If we offer him 3 years at 24-27 million, we're offering him a fair wage. If he doesn't take it, he doesn't take it. I don't care WHO it is, we're not in a situation to overpay for anyone.

If Pudge leaves, don't automatically blame the Marlins. If somebody offers him a stupid contract (like 5 years at $10 million per year) and all we do is offer him a fair wage (say 3 years at $8 million per year) and he leaves, you can't blame the team. It doesn't make sense to offer Pudge 5 years. It would hurt the team - we'd be similar to Texas and have all our money in one player. We all know how well that's worked for the Rangers.

 

If he does leave, I'm not saying that it's automatically Pudge's fault but try to be a little open-minded. It sounds like you're putting the entire onus on the front office. Pudge and his agent have a big part in this too. Right now, it sounds like Pudge is demanding more than we can afford (i.e. 5 years and $10 million per year) and will NOT give us a hometown discount (at least that's what his agent said).

 

So maybe instead of pleading with the Front Office to go sign Pudge no matter what it takes, you should be pleading with Pudge to take the offer the Front Office makes (if it's fair).

 

I was hoping that after some of the quotes from Pudge's agent the last couple of days, most fans wouldn't automatically hold it against the Front Office if Pudge leaves. I guess I was wrong and some people have already made up their mind.

If Marlins offer Pudge 24-27 Mill for 3 yrs and he rejects it....then i would agree with all of you.

 

But if they offer him 20 mill for 3 yrs....then that sends Fans a message.

i think it is more important worrying about Lowell, Lee and Castillo instead of JUST Pudge!

I know exactly how you feel. BELIEVE ME. I am going absolutely nutts hearing two different things. On the boards it's always "Pudge is staying"......"Pudge is out".....bla bla friggin' bla.

 

I made a guestbook for Pudge and I emailed it to him. I don't think that would help any, but the move didn't hurt.

 

People say that Pudge is being greedy, but I think it's his agent doing more of the talking here, so it's not just Pudge. Borass is an a**hole and I hope he chokes on a chicken bone! (Ok, not literally....but eh......yea whatever.)

 

Point is, you're not alone. I am sure that all, if not, most of Pudge's fans in Miami (and beyond) are going nutts over all the suspense. I don't know if Pudge is going to stay here or not (chances don't look too good, but you'll never know, right?), but I will tell you this, wherever he goes, he still has his biggest fan in Miami......me.

So, just hang in there. Whatever happens, I am sure it's for the best.

Just for a conspiracy theory: Anyone consider that by stating in public that Pudge will not give a hometown discount and is seeking a huge, long term deal Pudge is taking major pressure of our FO and will lighten the bashing it could recieve if our hero signs elsewhere? Ferral (sp) spilled the beans on his morning show when he told his listeners that he'd been called into a meeting to have it explained to him that there's no rocking the boat as far as the Dolphins were concerned, that the station was not going to allow anything detrimental to their corporate sponsors to occur and he'd better get in line.

 

The truth is the media generally depends on the Dolphins for a tremendous amount of revenue. The Dolphins use this to control the media. I've said before and I'll say it again - the last thing Dolphin's ownership and stadium management wants is another stadium, another place for someone (down the line) to play professional football in this market. And I can promise you this, any baseball stadium constructed with be laid out so to fit a football field in it.

 

Regardless of stadium mangements' mantra that they want the Marlins out, the cash flow and profits from the Marlins is a significant factor in running that facility. If they lose that and then start losing season ticket revenue because a) the Marlins and b) another pro footbal team are eating into their sales, the chronically underachieving Dolphins could be in real trouble.

 

The ripple effect of this throughout the media could be devastating. That QAM would continue to bash the Marlins and set up straw man arguments (signing Pudge 5 yrs $50 mil is the ONLY way to prove to the fans of South Florida that ownership is for real, keeping Luis Castillo the same) goes to show how ingrained the Dolphins are and how much power they wield.

 

What this season was about was the emancipation of Marlins fans from under the yoke of the media. Tens of thousands of fans stood up and told the media to go to h*ll. It was great. Now the media has to attempt to take back control, its the natural course of things.

 

Hopefully this year the fans wont be swayed. The lesson of 2003 was that "names" don't matter, play does. Who would have thought if you listened to the media that the Pierre/Wilson CF trade would have helped bring us a World Series? Losing Lee, Encarnacion, Castillo, Uggie and even Pudge won't matter if we replace them with high caliber guys who want a taste of victory and can walk the walk.

You have to believe, like the AFL and the WFL, that at some point, some group of newly fabulously rich sports-minded, egocentric entrepreneurs will start a new professional football league. It happens every 15-20 years like clockwork.

c'mon, every one of them has sunk like a stone. I think the WFL only survives through its NFL affiliation...

Pardon me, I misspoke, I should have said the USFL not the WFL, my error. The XFL was destined to fail but I believe my prophecy will play itself out in the next decade. You know the old saying "history repeats itself".

The AFL succeeded. The USFL was destroyed by the NFL and then won in court, only to be undone by a jury which thought it was the judge's (and not their) job to calculate the monetary damages.

BTW, I don't want to make more out of my "football" prophecy than it deserves. My point really is, in a grander sense, that an additional venue in this market is not in the best interests of the Dolphins ownership and PPS stadium management. Once the stadium is built, it will compete with PPS for all sorts of shows, events, etc., especially during baseball's off season. Rock concerts, all kinds of events may find the Marlins' stadium a more advantageous place to perform. And that means a revenue loss for you know who.
