With Josh Johnson coming off the 60-day disabled list on Thursday to make his first start of the season that day, the club is adding what it hopes is a front-line starting pitcher. Johnson will pitch the first game of the series at the Dodgers, and 21-year-old Chris Volstad, promoted from Double-A on Sunday, will make his first big league start on Friday. The additions of Johnson, who returns from Tommy John ligament replacement surgery to his right elbow, and Volstad shakes up the rotation. The bullpen, which has been heavily used, now has a power arm in 21-year-old Ryan Tucker, who is going from being a starter to a reliever. "We're going to continue to look and evaluate the 'pen. It's been revamped. We'll see how it performs," Marlins president of baseball operations Admin Beinfest said. "It doesn't mean how active we are. It's the time of the year where you're on the phone. You don't want to be left out. You're checking things out. "In our case, we're going to have a little bit of a new look. We're energized, I think, with J.J. coming back. I think Tucker can help us out in the 'pen." The bullpen also includes left-hander Mark Hendrickson, who is being switched to a long relief role. When Johnson is activated before Thursday's game, the Marlins will have to make a 25-man roster move. The odd man out could be Hendrickson, should the team decide to designate him for assignment. The Marlins also may consider keeping 13 pitchers, which means going with 12 position players. Right now the club is at 12 pitchers. The Marlins are actively exploring catching help. With Matt Treanor going on the disabled list on Tuesday, John Baker was promoted from Triple-A Albuquerque. Paul Hoover and Baker will split duties behind the plate. "With our given situation, generally catching is difficult, like pitching, to find," Beinfest said. Even though Hoover has limited Major League experience and Baker has none, the two were with the club in Spring Training, so they have a familiarity with the pitching staff. July 9, 200818 yr Hendricks should not be the odd man out because he is a decent bullpen guy with trade value. If anything, we should send one of the younger guys down to work on throwing strikes.

Rabelo still owes him dinner for what he did to him in Oakland.
