December 17, 200816 yr It's mid December, give it some time. Free Agency overall is behind this year. Usually the way it works is all the big name FAs like CC, Tex, and K-Rod sign first, followed by the 2nd tier FAs (Burrell, Dunn, Abreu etc ), and lastly the lower FAs, which is who we will most likely go after. Trust me, moves WILL be made. We obviously need a platoon mate for Baker, plus a 4th outfielder. It'll happen eventually.

The Marlins (mostly) do not operate with that logic.
December 17, 200816 yr I remember in 2005 when we signed Leiter early and then didn't sign anyone else for a long time and everyone panicked. I'm not saying that were going to sign a guy like Delgado in early February but just be patient for god's sake. Unless you want to overpay for somebody you got to wait a bit.
December 18, 200816 yr Could they at least sign some guys to minor league deals so that we can have something to get excited about? Like a backup catcher or a 1B to battle Sanchez for at bats? I'm honestly not that upset they haven't done anything. 1- I don't think there is much out there that would warrant spending money 2- I look at what the Yankees have done and it seems so ridiculous to me, especially signing an injury-prone pitcher like Burnett to a 5 year contract. I think they're going to be in for a real shock when the recession really hits and they can't fill their stadium every night. I say we sit pat and make wise decisions. I honestly think we have a very good time going into '09

December 18, 200816 yr I wouldn't call it brainwashed. I'd say the team is thrifty considering it's budget limitations. OK, for arguments sake, lets say we go out for somebody. Who would you go for and how much are you willing to pay? Or overpay, which is what you would be doing now when everyone else is sitting back just like the Marlins. The market needs to settle. That is why the only teams actually signing people are big market teams right now. Should we have gone for CC? Or Burnett? Should we sign Texiera to platoon w/ Gaby? Or maybe Manny will take a one year, 2 million dollar offer? None of these scenarios are realistic right now. CC, Burnett, Tex, Manny, and Fuentes will be setting the tone for other teams/players to set their prices. Once these guys are gone, the next round of B type players will try to get their price. I doubt the Marlins will be in participating in this category either. Our team is pretty damn solid right now. Yes we have a few minor holes to fill. But give me one team that doesn't. It doesn't exist. I understand your concern, but we need to be patient.
December 18, 200816 yr In case you haven't noticed, free agency as a whole has been quiet. It's not likely to pick up again until after the new year. Hopefully there will be some good bargains. I think the price tag on some of the players we have been interested in, like Pudge perhaps, will drop. The top end guys will get their money, but given the state of the economy, I think more teams are going to take a Marlins-like approach and not give out a lot of long term contracts to average players.
December 18, 200816 yr Author I was wrong the Marlins have signed infielder Andy Gonzalez to a minor league deal. He has a career batting average of .188 in the majors with a OPS of .549.
December 18, 200816 yr Then I hope you are excited now. He should give Ramirez or Uggla competition for the starting job now.

December 18, 200816 yr i think that marlins will sign barrett to platoon with baker even though i think it's a bad idea. also i wouldn't mind seeing us trade for jody gerut of the padres who finally got healthy after his knee injuries and would bring speed and some pop as the 4th outfielder. although we'll have to wait for all the big name free agents to sign so we can get bargains on the lesser free agents

They would rather cut ties with reliable relievers because of 150 K. I was reading that 19 teams have contacted Nelson already. There I fixed it. As for the signings, YES I been telling you guys it was slow, but maybe Beinfest has Pud.......something up his sleeve....

I think the Marlins might be better off sifting through the junk pile and seeing if someone gets their career back on the right path for the right price.

The way the Marlins run their system is just as successful as some of the big market teams. With a limited budget they do the best they can, which is producing and developing many great young players. Nothing wrong with that, its the way they have always done business and it has worked very well so far. Now with increased revenue coming from the new stadium they can lock up a few established stars and continue developing new stars
