August 2, 200818 yr Also Penn, although we could do it, I do doubt we sell that much. Expecially pitching. And expecially if we make the playoffs (hello playoff revenue) I hope you're right. I'm going off their previous track record and their need to "match payroll to revenue." I'm just working off the assumption that they want to keep it at $20-$25m range again. Keeping Nolasco, JJ, Cantu and Olsen would be great. They usually give the team a good chance to win before they pull it apart. They let the 03 team try again twice, 04 and 05. They even added Delgado in 05. I doubt we will tear this team apart when we get closer with every moment. That's a good point. I hope they can find it in them to expand to $50m or so. Even just that would make a HUGE difference in this team. The Marlins can certainly afford it. The Rays had worse attendance and TV ratings than the fish last season but still have a payroll of about $43 million this year.
August 2, 200818 yr I highly doubt Loria will expand payroll beyond what it currently is, give or take a few million.
August 2, 200818 yr I dont think Gaby Sanchez will be the starting 1B-or on the roster at all-but we will have to wait and see on that...his bat just isnt good enough to play there, and his defense is atrocious everywhere including 1B. Tucker will be converted to bullpen IMO. McPherson will likely be gone. I think Raynor replaces Hammer, and either Hammer is moved, or Jacobs moves and Hammer moves to 1B. And I fully expect Nolasco to be back for one more season. Need to give Sanchez more than one start, there is no telling how his shoulder will hold up. - I don't doubt you know more than me on the prospects, as all I know is the numbers. Sanchez is hitting .329 with a .418OBP at Carolina, and has been a good hitter throughout his pro career. He was the Marlins #5 prospect before the 2007 season and was deemed our "Best Hitter for Avg," "Best Power Hitter," and "Best Strike-Zone Discipline." Before 2008, he was our #10 prospect. Do you think he is not a part of this team's immediate future? No, I dont. The only position he is even passable at defensively is 1B, and he is awful there too. His bat also isnt good enough for 1B. He has also been too old for every level. Raynor is a LF/CF who will give you maybe one or two fewer HRs but more triples and alot more stolen bases. Raynor can also play defense. Raynor skipped Jupiter, a level Gaby struggled at. I would love to trade Gaby Sanchez while he has value as a prospect now, before he fails hard at the highest level. He is an average bat whos lack of anything resembling defensive ability makes him a player without a position.

I think defense is something that needs to be improved upon greatly, so another below average defensive first baseman doesn't interest me. Perhaps if Cantu is somehow re-signed he can work at first- what we've seen so far has been good. A savvy business move at this point may be luring Perry Hill out of retirement to work intensely with these infielders.

Agreed, the marlins can afford with their current revenues a 45 million dollar payroll , that said i think everything hinges upon resolution of the stadium . I would not be opposed to getting rid of some of the current players . If we dont make the playoffs I think it would be smart to alter the team to make it a more balanced team offensively and defensively.

August 2, 200818 yr We have 12 players, 11 of which are on the 25-man, set to hit arbitration this offseason.

August 2, 200818 yr Author yeah Dallas. But you're also missing Kensing, making 18 Even though he's down, he only needed 49 days of service time to click over to 3 years. And even if he didn't hit those 49 days (although I'm rather sure he's been up for more than that), he'd hit super 2 status.

PS: Your Still a Gaby Hater Errors and fielding percentage are useless metrics, you cant paint the picture that anyone is good defensively using that. I will take what actual scouts and people that have actually seen him play have said that he is horrible with the glove no matter where he is at. Mike Stanton might grow out of RF and a move to 1B will be necessary, and Logan Morrison is currently our 1B of the future, and is outperforming what Gaby Sanchez did at Jupiter(yet another level where he was too old for) while being 4 years younger. Not a hater, Sanchez is just a very overrated prospect. Being awful with the glove and putting up either average or slightly better #s at levels below where you should be is not impressive.
August 2, 200818 yr The age thing is just because he went to college. His progress has been steady and he's hit at every level- a year at Jamestown, a year at Greensboro, a year at Jupiter and now at Carolina.
August 2, 200818 yr Author I was looking at his splits last night and I am disturbed by his low power numbers against RHP. His ISO is considerably low. I mean, 99% of the time a RHB's power numbers are going to be higher against LHP than RHP. But his RHP power numbers are just really low. But still, when you have more minor league walks than strikeouts, you're doing well. He's by no means a Logan but I think he'll be a solid MLB bat, giving atleast avg and obp
August 2, 200818 yr I keep asking myself "why" (aside from a core of players I think we can agree on) we'd want to keep this team together in 2009?

August 2, 200818 yr Author I keep asking myself "why" (aside from a core of players I think we can agree on) we'd want to keep this team together in 2009? Outside the like of Jacobs, an OFer, the C situation (the only place I expect us to be active in in the FA market), Gregg ($$$), and Olsen, who don't you want back here? And I mean, those are the players that need to be gone simply to keep the core. The core itself is going to cost over 30m, then it comes down to being able to fill out the rest of the roster cheaply. And you can't do that (cheapness) in FA, and there are areas we can't do that through our system (catcher, bullpen). We can still keep a good cheap bullpen with only losing Gregg, and it seems the only thing we can do about catcher is through FA (or, ofcoarse, a trade). We do not currently have the arms to put togeather a bullpen in our minors IMO. I reallly do not want a 2006 situation all over again. I mean, we do have a couple arms (DLC, Tucker) that very well could be ready by opening day next season, but you're also looking at them taking the places of Hendrickson and Gregg. Now ofcoarse there are expandable players outside of what I mentioned above that aren't part of the core and we have replacements for so we can part with them (A second OFer, one or even both of Cantu and Dallas [although Dallas will be so cheap, he should at worst get the Helms/Boone 1B/3B bench job], a second or possibly even a third SP), but the only reason to get rid of those players would be if we need the money, not because they're not producing.
August 2, 200818 yr How about signing Pudge, again? He will be 37 next year...give him a contract, and let him retire, as a Marlin. I think the only position we really have a problem with is catcher. Not really worried about much else; even if we lose some players, we can replace them through our farm system, imo.
August 2, 200818 yr Author I expect us to go after Pudge, and if we don't get him, going after the David Rosses of the world who we've shown interest in this past seadline. Keep in mind Pudge is still going to be the best FA catcher on the market (well, most likely anyway, I'm too lazy to double check the numbers) and will probably want 2 years

Hermida will be the RF'er, and I think he'll only get better as he gets older (as most players who haven't reached their prime do). I hope Cantu stays next year; preferrably as a 1B, though. Will McPherson ever get a shot for what it's worth? Would it be terrible to see him competing (at least) for the 3B job next Spring Training?
