Posted December 18, 200816 yr There's a good chance your favorite team has inquired on free agent reliever Joe Nelson. MLB.com's Joe Frisaro learned that Nelson's agent has received inquiries from 19 teams. A few teams have topped a $1MM in their offer. The known suitors: the Royals, Cardinals, Red Sox, Braves, Rays, and Mets. Nelson is hoping to sign before Christmas. On Friday, the Marlins made the thrifty decision to non-tender Nelson, a positive development for the 34 year-old reliever. He hasn't ruled out the Marlins, but a return doesn't seem likely. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2008/12/19-teams-intere.html
December 18, 200816 yr ONLY 19 teams? Well, not including the Marlins leaves only 29 teams, so 19 isn't that surprising. :whistle
December 18, 200816 yr Good for him. Whether he will ever repeat last year's performance or not (Most likely not), he still doesn't deserve to be non-tendered because of $150,000. He had a very successful year with the Marlins in '08, he deserves a reward for it.

Same thing they'd probably do for McPherson come late March if there isn't a trade market for him and he has no spot.

Apparently that wasn't enough anymore.

I could name a fair amount of teams that would have paid $3 Mill to post the numbers he did last year.

Too bad in his 20s he was posting 4+ ERAs in AA.

Only problem is the odds of him having numbers anywhere close to what he did last year are very high.

December 18, 200816 yr That is really good for Nelson. Many teams can afford a risk like the Mariners did with Beltre after the one year monster season, but we are the Marlins...
December 18, 200816 yr Odds mean the difference between something. I.E. the question "What are the odds?" High odds means likely, low odds means unlikely. So saying that he has high odds to repeat what he did means that he is likely to repeat what he did.
December 18, 200816 yr That is really good for Nelson. Many teams can afford a risk like the Mariners did with Beltre after the one year monster season, but we are the Marlins... Did you seriously just compare Adrian Beltre's monster season to Joe Nelson's "monster season?"

Did you seriously just compare Adrian Beltre's monster season to Joe Nelson's "monster season?" Well, Joe Nelson was 13th in ERA amongst all qualifying relievers. Not exactly Beltre's, but it's a pretty ridiculous season. While Beltre had a 163 OPS+, Nelson had a 208 ERA+. That said, Beltre was 25 in his big season, and Nelson is 34.

December 18, 200816 yr Well, I was thinking odds like in gambling, then. When the odds are low (like 2 to 1 or 3 to 1), the chances of you winning are high. When the odds are high (like 20-1, 50-1, 100-1, etc.) then your chances of winning are lower.
