Hey guys, Brewer fan here. Just curious about this because I remember seeing a Marlins fan complaining about how much Mike Jacobs sucks not that long ago. I checked it out and yeah, his OBP is terrible. Seems like an all power type hitter.

 

Fielder is kind of stereotyped as being that same kind, but in reality he's a great singles and doubles hitter in addition to his power.

 

A rumor about Fielder has been him and possibly others getting traded for Matt Cain this offseason. It won't happen, and I don't think I want it to.

 

I was just wondering, how would you guys feel about the Marlins acquiring Fielder from us, presumably in a deal involving Nolasco or Volstad (I don't know a lot about your pitchers I'm just assuming those two are your best younger ones).

 

He used to live in Florida for a long time too so that would get him some points with the fans.

Well, It would never happen...but I wouldn't trade Volstad for A Rod or Pujols--ok maybe that's exaggerating a little lol...but I am really high on the kid. Plus, Volstad is a hometown kid himself.

I don't think I'm underestimating Prince, but we really don't need another power hitter.

 

Plus, I think you are underestimating Volstad and Nolasco. Noly is having a ridiculous year, 10th in Wins, 8th in W-L%, 2nd in WHIP, 3rd in BB/9, 10 in Ks, 2nd in K/BB. All in a year that he started slow in because he was recovering from injury.

 

Volstad is a huge prospect and it slated to eventually be our ace over Nolasco and fellow top prospect Andrew Miller.

 

Prince, playing 1st base, just doesn't have the value to make the trade for either of them equal.

for prince? Hell no! lol sorry. the marlins are focusing on pitching and defense again next season, hopefully. we have enough power on the team....and i rather have our rotation how it is.

I made a thread regarding Fielder a couple of months ago and got ridiculed about it by some.

 

But no way would I part with Nolasco or Volstad for him. Nolasco has shown the country he has great stuff. Volstad hasnt received much national coverage as of yet but this will change in 2009. He has already shown all in South Florida that he has fantastic composure and the ability to be a future ace.

It all comes down to power hitting 1st baseman not having the value that they used to. Especially in a lineup like ours.

I guess so. I honestly think though that Fielder is the best hitter on our team, and a better overall one than most power-hitting first basemen that have played. And he's clutch. He carried our offense for a few games on this current streak.

 

But you're right in saying power is not something that the Marlins need more of right now.

So the general consensus is we wouldnt want Fielder if we had to give up a young arm.

 

Now I know this would never happen cos he has a big contract with the Brewers, but just for discussion purposes, would anyone give up one of those arms if we got Ryan Braun in return, and got him signed to a long term contract with the Marlins. Would be able to take over from Willingham in LF and also able to occasionally fill in at 3B.

 

Once again, I know this would never happen.

Obviously can't answer that from an Fish fan's perspective but from mine I would never want to give up Braun for Nolasco or Volstad...No disrespect to their talent levels, there's no pitcher I'd give up Braun for short of someone who is already an ace in the MLB. Not just cause he's an amazing hitter but because he's a great guy and someone the franchise badly needs. Any team in the league would be lucky to have him.

Ricky is already an ace in the MLB. He doesn't get alot of hype because he's a fish, but look up his numbers, look at his gamelogs, watch the highlights of his games on MLB.com. He's an ace, he's got the stuff. He's also got the 2nd best WHIP in the league.

 

Plus, he doesn't walk people. He's walked 3 batters in 27.2 innings this month. He walked 4 batters in 43 innings last month. He's only walked 11 batters since the break in 82 innings.

Seriously, Ricky is Cy Young caliber. I just implore you to look him up. If he was on any other team, he'd get talk.

Dont get me wrong, Gallardo is an excellent young pitcher, however at this present time Nolasco is a more established major leaguer so I would have him slightly above him.

Voldstad and Nolasco have done an excellent job, there is just no way I would give that up for Prince Fielder.

 

Plus 1B is the last position we need to look at. We have Gaby Sanchez or Jorge Cantu, or others that can step in and take the position within the organization.

You sure need Gallardo to develop into an ace with Sabathia gone for next year and chances are Sheets will be gone also. What teams are pursuing Sheets the most?

Lance Berkman took Sheets out to dinner when we were in Houston to try and woo him over there. My guess is either them, the Rangers or Dodgers if they don't get CC.

 

Personally, I do not want Sheets back. Notice how he didn't go near full a season after 2004 up until this year? That's cause it's a contract year, and he finally toughed it out with his little girly injuries so he could get a big pay day this off-season. Guy is a joke, really. His own teammates have called him out for his sitting out with minor injuries.

 

Whatever team gives him a big contract is shooting themselves in the foot.

 

CC on the other hand will be worth every penny he gets. He's the best in the MLB in my opinion.

An Oswalt-Sheets 1-2 punch would be sick. I dont see the Rangers going after him cos when was the last time they had a good pitcher. No doubt the Yankees will be linked to him.

See, that's the issue. Gallardo has ton of upside, but has never been in the top 10 in wins, top 5 in WHIP, top 5 in BB/9, top 5 in K/BB. Gallardo hasn't reached where Ricky is. Also, don't forget that Ricky missed most of 07.

I wouldn't want Fielder because he doesn't fill a need, and would not prosper in our park. Cantu would do a fine job at 1B.
