July 23, 200818 yr You could do this for about $43 million: Treanor - 1.0 Cantu - 3.5 Uggla - 8.0 Hanley - 5.5 Dallas - 0.8 Hammer - 3.5 Cody - 2.5 Hermida - 2.5 Ricky - 3.0 Scott - 3.0 Josh - 2.5 Anibal - 0.4 Cheap veteran - 1.0 Cheap veteran - 1.0 Minimum wage (11 players) - 4.4 Hanley is our franchise player, imo. Why should Uggla get more per year? I agree play with the numbers a little, but you can have a good team for pretty cheap
July 23, 200818 yr Because Uggla should be able to get more in arby than the $5.5 million Hanley agreed to in his contract.
July 23, 200818 yr Jacobs - Bye Willingham - Bye (before that back gives out) Olsen - Bye Helms - Bye Gregg - Bye Hendrickson - Bye
July 23, 200818 yr Author Is 8m a little much for Uggla? I mean, Miggie didn't make that the first time he hit Arbi. Howard made 10m last season, and with Cabs, he made 7.4m...and 2B is a more offensive scarce posistion, plus inflation.

Listen, he's had a great year, but as I've said, coming into the 2nd half, his OPS was 160+ points higher than it was all of last year. I'd say, at least, wait and see what he does in the 2nd half, before giving him that contract.
July 23, 200818 yr Author You can't offer the guy arbitration until the offseason. You can't do midseason arbitrations. And assuming he stays at .950+ OPS, when you can have a guy coming off a .950+ OPS year and you only have to commit for one year, you do that and don't think twice.

August 1, 200818 yr I gave it my own shot. I put together a 2009 roster for $26.35 million. Please let me know if my estimated numbers are off: SP Josh Johnson 2.5m (this is me hoping they keep at least 1 of Olsen/Ricky/JJ) SP Anibal Sanchez 400k SP Chris Volstad 400k SP Andrew Miller 1.35m SP Ryan Tucker 400k ST competition: Sinkbeil, Badenhop, De La Cruz, Trahern, RVH, Thompson C John Baker 400k 1B Gaby Sanchez 400k 2B Chris Coghlan 400k SS Hanley Ramirez 5.5m 3B Dallas McPherson 1m LF Josh Willingham 3.5m CF Cameron Maybin 400k RF Jeremy Hermida 3m RP Matt Lindstrom 400k RP Renyel Pinto 400k RP Logan Kensing 750k RP Joe Nelson 750k RP [prospect] 400k RP [prospect] 400k RP [prospect] 400k BN Robert Andino 400k BN Brett Carroll 400k BN Brett Hayes 400k BN [veteran] 1m BN [veteran] 1m ARB-ELIGIBLE PLAYERS THEY CAN TRADE AWAY FOR OTHER YOUNG PIECES: 2B Dan Uggla 5m? 1B Mike Jacobs 3m 3B Jorge Cantu 4m SP Ricky Nolasco 3m SP Scott Olsen 2-3m OF Cody Ross 2m RP Kevin Gregg 3.5m UT Alfredo Amezaga 2m C Matt Treanor 1m RP Doug Waechter 1m RP Taylor Tankersley 1m RP Justin Miller 1.25m IF Wes Helms 3.75m (under contract- tradable??) August 2, 200818 yr I dont think Gaby Sanchez will be the starting 1B-or on the roster at all-but we will have to wait and see on that...his bat just isnt good enough to play there, and his defense is atrocious everywhere including 1B. Tucker will be converted to bullpen IMO. McPherson will likely be gone. I think Raynor replaces Hammer, and either Hammer is moved, or Jacobs moves and Hammer moves to 1B. And I fully expect Nolasco to be back for one more season. Need to give Sanchez more than one start, there is no telling how his shoulder will hold up.
August 2, 200818 yr i think that everyone is staying except 5 players. rhodes and gonzalez are going because they're too old. hendrickson isn't resigned because........well he sucks. and i think that jacobs is traded this season for a catcher and willingham is moved to 1st. finally mcpherson is let go because with willingham at 1st and cantu at 3rd there really is no place on the team for him.
August 2, 200818 yr We need to move Jacobs and Willingham in the off season and acquire a legitimate 3B if none of the youngsters look to pan out.
August 2, 200818 yr We need to move Jacobs and Willingham in the off season and acquire a legitimate 3B if none of the youngsters look to pan out. personally i think one of them needs to be moved this season for a catcher during the waiver wire. the other should be moved to get a legitamate leftfielder that isn't as slow as a turtle...cough....cough....willingham. i think that mcpherson has a really good chance of being a good third baseman, i hope the marlins give the guy a chance.

Need to give Sanchez more than one start, there is no telling how his shoulder will hold up. - I don't doubt you know more than me on the prospects, as all I know is the numbers. Sanchez is hitting .329 with a .418OBP at Carolina, and has been a good hitter throughout his pro career. He was the Marlins #5 prospect before the 2007 season and was deemed our "Best Hitter for Avg," "Best Power Hitter," and "Best Strike-Zone Discipline." Before 2008, he was our #10 prospect. Do you think he is not a part of this team's immediate future? - I think Tucker will be okay, but we'll see. - Why will McPherson be gone? He's arb-eligible, so he can't go anywhere, and so long as we can sign him for $1m or slightly less, I think he's great value. - I'm cool with Hammer moving to first, but is Raynor really a better fit than Sanchez? - If they keep Nolasco, I imagine they'd trade JJ then. Keeping JJ, Ricky and Olsen seems unlikely given the depth at SP, as well as the fact the three combined will likely total near $10m.

I don't think your vision fits in to the Marlins' way of doing things to be honest. I don't think they want to spend the kind of money to keep all these arbitration eligible players together.

At the very least he'll give a good BA, a huge OBP, and a good enough SLG for a ~.800 OPS. And if he continues to hit doubles like he is, it'll be a .850-.900+ OPS. And if those doubles turn into HRs as he enters his prime......... But at the very least you're getting a ~.800 OPS. If we dont' get rid of two of Jake, Dallas, and Cantu, I wouldn't be surprised if Dallas becomes the Helms/Boone player for next years team (or if Dallas beats Cantu out in ST, Cantu becoming that person).

Lets get Bonds! Lol. Hammer more than holds his own in LF. I'd even say he's slightly greater than average... Jacobs, on the other hand, is just pathetic, and an above average 1B would save this pitching staff a lot of outs and runs, and would save Hanley and Cantu a lot of errors.

August 2, 200818 yr Author - I'm cool with Hammer moving to first, but is Raynor really a better fit than Sanchez? I'm personally hoping to trade hammer this offseason and put Raynor at LF. I love love LOVE Hammer but his back is a ticking time bomb, sell him before he explodes.
August 2, 200818 yr Author Also Penn, although we could do it, I do doubt we sell that much. Expecially pitching. And expecially if we make the playoffs (hello playoff revenue)

I love love LOVE Hammer but his back is a ticking time bomb, sell him before he explodes. I respect that opinion, and I too LOVE Hammer as a hitter. Raynor and Sanchez will probably both get shots at the team next year, and the one that wins it may in fact dictate where Hammer (if he remains) will play in 2009. To be honest, I say we just put Hammer on an offseason workout routine. Losing 20 pounds would do wonders for his back, in my completely uneducated and speculative opinion, haha.
August 2, 200818 yr Also Penn, although we could do it, I do doubt we sell that much. Expecially pitching. And expecially if we make the playoffs (hello playoff revenue) I hope you're right. I'm going off their previous track record and their need to "match payroll to revenue." I'm just working off the assumption that they want to keep it at $20-$25m range again. Keeping Nolasco, JJ, Cantu and Olsen would be great.

They even added Delgado in 05. I doubt we will tear this team apart when we get closer with every moment.

Even just that would make a HUGE difference in this team.
