September 19, 200817 yr If I recall, Miggy wanted 24 and had to "earn it" according to Tony since 24 was his number. I just saw Maybin is wearing 24 did he just get a pass? I mean, Miggy had to earn it. Does anyone know any details about this?
September 19, 200817 yr wow you guys will start conversations about anything these days If you don't wish to discuss the topic at hand, then simply do not post anything... Anyway, I'm not very sure on that, sdg. It would make for a good e-mail tuesday question tough :thumbup

After that season, Perez said Cabrera had earned it, thus he started the 2004 season with #24. I dont know about the number in Maybin's case. My best guess is that Perez has had a new number since he gave 24 away like 4 years ago and Maybin picked it because it was available.

He kept wearing 24, even after he "let" Miggie wear it. Perez, and Dawson as well, aren't on the player or coaching rosters, so they don't actually get assigned jersey numbers. They are just allowed to wear jerseys as a courtesy from the organization. That said, I don't see why anyone should have to "earn" #24 since Tony never played for us and only managed in one crappy season. It bothers me way more to see Kensing wearing #19 than it does Maybin not "earning" a number from a guy who isn't ever though of in association with the Marlins.
September 19, 200817 yr 24 has always been my favorite and lucky number. I also have something for 24. Probably because it was Miguel Cabrera's number here and cos Cadillac Williams of the Buccs wears it.
September 19, 200817 yr But Perez is a hall of famer, so there's nothing wrong with respecting him in that regard.
September 19, 200817 yr My guess is that Tony didn't have a problem with it since Maybin was wearing that number in spring. If Tony did have a problem with a player earning it I think the Marlins would have honored that. Good to see Maybin honoring Griffey who wore it to honor Willie Mays and couldn't wear it in Cincy because of Tony.
September 19, 200817 yr Come to think of it. Its pretty weird that we have a couple of hall of fame caliber guys in Tony Perez and Andre Dawson working in our front office. I doubt this is the case for most organizations.
