There's a good chance your favorite team has inquired on free agent reliever Joe Nelson. MLB.com's Joe Frisaro learned that Nelson's agent has received inquiries from 19 teams. A few teams have topped a $1MM in their offer. The known suitors: the Royals, Cardinals, Red Sox, Braves, Rays, and Mets. Nelson is hoping to sign before Christmas.

On Friday, the Marlins made the thrifty decision to non-tender Nelson, a positive development for the 34 year-old reliever. He hasn't ruled out the Marlins, but a return doesn't seem likely.

ONLY 19 teams?

ONLY 19 teams?

Well, not including the Marlins leaves only 29 teams, so 19 isn't that surprising. :whistle

Damn, good for him. Hope he can get a 2-year, $3 Mill deal somewhere.

Good for him. Whether he will ever repeat last year's performance or not (Most likely not), he still doesn't deserve to be non-tendered because of $150,000. He had a very successful year with the Marlins in '08, he deserves a reward for it.

Did it ever occur to anyone that the Marlins non-tendered him as a favor? Same thing they'd probably do for McPherson come late March if there isn't a trade market for him and he has no spot.

According to MLB.com, we actually gave in and offered him that $800,000 dollars he wanted. Apparently that wasn't enough anymore.

Well in that case, I don't feel so bad about it. He isn't really worth more than $800k.

I could name a fair amount of teams that would have paid $3 Mill to post the numbers he did last year.

If was was in his 20's, sure. But at his age, he'll probably end up getting $1M+ tops.

Too bad in his 20s he was posting 4+ ERAs in AA.

He better not go to the mets.

I could too. Only problem is the odds of him having numbers anywhere close to what he did last year are very high.

How would that be a problem?

a little over half the league, good for him.

Odds. The higher the odds, the less likely.

That is really good for Nelson. Many teams can afford a risk like the Mariners did with Beltre after the one year monster season, but we are the Marlins...

Odds mean the difference between something. I.E. the question "What are the odds?" High odds means likely, low odds means unlikely.

So saying that he has high odds to repeat what he did means that he is likely to repeat what he did.

Did you seriously just compare Adrian Beltre's monster season to Joe Nelson's "monster season?"

Well, Joe Nelson was 13th in ERA amongst all qualifying relievers. Not exactly Beltre's, but it's a pretty ridiculous season. While Beltre had a 163 OPS+, Nelson had a 208 ERA+.

That said, Beltre was 25 in his big season, and Nelson is 34.

Yeah... you mean the odds AGAINST him doing what he did last year

Well, I was thinking odds like in gambling, then. When the odds are low (like 2 to 1 or 3 to 1), the chances of you winning are high. When the odds are high (like 20-1, 50-1, 100-1, etc.) then your chances of winning are lower.

You have the phrasing wrong. I think you are thinking "long odds", not "high odds"

yeah, Puma, stop making odds references... just say "not likely" :lol
