is passionate about the team. Rich provides an atmosphere of fun that makes watching the Marlins fun. I like the Cubs WGN announcers, but nearly every other team broadcast crew is pretty horrid (especially the White Sox, Braves, and Rays).

Rich is OK, Tommy is the fun guy.

I was recently reading on wikipedia (yes, its reliable) that Craig Minervini used to do wrestling (WWF I believe) interviews and XFL play-by-play calls. Just thought I'd share that.

 

He also does the IFL and the Panthers.

Does anyone remember Tommy Hutton and Joe Angel... that was a nice duo, personally my favorite. (And the Marlins are in the *WIN* column"- Joe Angel. Tommy and Rich are awesome though.

Joe Angel and Dave O'Brien. That was the best pair of announcers you will ever hear. We were very lucky to have them together on the radio for several years. Then they had some sort of fight and they both left the Marlins. At the end they wouldn't even talk to each other and they had to be separated. One did the 1st half of the game on the radio, the other on TV, they then would switch after the middle of the 4th inning.

 

Milo Hamilton Sr. did the Braves games on the radio in the late 1960's. He was fantastic.

Another MLB.TVer here (no other choice as I live in England). Thank God the Mariners series is over as the commentators were REALLY bad. We apparently have players called Hermidia and Amyzarga.

I was watching them on Tuesday and they didn't seem too bad. Sure, the butchered a few names, but it's gotta be hard with players they have never seen before.

 

Also, that Hermidia mistake happens alot, for some reason.

I love Rich and Tommy but hate it when Tommy sometimes goes on and on about attendance.

 

And Craig... blah. He once interviewed me evene though I said I wasn't up for it.

 

I like it when Tommy goes on about that. It's true and he's trying to get attendance up. Better than closing our eyes and ears and pretending it isn't happening, only to complain every time someone brings it up.

 

Craig?? I simply told him no. In no uncertain terms. Even said to send Frank over and I would talk to him. Recently he even complained about the kids in the parades in Philly (I think). Called them camera hogs. Little kids!!! What a hypocrit. And last night on the fish catching story he came up with another one. He said he used to think those guys were great, but he caught the first one. I was really hoping he would catch that fish with his face. But in order to do that the fish would have to hit him just under belt level.

I do miss "and the Marlins are in the win column!" Rich has no trademark except looking at Tommy Hutton with a real creepy look during pregame.

For those MLB.TVers, is anyone else thoroughly fed up now with the "Hi, this is Victor Martinez..." and "Hi, this is John Main..." inserts repeated ad infinitum? Can they not get some new ones (I keep screaming "THROW A ****ING STRIKE THEN!" whenever Kevin Gregg tells me to "Keep watching") ?

 

At least they've dropped the Manny Ramirez 500/Ken Griffey Jr 600 ones, although they kept them going two weeks after both targets had been reached.

 

Bring back the Yankees bobble-head!

maybe ten years ago, but Vin now is just boring & old, and often repeats the same stories 2 or 3 days in a row, and once last year I heard him tell one story twice in the same game.

 

He is a legend, but must be at least 85 years old. There is a time to retire, even for Vin Scully. :thumbup

Trust me, he is worth staying up late to listen to. If the game is a blowout, you still keep the game on, because he will entertain.

Oh Dwayne Stats is not that bad, but Joe Magraine is putrid. Tampa needs to seriously think about updating their color announcer.

Perfectly said. Tommy and Rich are just such an easy listen and jack it up when appropriate. I really enjoy them. Personally, I was never a Joe Angel fan, although I didn't dislike him-a real professional. I can never forget the totally anticlimatic call on Renteria's hit in game 7-just bad, I always wished that it was Davey's inning to call. DVH was not much better on the final out in 03, but the play itself in 97 was set up for a much more exciting call. Hey, Costas call in 97 was also terrible-like he was disappointed the Marlins won-but that is a different topic. Fortunately, I was at both games so I listened to all of this post game.
