Posted May 2, 200916 yr Cubs defeat the Marlins 6-1. Sanchez: 4 IP, 9 H, 6 ER, 4 BB, 5 SO HR: Ross (4)
May 2, 200916 yr A split would be fine. Lets go fish. A win tomorrow would put us at 4-3 on the trip i believe.
May 2, 200916 yr Split on the road, win 10 more games than you lose at home = playoffs. I would have easily taken a 14-10 record to start the year. We have a lot of problems though, with Nolasco, Anibal, and Miller/Taylor, our 6th and 7th RP (although Penn looked great today. so Frustrating), underachieving Hermida, Uggla, and Ross, two below average regulars that are not really underachieving (EB and Maybin), and two vortex of outs on the bench with Carroll and Helms. Hopefully Nolasco gets back on track, Miller/Anibal can throw a 4.50 era here on out, Proctor, Penn, and minor league depth fix the bullpen with time, our other five bats all raise their OPS, and Gaby comes up in June to help out the bench/platoon starting at 1B/3B. I'm cautiously optimistic.

May 2, 200916 yr 8 losses in a row with Hanley in the line-up. I really hope its a coincidence. :huh Nope. Hanley's lack of heart is obviously sinking this team.

May 2, 200916 yr I too am worried about our starting pitching re: Ricky, Anibal, and the 5th spot. Taylor was okay yesterday, but Ricky and Ani seem to have trouble getting into an initial groove. Get 'em tomorrow.
May 3, 200916 yr I too am worried about our starting pitching re: Ricky, Anibal, and the 5th spot. Taylor was okay yesterday, but Ricky and Ani seem to have trouble getting into an initial groove. Get 'em tomorrow. Why is everyone all over Anibal all of a sudden? Sure, his last two starts haven't been great at all but as I said earlier today, in his first three starts, he averaged 6 innings, only gave up 5 runs total, and struck out more than he walked. So he's been more good than bad. He's our fourth starter. If you're expecting JJ-esque numbers from him after he underwent labrum surgery, you're going to be disappointed.

I am not expecting JJ-esque numbers. But in his last three games he has given up at least one run in the first inning. Yes, he only gave up 3 runs to Pitt and he settled down, but that still is is three straight games he couldn't get out of the first without giving up a run. That's what I meant by initial groove. That fact that he pitches well after the first inning is encouraging. And that raises expectations. But, I, personally, perhaps unrealistically, don't want our homegrown pitching talent to pitch as their spot dictates. Sanchez is coming back from major surgery, so I am not going to suggest (and I am not even thinking of) demoting him or trading him. I just want to see him improve. And the last three starts, he hasn't. Especially in the first inning.
May 3, 200916 yr A guy having more strike outs than walks is not an accomplishment, nowhere close to an accomplishment, it's basically a written law to a MLB pitcher to have more strike outs than walks. A 2+ KK/BB is where an average pitcher sits. He was at 1.63 those first 3 games. He's now at 1.57. I'm not writing him off, but he has a 4.63 BB/9 since coming back from surgery. It's 80 inn of sample size, no problem of giving him the year to see if he can get everything back, but he hasn't shown too much since coming back. The only plus I can think of is his K rate, which is good to see.
May 3, 200916 yr Our ptichers giving up runs in the first also probalbly makes the offense press a little.

I highly doubt he's going to be what he once could've been which is why he's our fourth starter right now instead of a 1-2 guy (thank you, front office for refusing to perform precautionary MRIs) but I think he could post a sub 4.5 ERA this year and thats not bad at all for a back of the roty guy.
May 3, 200916 yr I was referring to this season only when I said the thing about strikeouts and walks. So was I. He's worse than he was last year. I agree I don't believe he won't continue being this poor, saying he could put up #3-#4 numbers isn't lofty at all, it basically all holds down to his control. My point was just that he hasn't shown anything promising this year, or since coming back from surgery.
