Posted June 7, 200915 yr So Gaby Sanchez is officially back in the AAA New Orleans lineup. Tonight he was 1/2 with 2BB, 1R, and 1RBI. Not bad for it being his first game back. I'm very excited to see what he does back in the lineup and hopefully he will do well enough for the Marlins to call him up to start at 3rd base and either bench Bonifacio or send him down to Nola. Either way, whether you're a fan of Bonifacio or not, he shouldn't be a starter in baseball right now. Maybe...maybe sometime in the future, but not now. Should Chris Coghlan? Maybe...maybe not, but Bonifacio is an no-brainer for me.
June 10, 200915 yr Earlier this season, Gaby was played at 3rd in Z's. but it's only couple of games he started at 3rd. As a 3B Gaby's fielding % has been awful, .914 through 111 games in minor, you know. So I think FO trying to test as a 3rd baseman with Boni's struggling, after Sanchez came back from injury. But it's not best option, I think. It's just a option of many things.
June 10, 200915 yr Was he usually a 1st baseman? He's played both, but has been notably better as a 1B
June 10, 200915 yr Was he usually a 1st baseman? He's played both, but has been notably better as a 1B I put it this way... He is an above average 1st baseman and a below average 3rd baseman. Its been like that since his college days and i doubt it will change now but if you call him up you really don't want Cantu at 3rd either so this is a tough choice.
June 10, 200915 yr Call him up and do a platoon. But he's a worse fielder then Bonifacio in about 30 less games at 3rd

His defense was considered pretty terrible at 1st for the longest time too, before 2008. Must of done alot of fielding drills because he most certainly improved over there.
June 10, 200915 yr Call him up and do a platoon. But he's a worse fielder then Bonifacio in about 30 less games at 3rd Not with Bonifacio. Bonifacio has to be sent down when Sanchez is called up otherwise I'm gonna kill someone.

Gaby Sanchez at 3rd; Will Marlins trade Dan Uggla? by Joe Capozzi Check out the box scores over the last two days for the Class AAA New Orleans Zephyrs ? Gaby Sanchez, batting .337, has started the last games at third base. Sanchez was the Marlins? first baseman in spring training when he lost the job in the final weeks of camp. Is he on his way to returning to the Marlins at a new spot? The interesting part is the defensive play of 3B Emilio Bonifacio, who has made more errors (11) than any third baseman in baseball. Is Bonifacio on his way to the minors? Or how about this thought ? maybe the Marlins plan to move him to his natural position? second base, the position he played before the Marlins started their experiment of converting him in spring training into a third baseman. Or? second baseman Dan Uggla?s Marlins days are numbered. The San Francisco Giants have expressed a strong interest both in Uggla and first baseman Jorge Cantu. This is all just me speculating, based on the two most recent box scores out of New Orleans?
June 10, 200915 yr Well, at least we know Capozzi doesn't follow the minors since Gaby had been playing 3b in AAA a lot before getting injured.

June 11, 200915 yr Even if Gaby is half of what I expect him to be (which isn't much, I expect him to play like a rookie), he will be an improvement over Boner.
June 11, 200915 yr Even if Gaby is half of what I expect him to be (which isn't much, I expect him to play like a rookie), he will be an improvement over Boner. Yea... Hopefully. He should be way better offensively but still meh on defense.
June 11, 200915 yr Well, at least we know Capozzi doesn't follow the minors since Gaby had been playing 3b in AAA a lot before getting injured. Sanchez had play 3 games at 3B prior to going on the DL and made one error now his played 5 games and 21 games at 1B with no error
June 11, 200915 yr I really think that Coghlan has always been the guy who was supposed to replace Uggla at 2B and I sure hope that hasn't changed. As far as longterm plans, while things rarely work out the way you want them to, we should be thinking about Logan Morrison in LF and Coghlan at 2B. 3B is a real question mark (gulp ) as I don't think Cantu is gonna be around too much longer and I'd expect Gaby to replace him at 1B. Any way you look at it, if Morrison fills LF and Cantu is traded, that leaves a hole somewhere.

Yes Coghlan is the 2nd baseman of the future and Morrison has been practicing in the OF to give himself and the team more options on trades and depth etc. Our 3rd base situation in the future is planned to be Matt Dominguez, currently in Jupiter, who is great defensively but still needs work on his hitting. But he's only 20 so he has plenty of time to develop and is expected to be around in late 2010 and in the 2011 season.

It would be a better idea if Bonifacio didn't suck vs RHP and Gaby didn't suck vs LHP.
June 11, 200915 yr It would be a good idea if Bonifacio didn't suck vs RHP and Gaby didn't suck vs LHP. Vs RHP: Cantu at third and Sanchez at first Vs LHP: Bonifacio at third and Cantu at first That simple. Or we can just send down Bonifacio already and let Coghlan play third base.

We can't really do any platoons until Gaby shows he can hit MLB Pitching. Until then were gonna have to stick with what we've got

He can't hit his way out of a box right now and until he learns to do that then we should be keeping any major league spots warm for him. The baseball world is so filled with first round busts that to count on one without seeing some signs of life to back it up is just silly. Please note that I'm not declaring him a bust as much as I am a struggling prospect. But in talking about jobs for next year, knowing that we are probably gonna have studs like Jonhson, Volstad, West, etc. in the rotation it would be nice to think that we wouldn't end up with something like Bonifacio again at third for a year while we are waiting for a 3B prospect who isn't even on the horizon yet.
June 11, 200915 yr Dominguez has been very good since the late part of May. If he can continue, thats great. Spend a few months in Jupiter next year and then off to Jacksonville and we are set at 3B.
