October 24, 200817 yr lol, why did you feel the need to bring up Hermida in this thread? It has nothing to do with him As for the reason I am saying he is a bad influence, Barry Bonds is a "me" kind of player, he has even admitted to that on several occasions. The younger players on our team may see that, and think that is how i can make it big, is to stop being a team player. Or players like Maybin may want to help out our team, and think talking to Bonds is his way to learning the ins and outs of baseball. Do you really think Bonds will say anything constructive to them? Another major reason why we would not want Bonds here is his defense. Of course he would go into LF. We already have a terrible defense, and Beinfest has said his major priority is to strengthen our defense going into next year, how would bringing in Barry Bonds fit into this plan?

Or players like Maybin may want to help out our team, and think talking to Bonds is his way to learning the ins and outs of baseball. Do you really think Bonds will say anything constructive to them? Why not? Have you ever met the guy? I mean geez, the guy is a second generation ball player who has produced at an all-star level into his 40s, do you think maybe he does know something about baseball that could potentially help younger players? Even if he has no positive contributions to make in the locker room (which I think is an unfair assumption to make), I don't see how that would outweigh his likely contributions at the plate. I mean what exactly do you think he's gonna say to a guy that's gonna hurt the team? "don't run down fly balls, take your time"? "don't throw too hard"? I'm serious about this question - how exactly is he gonna suddenly screw up our young talent? Another major reason why we would not want Bonds here is his defense. Of course he would go into LF. We already have a terrible defense, and Beinfest has said his major priority is to strengthen our defense going into next year, how would bringing in Barry Bonds fit into this plan? I think he would fit into that plan because an improved defense all around the rest of the field would limit the impact of Barry's defensive limitations while still benefitting from the big offensive production.
October 24, 200817 yr He can just bring bad vibes into the clubhouse. He is a confrontational player, and would take attention away from the team and lead to constant media nuisance. Obviously Bonds wouldn't say stuff like "don't run out that fly ball". He would say stuff along the lines of "You know, I know a guy who can get you 'stuff' that will help you improve you're swing if you understand me" He can get a lot of players into some trouble if unguarded. There are many positives that can come from bringing in Bonds, mainly the high OBP due to the high # of intentional walks, but the possible issues that may come along far outweigh the possible gains of bringing in Bonds
October 24, 200817 yr A career .985 .OPS against lefties says that Barry Bonds would not be a platoon partner. He'd just need his Sunday's off. Cody Ross' .969 OPS against lefties the last three years ain't too shabby... Bonds' is .981 during his last three seasons played, but can you really expect that from a 44-year-old who hasn't played in a year?
October 24, 200817 yr Barry is, at worst, slightly below average in LF. Rambo is right that Barry will likely never play in the majors again. Not just because of the ("allegedly") collusion, but also because of the whole going on trial in (march?) thing.

It's even more ridiculous considering the same people saying "no because he's a bad teammates" are the some of the same people who wanted Manny Ramirez...at his salary, trading away 3 prospects.

October 24, 200817 yr And people who say Bonds is a good teammate most likely don't know the story behind Bonds. Try reading Game of Shadows, or Love me Hate me, then tell me Bonds is a good teammate. The guys who wrote those books have been covering Barry Bonds for years

It's a gamble, but sometimes taking that gamble pays off. Look at 2003, we traded away a future all-star first baseman (Adrian Gonzalez) for Ugueth Urbina. Who knows, without Urbina we might not have that '03 title to brag about. If we traded for Manny, who knows...we might have made the playoffs and heck, maybe we could have won the World Series. I'm not saying we should have made the trade for Manny, all I'm saying is that baseball is a game where you have to seize the opportunity to win. You never know if you are going to have that opportunity again. From what I can gather, you believe that we should never trade our prospects even if it means an opportunity to win a title--and I think that is wrong.

"He's such a good teammate for not hustling and purposely doing so b/c he was getting along with the organization!" Imagine if Bonds had actually hit his trainer...wow. Or, imagine if Bonds had actually beaten his wife (like current WS pitcher, Brett Myers...no publicity there, though). As far as Bonds and the steroid issue...you are aware that the "GREAT veteran leader" Luis Gonzalez likely took roids, as well, right? Along with a whole bunch of other players...too bad the media would have you believing otherwise b/c unlike the others, Bonds is a HOF'er with or without roids.

We have had many opportunities to trade prospects to get good players in return, yet don't do it because we are afraid to trade top prospects. When these players become top players, household names and are asking for a larger salary, such as a Miguel Cabrera, we trade them for more prospects. To me, this has been a never ending cycle for years with the marlins, I have been waiting for years for this to stop happening. I just hope that with a new stadium, a new philosphy regarding trading prospects comes along with it

How about this 1-5? 1. Maybin 2. Baker 3. Hanley 4. Bonds 5. Cantu You got a 5 tool player hitting 1st, a patient left-handed hitter hitting 2nd, a star hitting 3rd, one of the all-time greats hitting 4th (who would still be considered a great hitter if his .OPS DROPPED 100+ points!...at the league minimum, for one year!)...and a good situational hitter, hitting 5th. With one of the better pitching staffs in baseball.

You're making a lot of sense.
October 24, 200817 yr Manny said that he would've embraced a trade to Florida, that is the difference. I am not sure Bonds would be all to happy playing for the Marlins, Manny would've taken it as another paycheck. And that 2 month rental could've just given us title #3

I heard different reports on that. Also...signing a hitter like Barry Bonds (if I might add once again...for the league minimum, giving up ZERO prospects!) to protect Hanley Ramirez in the lineup might just give us "title #3," as well.
