April 16, 200917 yr 15 minutes until the Feud! KG's injury, Madden's retirement, NBA MVP votes, some Marlins love, Michigan's desperation, more Hockey talk... That is from the Around The Horn Twitter account, posted just a couple minutes ago.
April 16, 200917 yr Author Question was which team is the biggest surprise Woody Paige said Marlins Jay Mariotti said Padres Kevin Blackistone said Orioles Jackie MacMullen said Orioles Then Reali asked quickly who has the most staying power and MacMullen said Marlins but Woody disagreed.
April 16, 200917 yr Author Woody was joking about Uggla and Ramirez, he mispronounced them on purpose.

April 16, 200917 yr What a fool. And does he think that the Padres, Mariners, Orioles, or Royals have more staying power than the Marlins? Puhlease. The Blue Jays have the only team which might be decent over 162 games, barring any shocking developments. I guess the Royals aren't bad, but Marlins >>>>>> Royals
April 16, 200917 yr OMFG. Woody just quoted a statistic for the NBA MVP debate that he called "points + rebounds + assists". What a joke! What about steals, ftr. But even still: you can't just add together numbers to make a [meaningless] stats which fits your purposes. Those stats have such variable values.

Likewise with the Royals and the AL Central... Trey - fair point, but the Padres just do not appear to have anything resembling a strong squad or even one that can come close to .500. And someone will finish .500 in that division (probably the Dodgers). WC - I have to disagree. The White Sox, Tigers, and Indians are all potentially strong teams. On paper, that is one of the better divisions in baseball.

The Padres lineup looks like an AAA lineup...aside from a couple of players. They have Peavy & Young in the staff, and a solid closer in Heath Bell, but I just don't see them keeping it up. The Dodgers and D-Backs (when Webb comes back) have solid teams.

I know the Royals are high, but I still would take the ChiSox, Tigers, Twins, and even the slow start Indians over them.
April 16, 200917 yr Woody is a retard. he's funny but he's just stupid for saying that the marlins don't have staying power. Oh, and by the way. i'm tiring of this paulus talk. who cares if he might go to michigan to play football. he sucked at basketball so i doubt he'll do any better at playing football.

I thought of it after and couldn't decide whether or not to edit my post. Now that you've called me out, though, I must admit that you are right. Even if the Royal finish around .500, they could still be 5th in that division; and, on paper they are likely the least talented team in that division, even if you think they've improved.
April 17, 200917 yr Go Marlins in 09. F the Mets. F the Phillies. I hope your team sticks around and shut em both down. Good luck fellas.

April 17, 200917 yr I haven't watched ATH yet but it is nice to see them at least talking about us. Although Paige pretty much shat on us last year, along with Bill Plashke (who was still making cracks about Uggla in the ASG about a month ago).
April 17, 200917 yr Once again, who cares what they say about us one way or the other. BUT... We are getting much more national attention. Alot of that has to do with our record, but some has to do with the MLBN as well. They jumped on the wagon and ESPN dosen't want to be left behind, just in case. Lose a couple games in a row, and both will have the ship sinking. But that wouldn't happen around here.
April 17, 200917 yr After watching the segment, the thing that was so stupid about it was the fact that our name was brought up with all those other teams as a SURPRISE team..... WTF. Look at the records of those other teams last year (aside from Toronto), and look at ours, how do we belong in the same conversation? We are only a surprise to ignorant, front-running sportswriters.

Well, the 8-1 start is still a surprise. But your point is well-taken. They are dumb.
